Come back, Mr. President. With the fiscal cliff behind him, the president left Washington for the shimmering rainbows and golden beaches of Hawaii as the people left homeless by the Hurricane Sandy-ruined beaches of Rockaway, Midland Beach, Breezy Point, the Jersey Shore sit waiting for a moribund Congress to approve their $60 billion aid package. As the president hopped Air Force One, thousands of people of the storm he promised to help were still trapped on the edge of a fiscal cliff. Not much has apparently changed since four years ago, when I wrote here
Comments: Marie Antoinette said it first...Obama believes it.
I guess there was a handful of morons who believed Obama when he said he´d cut throuh the re tape to help hurricane victims. Now te balme is being shifted to congress because they don´t agree with the pork add ons. There´s tons of unspent money in every government account because the estra money wasn´t needed in the last budget the senate passed. But Obama could have shifted funds from other areas to get money to the disaster area.
Obama´s one of the main authors of the additional pork requests, once again pinning the republicans back against the wall. Boehner, for his part should have passed a bill that pertained to the hurricane only.In the meantime you have a fat assed loud mouth governor putting his states needs ahead of the national budget woes.
Peter King is just as bad calling for a boycott on donations to the GOP. Yeah, that will help us long term of being able to push back.Is there another party out there I don´t know about?
The politicians in NY and NJ need to prove to the American taxpayers that they need 60 billion dollars. This aid bill is not a clean bill. The Senate Dems loaded this bill up from 8 billion needed for 2013 to 60 billion for all kinds of goodies for special interests around the country. I am thankful someone has the sense to slow this down to look at the true cost the taxpayers should provide. I am tired of throwing money away under the guise of of "a crisis."
Get all the pork out of it then pass it. Now is always a good time for the GOP to stand up to the spending. A reminder it was Obama who first politicized disaster relief in Texas during the wildfires...
All the lavish spending on himself and his family by this POTUS, as listed in this article, is ignored by the Left. What´s worse, Obama & Co. are right in assuming that the low-information voter will never hear about these things and if they do, they think it´s about time one of theirs got reparations.
So, no matter how often Obama et al spend millions of our money on their sybaritic lifestyle, no one cares except those with a sense of honor. It´s useless to complain about it until we win the ideological war on Obama´s socialist agenda -- it´s part of his worldview that he and his family should live lives of rulers rather than governors.
What frightens me is that his followers are okay with this. Because they don´t pay taxes and because they get all that free stuff, the high taxation and regulation will never hit them, only us. So why shouldn´t they enjoy watching O & Co. having a blast on Whitey´s dime?
Good post 10, but I think it is time to stop assuming that those partying are not white, and those paying are ´whitey´. There is, of course, considerable correlation between race, O support and tax payer/entitlement status. A better, less "dog-whistley" way to couch the issue is the Ant and the Grasshopper. O´s supporters want to frolic all summer, but when winter comes, they turn to the hard-working Ant to share what he has laboriously piled up. Ants & Grasshoppers: America at the crossroads.
Though a previous poster pointed out this bill is bursting with pork, IMHO, no one is asking the pertinent question: Why is the federal government paying to rebuild private property?
A few years ago, a wind storm blew half the roof off our house (and many of our neighbors) .... should your tax dollars have paid for my repairs?
It is this mentality that has gotten us into the fiscal disaster we find ourselves. Whenever something goes astray, go, hat in hand, to the government to make it better. Unless that changes, we´ll never recover as a nation!
I´m with you #12. We had homes destroyed and damaged by tornados in our area which were rebuilt without any government aid. Throughout the U.S. homes burn down every day which are rebuilt without FEMA. I do not understand why one should get FEMA assistance for their personal residence just because the threshold of the how widespread the disaster has been met. If only one home is destryoed it is a disaster for that homeowner.
OK, I get that people are happy that the "crisis" is averted, but that´s just temporary, and when the debt ceiling issue comes up and Bernanke and Geithner screw that up again, along with the next "cliff" (in 2 months), our bond rating is going to go down again. Borrowing money (which we are doing at an insane and accelerating rate) is going to be more and more expensive, compounding the problem.
Nothing has been solved, in fact, in typical Dim/Won fashion, things have actually been made much, much worse.
Agree with #12 and 13! I paid flood insurance for 30 years due to living on the Texas gulf coast. I never filed a claim, but would not expect the Feds to cover my losses if I failed to pay for insurance. Responsible citizens carry insurance and take care of their own property.
I only gave money to help the animals at shelters, damaged homes, etc in NY and NJ. I also recall seeing during the Christmas season just past all these commercials by Red Cross on how they have helped so many people hurt by Sandy.
The massive floods on the Mississippi River in the 1930s - all the aid, repairs, etc was accomplished through private donations.
Romney would have been over there with a chain saw and a shovel, encouraging others to give of themselves. The Obama government thinks every problem needs to be handled with other people´s money.
When New Orleans and the east coast suffered from catastrophic storms, it was up to the government to take care of those who did nothing to take care of themselves. When Mississippi and Alabama flooded from Katrina, church groups mobilized to repair the damage and clean up the mess. The same thing with the Nashville flooding early in Obama´s term. You did not see constant streams of photos and video from those areas, precisely because they weren´t inhabited by lazy welfare recipients who would sit on a bridge until someone put them in a cab or a helicopter to take them to a FEMA trailer.

Silly people. We all know it was good for sound bites to get him re-elected. Coming from Katrinaville we all knew it wasn´t as simple as Obama and Christy made it sound. But it worked. Republicans in House owe Christy nothing. Tell him to go beg to Obama. And cut the pork out of the bill.
I am repeating 2 axioms: 1.The main character in the 1957 French movie Gates of Paris (Porte de Lilas) repeatedly says: “All people are bastards except for you and I.” (I would say, no exceptions). 2.In some Russian book there was half a joke: What is in abundance in the Universe? Hydrogen and human stupidity. Now, Bush in 6 years with both repubic chambers of Congress accomplished what, 10% of what obozo accomplished in 4 years with only 2 years of "friendly" Congress. How about them apples??? (continue in next post)
In continuation of #27: What I think is happening? obozo has mainstream media and money (banks and Wall Street)! And conservatives will constantly lose and be blamed for whatever is wrong with our country unless we will not get the conservative mainstream media up and running. Even ann coulter´s darling christie is blaming repubics and there is not one outlet to counter him except for blogs - which are read only by us over and over again. We need a newspapers on every corner with headlines that are not pro-obozo, and we need local tv news without praising this clown for his actions!
#19 I am lost about your reasoning that Romney should be out there helping. Why should he? Americans did not want him to help bring this country out of debt. So, they can go to the WH and scream as much as they want.
If you’re wondering why Virginia Republicans are willing to fight over the attorney general’s race, it’s because the post has become almost as important as the governorship. Not only could the outcome impact continuing legal issues surrounding the Affordable Care Act, it would likely impact the number of Republicans in the U.S. Congress. Right now, Virginia has eight Republicans and three Democrats in the U.S. House. Prior to the redistricting — which was controlled by a Republican General Assembly and signed by Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell — Republicans held just a six-to-five majority. (Note: A couple of those races actually switched
The White House’s newest staffer is John Podesta, the 64-year-old founder of the Center for American Progress (CAP), the head of President Obama’s 2008 transition team, a former chief of staff to President Clinton, and a former lobbyist and cofounder, with his brother Tony, of the Podesta Group. You know: an outsider. Podesta is joining the administration for one year as White House counselor specializing in energy policy. And despite the fact that he has done more than any other unelected official to shape the policies of cap-and-trade and green energy subsidies, and to employ and place the talent that has
When supporters of Barack Obama feel compelled to write articles hotly declaring that the president isn’t finished, as many have this week, you know one thing: The idea that he might be finished is very much on their minds. In one sense, the argument is entirely unnecessary. Of course Obama isn’t finished. He’s the president, for God’s sake. Even if his troubles persist and deepen, he still bestrides the narrow world like a Colossus. After all, George W. Bush was “finished” once Republicans lost control of the House and Senate in 2006, yet he managed to turn the Iraq War around with
As 2013 draws to a close, let’s take a look at a few of the year’s most powerful photos… #1 – Senator Ted Cruz’s daughters watch with delight as he speaks out against Obamacare for 21 hours straight. He pauses to read them Dr. Seuss’s “Green Eggs and Ham” just before their bedtime.(Snip for photo)#2 – Former President George W. Bush uses Instagram to show off his granddaughter, Mila, on Grandparents Day.(Snip for photo)#3 – Astronaut Karen Nyberg gets up close and personal with the International Space Station.
It’s the awe-inspiring pride of the United States – and it harbors a deadly power that could kill us all. Yellowstone National Park is pristine wilderness, full of scenic landscape and iconic hot-pools and geysers that attract tens of thousands of visitors every year. But it’s what lies beneath that has scientists scurrying. We’ve long known that Yellowstone is merely the skin on top of a supervolcano – a giant pool of magma sitting just under the Earth’s surface. Exactly how giant has been the subject of much speculation. Until now. A team from the University of Utah have told the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting
The wife of American pastor Saeed Abedini, a religious prisoner in Iran, said the U.S. government has abandoned her husband during a congressional hearing on Thursday. Naghmeh Abedini told the House Foreign Affairs Committee that she was dismayed after learning that her husband’s imprisonment was not raised during the recent nuclear negotiations between Iran, the United States, and other world powers. Saeed Abedini was detained last year for starting Christian house churches in Iran and was later sentenced to eight years in prison for “undermining the national security of Iran.”
‘Obamacare was sold on a trinity of lies.” That ornate phrase, more suitable for the Book of Revelations or perhaps the next installment of Game of Thrones, comes from my National Review colleague Rich Lowry. But I like it. Most people know the first deception in the triumvirate of deceit: “If you like your health insurance you can keep it, period.” The second leg in the tripod of deception was “If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor.” But the third plank in the triad of disinformation hasn’t gotten much attention: Obamacare will save you, me, and the country a
New York — The anchor who might beat Bill O’Reilly gets her eyelash extensions applied one at a time, with tweezers and dabs of glue, about 90 minutes before showtime, right after a motorized gun sprays foundation over her face, neck, shoulders, collarbone and sternum, wiping out a galaxy of light freckles that spreads across her — Let me stop you right there. Photos of the day Uruguay legalizes marijuana, Kiev police pull back from protesters, aging U.S. prison population and more. Tuesday´s Photos of the day Would you write this way about a man? About O’Reilly himself? At least that’s what Megyn Kelly might ask at
In August 2013 I became very sick with what I thought was a cold. After a few days I lost vision in my left eye and I checked into the hospital. I soon found out that what I thought was a summer cold was actually Strep bacteria poisoning my blood stream. The bacteria blinded my left eye, ate a hole through my heart, caused five strokes on both sides of my brain and forced the removal of my prosthetic left knee. Dr. Lee was the surgeon assigned to perform open heart surgery. What was originally scheduled to last four hours ended
The health director who approved the release of President Obama’s birth certificate has died in a plane crash, Hawaiian officials said Thursday. Loretta Fuddy died after the Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft she was travelling on went down shortly after leaving Kalaupapa Airport at around 3:15 p.m. local time (10:15 a.m. ET) on Wednesday. The other eight people on board were rescued, Richard Schuman, president of Makani Kai Air, told NBC News early Thursday, adding that that there was no indication as to why the plane had crashed. Fuddy hit the headlines two years ago when she approved a waiver request allowing Obama to
Fox News host Megyn Kelly has made herself the center of a racial controversy by declaring that Jesus Christ and Santa Claus are white. On Wednesday night, Kelly was responding to an article by Slate writer Aisha Harris, who wrote an article entitled “ Santa Claus Should Not Be a White Man Anymore .” The popular news host told viewers of “The Kelly File,” her hit FNC program, “When I saw this headline, I kinda laughed and I said, ‘Oh, this is ridiculous. Yet another person claiming it´s racist to have a white Santa.’ And by the way, for all you kids
Views of the tea party are at all-time lows in a new poll, as primary challenges to establishment Republicans continue to heat up Washington. Just 30 percent of Americans view the tea party favorably in a new Gallup poll released Wednesday, the movement’s lowest point since Gallup began polling about it during its rise in 2010. Also in a first, a majority of Americans had an unfavorable view of the tea party, at 51 percent. Similar numbers of respondents described themselves as proponents or opponents of the tea party: Twenty-two percent identified themselves as tea party supporters, while 24 percent said they
THE Internet has been abuzz over the spectacle of President Obama and the prime ministers of Britain and Denmark snapping a photo of themselves — a “selfie,” to use the mot du jour — with a smartphone at the memorial service for Nelson Mandela in South Africa on Tuesday. Leaving aside whether it was appropriate, the moment captured the democratization of image making that is a hallmark of our gadget-filled, technologically rich era. Manifestly undemocratic, in contrast, is the way Mr. Obama’s administration — in hypocritical defiance of the principles of openness and transparency he campaigned on — has systematically tried
If you go down on the ice today you´re sure of a big surprise - a rare glimpse of 20 polar bears gorging on a bloody midnight feast. These photographs show a rare cluster of males, females and cubs all dining out on the remains of a whale carcass. They spent a night and a day stripping every last morsel from the mammoth sea creature. Usually Polar bears are solitary and would never tolerate being so close to each other. But with food in plentiful supply and bellies dragging on the floor they seem too lethargic to fight.Wildlife photographer Michal
