| A small neglected Long Island airport, once used as a U.S. Naval base, is the new home of thousands of derelict cars damaged in Superstorm Sandy. About 15,000 storm-ravaged vehicles are parked bumper-to-bumper on runways and taxiways at the Calverton Executive Airport, which years ago was the site of a Grumman aircraft-manufacturing plant where the military assembled F-14 and tested lunar roving vehicles. Insurance Auto Auctions Corp. has agreed to pay the town of Riverhead, which owns the airport, $3,200 per month for every acre taken up by the cars.

Lot of them could be sold at the right price even if it´s known they´re flooders. If insurance has total loss these vehicles, they should take ownership of them and sell them at auctions or whatever.

My daughter, who is an adjustor, was out there on TDY to service some of those claims for her company. She told me that the cars were flooded by sea water, and that the electronics/wiring, etc., were completely shot. Also, corrosion issues from the sea water. All totaled.

Sorry, but it´s time to get nostalgic again. America was a better place when the Navy was flying newly-built F-14s off those runways and before nearby Griffiss Air Force Base was abandoned and left for the grunge generation to hold their Woodstock 99 riot festival.

I suppose the town of Riverhead will use this unexpected windfall to lower taxes for it´s citizens.

Most flood cars are worthless and should be crushed - that goes double for cars flooded with salt water.

Oh my goodness. A lot of my old time friends in Aerospace at one of the local companies came from Calverton and Riverhead as the place declined and they quit to move to California. They are all still here to be sure. Riverhead Betty is one of my dearest friends. Not seen for an age but not forgotten.
By the way, salt water immersion for a car is just completely bad news. Nobody wants one of those cars. Even flooded in fresh water is no good and just marginally more acceptable. A fresh water dunker could be trucked to Arizona to dry out for a couple of years I suppose.

Just like some people got stuck unawares buying a Katrina vehicle, be very aware now that Sandy vehicles may hit the used market.

Even as reports break about the size and scope of the National Security Agency’s vast data storage center in Utah, new details are emerging about a second massive NSA center in San Antonio, Texas. According to the Houston Chronicle, “Satellite and aerial imagery show that massive air conditioning units and backup generators have been added to the facility, which is now ringed by barbed-wire fencing. City permits and property tax records show that the complex has been dramatically expanded.” According to sources, the plant will supposedly translate intercepted communications from the NSA; the communications are then forwarded to Maryland

House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) subpoenaed documents from a controversial ObamaCare program on Friday after charging that the Obama administration had denied his request several times. Issa is seeking information on a federal attempt to boost nonprofit health plans, known as CO-OPs (consumer oriented and operated plans), which compete with traditional health insurance. The Affordable Care Act created a $3.4 billion federal loan program for CO-OPs that Republicans say might never be repaid because of some applicants´ financial troubles.

As NewsBusters reported last week, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin called out vulgarian comedian Bill Maher for referring to her Down Syndrome son Trig as "retarded." On ABC´s The View Monday, co-host Barbara Walters astonishingly defended Maher saying, "I don´t think he intended it to be mean-spirited" (video follows with transcript and commentary): WHOOPI GOLDBERG: At a recent standup show in Las Vegas, comedian Bill Maher apparently called Sarah Palin’s five-year-old developmentally-challenged son Trig retarded. And Sarah blasted him on Twitter as a bully. Is that, is it, is he a bully? Is he a bad, what is he?

U.S. Rep. Edward J. Markey, who has boasted in his U.S. Senate campaign about bringing high-tech jobs to Massachusetts, backed one of the biggest telecom busts in his own hometown, funneling $35 million in taxpayer dough to a 17-year project that’s failed to create a single Internet job.The planned Telecom City — re-named Rivers Edge after the site failed to become a dot com boomtown — was supposed to attract at least 7,500 high-tech jobs. The 200-acre site that straddles Malden, Medford and Everett instead has produced only 300 jobs so far, none of which are

In the latest black eye for the scandal-ridden State Department, a whistleblower claims she was run out of the foreign service after complaining about a consul general’s alleged office trysts with subordinates and hookers.Kerry Howard says she was bullied, harassed and forced to resign after she exposed US Consul General Donald Moore’s alleged security-threatening shenanigans in the Naples, Italy, office. As the post’s community-liaison officer, Howard was charged with keeping workplace peace and advising higher-ups on the state of morale, but when she revealed allegations about her boss, State Department officials swept it under the rug,

Five months into his second term, allies and enemies are as confounded as ever about who President Obama really is. Is he the dyed-in-the-wool liberal that his biggest supporters and critics suggest? Or is he a pragmatic, even cynical, politician who cares more for his popularity than taking risks for his ideological goals or living up to his rhetoric? Even in the short period since his reelection, Obama has provided evidence to support conflicting interpretations. His efforts to pass immigration reform, the unsuccessful push for stricter gun controls and tax hikes on high earners buttress the case for Obama-as-ideologue.

Jeb Bush says he’s not worried that his work toward comprehensive immigration reform and his ties to the GOP establishment will alienate conservatives and negatively impact a potential 2016 presidential campaign, referring to critics as “the chirpers.” “If I decide to run for office again, it will be based on what I believe, and it will be based on my record,” the former Florida governor said in an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network’s David Brody. “And that record was one of solving problems completely from a conservative prospective.” Bush (R) pointed to his conservative

Gang of Eight member Bob Menendez advised Republicans to accept legalization status for current illegal immigrants if they ever want to see another president from their party. “I would tell my Republican colleagues — both in the House and the Senate — that the road to the White House comes through a road with a pathway to legalization,” the New Jersey senator said on State of the Union this morning. “Without it, there’ll never be a road to the White House for the Republican party.” Menendez also warned of triggers on border security

Politico’s Playbook has an excerpt from a new Ryan Lizza piece from the New Yorker that is not yet online. It contains a passage on the back-and-forth between labor and the Chamber that has a quote from a Rubio staffer that is going to raise eyebrows, to say the least: “There are American workers who, for lack of a better term, can’t cut it. There shouldn’t be a presumption that every American worker is a star performer. There are people who just can’t get it, can’t do it, don’t want to do it. And so you can’t obviously discuss that publicly.” Here is the entire context:
