Great Britain does not have to give up its independence and freedoms to trade with the EU. GB produces goods and services, has money, traders will be at your door. GB should give the boot to the EU socialists.

#4, before the European Common Market (as was) came into being there were tariffs and other fees and expenses involved in imports and exports, including European countries. That´s mainly why Britons were persuaded to support entry into the EC. I was a little too young and naive to understand, all I knew was that my parents were thinking about imported goods being less expensive and exported goods making more money for the country.

The period when politicians began pushing the EC was not that long after the end of WWII. Still fairly strict rationing didn´t end until the mid-1950s or so--I remember my mother allowing me to hand a ration coupon to the sales clerk for a small bag of sugar (four ounces or so, perhaps?) in the early 1950s. The clearing of tens of thousands of bomb sites followed by reconstruction of factories, docks, city centers, rail stations, and the like, didn´t get into full swing until the "Swinging Sixties."

And so it came to pass for the battered, war-weary frog in the pot that the water was gradually heated until it was almost too hot to jump out and escape.
