800,000 civilian furloughs at
stake if spending cuts go
into effect, Pentagon says

On the edge of the so-called “fiscal cliff,” Pentagon officials said Monday they could have to order furloughs for up to 800,000 civilian employees if lawmakers failed to cancel pending spending reductions. The military’s service chiefs, who have already been making cuts as part of a separate, long-term effort to wean down the defense budget, are now working to assess the impact of the congressionally mandated cuts if the White House and lawmakers fail to strike a last-minute deal. If no such agreement is reached before the end of 2012, the sweeping fiscal retrenchment would begin Wednesday.

The problem is that those furloughed will be the ones that are needed. Just like the state governments tell you they´ll have to cut police, firefighters and teachers if you refuse to let them raise taxes. It´s extortion.

This wash post story was approved by nancy pelosi.

If it was even close to the truth, I would say its about time the govt. started cutting.

Naturally food stamps are safe, so the ghetto eats steaks and shrimp to celebrate the New Year.

The private sector can eat pizza.

unfortunately, this wont affect the government ´engineers´. this will affect the private industry engineering support staff. i fear that not only because it affects me, but because i know the 8 gov´t engineers whose jobs i currently do will not be able to handle it on their own.

who will it ultimately affect if i go? 130-150 highly trained submariners per hull. and the billion dollar subs they work in. and the billions in equipment and nuclear weapons and nuclear reactors installed in them.

i recently reviewed over 7,000 pages of engineering drawings for some major alterations to our in service subs. my recommendations for changes, and the errors i caught would have gone unnoticed by the gov´t guys. they dont read them. and mostly dont understand them.

in just one example, the planning yard designed hangars to hold high pressure hydraulic piping to the inside of the hull. their mistake was using dissimilar metals to construct the hangars. this design error would have caused corrosion resulting in the loss of support for the hydraulic lines, releasing them, and causing a catastrophic loss of control and ultimately the loss of the crews and ships.

i fear for the safety of our active duty should us ´support contractors´ be let go.

good. let the layoffs begin. there is no large organization in the world that cant cut 10%.

the rest of the bloated federal government needs to cut 10% out of their budgets also.

#9 is absolutely correct. All departments can easily cut at least 10%. With the way they budget, 20% would probably be the better number

In the fall of 2010, the nasty midterms drawing to a close, Michelle Obama was contemplating her next move. Two years into her tenure as first lady, the breathless fixation on guest lists and china selections was subsiding into routine, and she wanted a plan for the rest of her husband’s time in office. Of course, her calendar would never lack for National Hostess duties—the obligatory social functions outlined in binders left by Laura Bush’s team. She had already launched Let’s Move!, the childhood obesity initiative, and Joining Forces, a program to help military families and veterans, was also in

ALBANY — New York, whose status as the most populous state has long been ceded, will soon fall behind Florida into fourth place, a long-anticipated drop that is rife with symbolism and that could carry potentially serious economic consequences in coming years. When the Census Bureau releases its latest population estimates on Monday, demographers expect that Florida and New York will be narrowly separated — perhaps by as little as a few thousand people — and that if Florida does not pass New York this time, it almost certainly will do so in 2014. The census figures underscore immigration trends, as foreign-born migrants continue to

Details of the clandestine relationship were made public during the second day of their trial, where they are accused of overseeing a decade of illegal activity at The Sun and The News

The Oscar-winning film director Charles Ferguson has cancelled his CNN documentary on Hillary Clinton after what he described as a private campaign against the film by prominent Democrats. Ferguson said he had decided to pull the plug after being met with a wall of silence from more than a hundred people who refused to be interviewed for the documentary. He claimed that aides to the former secretary of state put pressure on CNN behind the scenes, and made clear that Clinton would only co-operate "over my dead body". He also blamed a public campaign by Republicans, who claimed the film would be

When Ted Sarandos put out the word that Netflix would begin producing original shows, he was swamped with story pitches that everyone else in Hollywood clearly had taken a pass on — including some scripts marked with coffee stains, smudged fingerprints and other telltale signs of rejection. That all changed in 2011 after Netflix bought the political thriller "House of Cards" from "The Social Network" and "Fight Club" director David Fincher.

It’s a Duck Nation, and we’re all just living in it. Last week, A&E Network’s reality show “Duck Dynasty” catapulted to become the biggest unscripted show in cable history with its fourth season premiere. With nearly 11.8 million viewers, the show about a Louisiana family that has made millions from its duck call fabrication business is on the brink of toppling “The Walking Dead.” If it does, it will become cable´s biggest show. The A&E Network, as Duck Commander patriarch Phil Robertson would say, is “Happy, happy, happy.” The show premiered in March 2012 and finished its first cycle with an average

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Democrat Anthony Weiner said that the new sexting firestorm that set his City Hall campaign reeling last week will in the end make him a stronger mayor and better able to deliver for Staten Island and the rest of the city. "I´m going to be a successful mayor because of it, because it´s going to give me a level of independence," he told the Advance in an exclusive interview. "I´m not constructing a campaign around the approval of my peers. I´m constructing a campaign around the aspirations of my neighbors."

After presenting at the Academy Awards this year, Kim Novak didn’t want to leave her house. The Hitchcock screen siren, 81, was too humiliated to venture from her home near the Rogue River in Oregon. She read the cruel posts and Internet snark about her appearance, and it was just too much. “It got to me like it gets kids and teenagers,” she told the Associated Press. The “Vertigo” actress, considered one of the great beauties in her day, posted a note on her Facebook wall Thursday, acknowledging that she’d gotten fat injections in her face and addressing her halted

President Obama addressed the White House press corps today, announcing that with the final numbers in, Obamacare´s exchanges have attracted eight million sign-ups -- 35 percent of whom are "under the age of 35," he said. Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. As recently as last month, the share of "young invincibles" signing up for plans was struggling in the 25 percent range, far short of the actuarial target of nearly 40 percent. A leap into the mid-30´s, while still shy of the goal, would constitute a major step, and would bode well for the risk pools'

It’s the stuff of Westerns: a showdown on the desert plains, the big bad government against an underdog farmer. Though the story has only grabbed national headlines in the past several days, rancher Cliven Bundy has illegally grazed cattle on the Nevada land surrounding his farm for over 20 years. He hasn’t paid grazing fees since 1993, and refuses to renew the necessary grazing permit.(Snip)Rather than using the avenues and pathways presented to him, Bundy has staunchly declared his own law and allegiances. Unfortunately, reality doesn’t work this way. If only it did—we could rebel for paying stupid taxes, refuse to

A group of seven multiracial Washington and Lee University (W&L) students are demanding the school remove all Confederate flags from campus and "acknowledge" General Robert E. Lee´s "dishonorable side." According to the Roanoke Times, "seven multiracial students, calling themselves ´The Committee,´" have also demanded the school "acknowledge and apologize for participating in chattel slavery." They want recognition of "Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the undergraduate campus" and an end to "neo-Confederates" marching across campus "to the Lee Chapel on Lee-Jackson Day." The students say they will "engage in civil disobedience" if their demands are not met by September 1st. They added: "The

To "honor the dignity and work of immigrants," Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi helps Bishop Marc Andrus wash the feet of two children Thursday at Saint John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in San Francisco. Pelosi also used the occasion to talk about passing HR15 - bipartisan immigration legislation that her office says would "reduce the deficit by nearly $1 trillion, secure our borders, unite our families, protect our workers and provide an earned pathway to citizenship." The Democratic leader´s ceremony coincides with Pope Francis´ similar ceremony in Rome to mark Holy Week.

Imagine a vendor on the National Mall, selling burgers and dogs, who hasn’t paid his rent in 20 years. He refuses to recognize his landlord, the National Park Service, as a legitimate authority. Every court has ruled against him, and fines have piled up. What’s more, the effluents from his food cart are having a detrimental effect on the spring grass in the capital. Would an armed posse come to his defense, aiming their guns at the park police? Would the lawbreaker get prime airtime on Fox News, breathless updates in the Drudge Report, a sympathetic ear from Tea Party Republicans?

First, the good news: We are close enough to the end of the Obama presidency for his crowd to talk about a presidential library. Now, the bad news: Obama´s retirement is still 1,008 days distant. Plenty of time though to round up the dough to build it somewhere. Figure they need Solyndra-style money, at least $500 million. The last two presidents – Bill Clinton and George W. Bush -- built their legacy edifices totally with private money. [Snip] However, Obama supporters have a different take. They think taxpayers should put up $100 million in public money for Obama´s library.
