| Washington – A Democratic source familiar with the talks tells CNN they have hit a “major setback” because Republicans are now insisting that any fiscal cliff deal include “chained CPI," which Democrats consider a “poison pill.” The Democratic source says they understand the president offered this in talks with House Speaker John Boehner, but Democrats say that was in the context of a larger deal - in exchange for changes to the way the debt ceiling is approached - which is not in the plan anymore.

I have to assume this means tying all money/taxes etc. to CPI increases...otherwise we pay higher and higher taxes on the same money with more zero´s caused by inflation.

Chained CPI is an attempt to reduce the official cost of living increase by assuming recipients of Social Security and military pensions merely substitute cheaper or generic goods for pricier or name brand as prices rise. Apparently, this can be done over and over...or something.

Latest is that the GOP (as stated by McCain) is backing off the chained CPI issue. So this article is no longer relevant.
My prediction is that any spending reduction decisions will be dealt with during the debt limit debates. So the automatic spending cuts may be ignored for now and dealt with as part of the debt package.
With all this talk of raising taxes on the wealthier, I rarely see mention of what is happening to dividend and Cap gains rates. Under the Cliff divs are treated as ordinary income and LT cap gains are maxed at 20%. Divs also get a 3.4% increase to pay for Obamacare - for a total of 43.8% Federal tax. Which is why so many companies - like Obama´s Costco - actually borrowed money to pay special dividends this year.

Much has been written and said about the astoundingly tone deaf performance of White House spokesman Jay Carney during this past month of scandals. The former journalist has lost the confidence of the people who were once his colleagues due to his unwillingness to tell the truth about his own deceptive statements (never mind those he represents in front of the press) about the Benghazi talking points or even to acknowledge that he has changed his story. The same applies to the shifting story he has told about the Internal Revenue Service scandal

The 2012 election season was filled with angry cries of “voter suppression,” almost all of them regarding attempts by states to require voter ID and otherwise improve ballot integrity. Bill Clinton warned that “there has never been — in my lifetime, since we got rid of the poll tax and all the other Jim Crow burdens on voting — the determined effort to limit the franchise that we see today.” Democratic-party chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said “photo-ID laws, we think, are very similar to a poll tax.” All of this proved to be twaddle.

One of two men allegedly being questioned in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings was shot and killed by an FBI agent in Florida on Tuesday, (Snip)A friend of Ibragim Todashev said he and Todashev were being investigated as part of the Boston bombings. He said Todashev, 27, knew bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev because both were MMA fighters. The man claims he and Todashev were interviewed by the FBI for nearly three hours on Tuesday. The friend said he left the interview, and when he came back to the apartment he found that there had been a shooting.

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said embattled IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights and will be hauled back to appear before his panel again. The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”
