Senate-passed $60.4 billion Sandy aid
package heads to tight-fisted House

The $60.4 billion emergency-aid package for Hurricane Sandy victims that the Senate has passed now faces an uncertain, final vote in the Republican-controlled House, which has expressed a desire to pass a less-expensive bill in the final days of the lame duck session. The measure passed the Democrat-controlled Senate on Friday by a 62-32 vote, after Republicans failed to pass amendments that would have cut the package to $24 billion. The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that only about $9 billion of the $60.4 billion would be spent over the next nine months.

It´s pure insanity that a bill like this would pass despite everybody knowing we face a debt/deficit problem. The fact that a remarkably low amount of the money going to actual hurricane damage, makes it even worse.I guess these bozos figure that no matter how reckless spending is,that it helps the economy. Why does Alaska need $200 million for fisheries? Last time I checked,Alaska had pretty much figured out how to fish.

Once again, house republicans will be demonized for trying to reel all this wasteful pork in.

If this money was spent right,it could be a boon to Ny and NJ´s economies but of course we know it won´t be spent right, especially if a large chunk of it is going to shadowy Obama cronies and union bosses.

I realize there is a lot of damage from this storm and many lost there homes and businesses, but shouldn´t much of this be covered but insurance. Why am I, living 30 miles inland and at 400 ft, paying to restore ocean front property? Many of these same folks, at least here in Conn., don´t want me to walk on their beach either.

Liveshot Schumer´s payback.

If "only" $9 billion will be spent in the next nine months, then that is all the money that should be in the bill.

Gee, I didn´t know there were 62 demonrats in the Senate. Proving once again that some "republicans" are just as bad as the demonrats are when it comes to spending OUR money. BTW, where are the names of "republicans" who went along with this outrageous vote. They should be proud..NOT..

People with property should pay the premiums for insurance. They have property, so have the money, but choose not to. That´s fine, but then don´t slough off the losses on taxpayers, who collected no insurance premiums. If taxpayers are going to be insurers, then there need to be premiums, or tough luck. I am not aware of any $60 billion dollar aid packages for conservative hurricanes, just the liberal hurricanes -- Sandy and Katrina.

Fox has clearly gone over to the dark side.

It´s going to be up to us to speak up and speak out.

Write letters to your local newspapers, call the local talk shows. Perhaps there is still hope for some sanity.

´Tight-fisted´.....for shame.

All spending bills must originate in the House.

This is, to my understanding, unconstitutional.

Don´t you just love how the "fair and balanced" "news" station headlines this? Sometimes I have fox news on in the background while I´m doing something. I have to check sometimes to make sure I´m not on msnbc....nowadays they frequently sound the same.

I object to the posts indicating this report is somehow critical of the House Republicans. I suspect those House members would take pride in being called "tightfisted", and if you read the article, the writer seems to agree that it´s a good thing. I suspect some of us are way too thin-skinned these days. In this case, "tight-fisted" is a compliment.

4 - I had to laugh. All I could picture was a cross-eyed Mel Brooks in Blazing Saddles.

The majority of the package is PORK, nothing to do with Sandy Relief. And YES, all spending bills Constitutionally must be initiated by the House. (but that doesn´t matter in the current administration - Harry Reid gutted a House bill and inserted the Obamacare debacle, then passed it with NO Republican votes - and Roberts called it a Tax)

I agree that the spending bills must come from Congress....not originate in the Senate. Also, Chucky Schumer wants this pass ASAP....he would with all the pork. I recommend a Senator or Congressman´s name must be attached to each line item in the budget. This way we the taxpayers can see who is putting in the pork and call them out!!!!!!

As usual, Congress can`t help its addiction to our money. This is an appropriations bill more than a hurricane relief package. Expect whatever dollar amount finally settled upon to be completely wasted and the Sandy victims left unaided.

Our National Debt Clock just sped up a little.

Reply 19 - Posted by: oh-heck, 12/30/2012 1:40:07 PM     (No. 9090211)

This bill alone is a year and a half of increased taxes on the rich. This will be going to states that weren´t prepared and the NY transit system that wasn´t smart enough to move their engines and cars to high ground before the hurricane hit. This isn´t government money it is taxpayer money they are giving away.

And as #10 said: Money bills MUST originate in the House of Representatives!

I didn´t realize Sandy hit Samoa. 58 million for planting trees on private property? It´s unreal. The political class we have is for the most part totally unserious. I trust the House will remain tight-fisted, somebody has to.

Both parties constantly make accusations that their rival is engaged in hypocritical, unethical, or illegal behavior. Given the drastic lack of ideological diversity in the American elite media, the general public usually only hears about such accusations against Republicans. Beyond the fact that biased reporting shapes public opinion to favor the left, it may also have an effect on law enforcement. The persistent lies that have been told about right-leaning political groups by leading Democrats, including President Obama himself, may have led to the IRS abuses of power that we’ve heard so much about in recent weeks.

A former USC professor was named Monday to the FBI´s Ten Most Wanted fugitives list after he was indicted for sex crimes against children abroad, FBI officials said. Walter Lee Williams, 64, became the 500th person named to the list, officials said. He faces charges of sexual exploitation of children, traveling with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct and engaging in illicit sexual conduct in foreign places. Bureau officials said they had identified at least 10 alleged victims between the ages of 9 and 17. Many live in Third World countries, officials said, adding that Williams has traveled extensively

Writing today in the Corner at National Review Online, Jonah Goldberg takes up the point I discussed earlier today about the necessity for Republicans not to frame the immigration reform issue as one in which their principal motivation is to avoid allowing more Hispanics become Democratic voters. He agrees with me that’s wrong, but he also says that supporters of the gang of eight bill are mistaken to try and sell their legislation to the GOP on the grounds that it is good politics. He thinks the debate on the bill should rise and fall on its merits,

Left Loses Big in Citizenship-Verification
Supreme Court Case

Something perverse happened after the Supreme Court’s decision today invalidating citizenship-verification requirements in Arizona for registrants who use the federal voter registration form. The Left knows they lost most of the battle, but are still claiming victory. That’s what they do. Election-integrity proponents and the states are saying they lost, but don’t realize they really won. The Left wins even when they lose, and conservatives are often bewildered and outfoxed in the election-process game. Earlier today, I called the decision a nothingburger. After re-reading the case and reflecting a bit more, it’s clear that the decision was a disaster

DETROIT -- In one of the biggest-ever showdowns between an automaker and the government, Chrysler on Tuesday is expected to file papers explaining its refusal to recall 2.7 million older Jeep SUVs that are at risk of catching fire in rear-end collisions. The government says 51 people have suffered fiery deaths in Jeep Grand Cherokees and Libertys with gas tanks mounted behind the rear axles. But Chrysler is expected to stick to its contention that the SUVs are as safe as similar vehicles on the road. The Jeeps, it says, met all federal safety standards when they were built,

According to Sarah Palin, the GOP’s vice presidential candidate in 2008, the United States is “becoming a totalitarian surveillance state.” And Herman Cain, who ran as a GOP presidential candidate in 2012, said, “This train is running full speed down the tracks towards socialism and towards communism. Yes, I said it. Before we stop it and reverse it, we got to slow it down. That’s what we do in 2014.” Now, we actually know what genuine totalitarian surveillance states and communist nations look like, and America is nothing close to becoming anything like them. Amid a steady rise of backlash, Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old former National Security Agency contractor who was the source of a spring of leaks about the agency´s surveillance methods, conducted a live chat on The Guardian´s website Monday morning. Judging from some of the pointed questions he´s been asked and the reaction to newly leaked revelations over the past few days, it´s clear that much of the sympathy and support Snowden had built up for his early exposures is eroding. Many Americans supported his decision to leak information about a pair of National Security Agency surveillance programs, which, he detailed, gathered information

On ABC´s The View Monday, co-host Barbara Walters astonishingly defended Maher saying, "I don´t think he intended it to be mean-spirited" (video follows with transcript and commentary): WHOOPI GOLDBERG: At a recent standup show in Las Vegas, comedian Bill Maher apparently called Sarah Palin’s five-year-old developmentally-challenged son Trig retarded. Five months into his second term, allies and enemies are as confounded as ever about who President Obama really is. Is he the dyed-in-the-wool liberal that his biggest supporters and critics suggest? Or is he a pragmatic, even cynical, politician who cares more for his popularity than taking risks for his ideological goals or living up to his rhetoric? Even in the short period since his reelection, Obama has provided evidence to support conflicting interpretations. His efforts to pass immigration reform, the unsuccessful push for stricter gun controls and tax hikes on high earners buttress the case for Obama-as-ideologue.

During his interview with ABC’s Jonathan Karl this morning, Rubio didn’t even seem to understand what that meant. “Are you being played by the Democrats?” asked Karl. “Is Chuck Schumer playing you?” “I don’t — I quite frankly, I don’t even know what that means,” Rubio replied. “Is he using you?” Karl continued. “Is he using you to try to accomplish something that the Democrats want and is not — not a conservative bill?” Rubio responded that immigration reform was a bi-partisan issue that “all Americans

Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.

Marco Rubio. Paul Ryan. The IRS. Illegal immigration. And fraud to the tune of billions.. Now there’s a combustible mix. Let’s start with the IRS, illegal immigration and fraud. We’ll come back in a minute to Senator Rubio and Congressman Ryan. For those who came in late, a year before the IRS scandals burst onto the scene in early May of 2013, an alert investigative reporter for WTHR-Indianapolis (Channel 13), Bob Segall by name, produced a stunning piece of journalism. Segall’s video report is found here and we will quote from his story for the basics.
