| It was a cruel, cruel year — a year that kept raising our hopes, only to squash them flatter than a dead possum on the interstate. Example: This year the “reality” show Jersey Shore, which for six hideous seasons has been a compelling argument in favor of a major earth-asteroid collision, finally got canceled, and we dared to wonder if maybe, just maybe, we, as a society, were becoming slightly less stupid. But then, WHAP, we were slapped in our national face by the cold hard frozen mackerel of reality in the form of the hugely popular

Comments: Haven´t read the whole piece yet myself, but Barry generally put a smile on my face every year about this time..

I like Dave-- Barry much-- but it´s getting harder to create humor from the tragedy that is Obama and his many cohorts.
Nice try Dave.

Loved Dave´s line: "In Europe, the economic crisis continues to worsen as the government of Greece, desperate for revenue, is forced to lease the Parthenon to Hooters." Hope there is a 2014.

Barry is the only author since Betty MacDonald that can make me laugh out loud while reading. I wonder if this is a new book - would love to have a copy.

The Higgs boson and Mayor Bloomberg get the worst of it in this very funny review. Were it not for political correctness, to which even Dave Barry must adhere, I believe more would have been written about Hilary and O.

Thanks very much, Dave! You are a national treasure and have kept me and several million others laughing to keep from crying for decades now.
I wish the cold frozen mackerel of reality could hit some of our national ´leadership´...

Hilarious! Can´t decide on a favorite line, but one would certainly be: "In science news, physicists announce that they think they might have discovered a totally new tiny invisible particle, named the ´Weems foomple,´ which, the scientists say, could be even more important than the Higgs boson, although to be absolutely certain that it truly exists they say they are going to need, quote, ´billions more research dollars,´ as well as ´a large boat.´

Far and away the clearest summary of the Benghazi affair:
Abroad, the big story is a deadly 9/11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. It soon becomes apparent that the attack either was or was not a spontaneous protest to a movie that either does or does not actually exist, or possibly it was an organized terrorist attack that either did or did not involve al Qaeda and either could or could not have been prevented if there had been better intelligence, which maybe there was, or maybe there was not, although if there was, it was not acted on, possibly for political reasons. Or, not. But beyond these basic facts, little is clear. The White House issues a strong statement assuring the nation that President Obama was not in any way involved in this, "or anything else that may or may not become known."

The president may have forgotten something as he boarded Marine One this morning. On his way to the U.S. Naval Academy graduation ceremony on Annapolis, Md., President Obama didn’t return the salute of the marine standing guard at the door of Marine One, as he climbed the steps to the helicopter cabin. Obama soon ducked his head out, waved to the pilot, and jaunted back down the stairs to address the marine, shaking his hand. In the short video clip, one can’t hear the two men talking, so it’s unclear what exactly was said.

Put aside the politics, and the question of who-knew-what-when. There are two policy problems highlighted by the controversies at the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Justice. The first is the growth of 501(c)(4) groups into vehicles for anonymous and unlimited political spending. The second is the Obama administration’s overzealous prosecution of leaks. Unfortunately, for those who would like to see these policy problems resolved, the wrong party is angry about them and the wrong party is complacent.

She had to endure the public humiliation of his sexting scandal, but now it turns out that Anthony Weiner’s wife was the driving force behind his comeback. Huma Abedin put her feelings of betrayal aside and backed her husband to run for mayor of New York in this year’s election. She has also been working her close connections to the Clinton family to get Mr Weiner access to wealthy and powerful donors who he so badly needs. Having been frozen out of politics when he quit his Congressional seat, Mr Weiner is now effectively relying on his wife

Michelle Obama visited the slave quarters at Decatur House — a red-brick structure that sits in the shadow of the White House — that once housed the black men and women who served 19th century politicians, military and business leaders who lived in the property. The first lady, who is the nation’s only first lady to have descended from people held in slavery, made the stop as part of an announcement that the historic Decatur House

BUFFALO — A western New York man has pleaded guilty to filing more than 100 tax returns under the names of people who had recently died. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Buffalo says 42-year-old John Berry Jr. of Dunkirk pleaded guilty Tuesday to making a false claim against the United States. Prosecutors say he filed 122 false income tax returns in 2008 and 2009 seeking refunds totaling $218,000. Authorities say more than $92,000 was deposited directly into his bank account. Berry faces up to five years in prison when he’s sentenced in August.

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. She was determined to

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

Eva Longoria is backing up her beauty with a whole lot of brain. The actress graduated with a master´s degree Wednesday. Longoria, 38, took home a real degree (not an honorary one) in Chicano studies from Cal State Northridge, where she physically attended classes for three years, according to TMZ. "Big day today!!! Very excited to graduate for my master´s degree in Chicano studies! You´re never too old or too busy to continue your education!" the actress wrote on her Who Say site Wednesday, sharing loads of pics of her big day, posing with her family, cohorts and diploma.

What´s so interesting about 60 tea partiers protesting the IRS in San Jose, California on Tuesday, May 21st? The fact that this bit of information was conveyed to the protesters by a Department of Homeland Security officer who was also in attendance. What was a DHS agent doing at the San Jose Tea Party protest? (snip) they weren´t just spying on us in San Jose and monitoring us in San Francisco, they were watching us throughout the entire state

President Obama on Thursday nominated Victoria Nuland, a State Department official involved in the editing of the administration´s talking points on Benghazi, to be the next assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs. Nuland, a career foreign service officer who was until recently State´s top spokesperson, had long been expected to be nominated the post to replace Philip Gordon, who Obama picked to serve as Middle East coordinator for the National Security Council. Nuland´s nomination -- which requires Senate confirmation -- could come under scrutiny from Republicans who see her as playing a central role in shaping

On “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Barack Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said embattled IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights and will be hauled back to appear before his panel again. The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”
