| WASHINGTON- As New Year´s Day approached 150 years ago, all eyes were on President Abraham Lincoln in expectation of what he warned 100 days earlier would be coming - his final proclamation declaring all slaves in states rebelling against the Union to be "forever free." A tradition began Dec. 31, 1862, as many black churches held Watch Night services, awaiting word that Lincoln´s Emancipation Proclamation would take effect amid a bloody Civil War. Later, congregations listened as the president´s historic words were read aloud. (Snip) This year, the Watch Night tradition will follow the historic document to its home

And today, the Democrat party has ensured they be "forever dependant on government", or never free.
This can be a distinction for Republicans to ask any any chance, "have the liberal Democrat policies helped you in the last 45 years"?

Need to fix that first sentence AP: As New Year´s Day approached 150 years ago, all eyes were on Republican President Abraham Lincoln in expectation of what he warned 100 days earlier would be coming - his final proclamation declaring all slaves in states rebelling against the Union to be "forever free. There you go - no charge and you´re welcome.

Notice that Lincoln´s proclamation did not free the slaves in states that remained in the Union (like Maryland). The purpose of this executive action was to try to foment bloody slave uprisings in the Confederacy. If Lincoln had simply offered a compensated emancipation, 600,000 Americans would not have died unnecessarily. That´s what England did -- and no War there.

The study guide I use to homeschool my children says that Lincoln´s proclamation was a severe abuse of executive power. He should have been impeached for his actions.

Blacks in the United States have been "forever free" for 150 years, yet many of them blame slavery for their economic state now. To these grievance-mongers I say: Get off your derrieres and do something with your lives. That´s called individual responsibility. Works for people of any race.

#3 nailed it. The more I study Lincoln and the War of Northern Aggression (I´m from New York, by the way), the less I like him.

NPR´s Ari Shapiro posted an interesting Tweet on May 21. He discovered that a cadre of well-known lefty columnists and journalists visited the White House together, three of whom he mentioned by name. Shapiro reported that Jonathan Capehart and Ezra Klein of the Washington Post, and Josh Marshall of the left-wing website TalkingPointsMemo.com were attending a meeting together at the White House. [Tweet] Coffee, Carney, or perhaps some "guidance"? Naturally the tongues on Twitter wagged. Instapundit wondered, for instance, if the "Journ-O-List cavalry" had been called out to solve Obama´s media problem.

Republican South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy admitted that he is stumped by why the media has taken so long to start paying attention to the Benghazi terror attack. “I can tell you this, in my district I’m asked about Benghazi much more than any other issue. I mean, from Costco to Wal-Mart to the church, Benghazi is the number one issue I’m asked about,” he said. “And I think I’m asked about it because it kind of involves what we believe about our republic, which is that we’re not gonna send anybody into harms way, under our flag without

J. Russell George paused for just a moment before he took his seat at the witness table. He wanted to take it all in. The Treasury inspector general whose audit of the IRS had set off a national firestorm had been in this very room before—three decades earlier. That was back when George was a precocious teenager who had worked his way onto the staff of then-Sen. Bob Dole, the powerful Republican chairman of the vaunted Finance Committee. Then, he’d sorted mail and made carbon copies. Now, he was about to testify before the same panel, to present the findings

The head of the Internal Revenue Service’s tax-exempt organizations office, faced with allegations of improper targeting of conservative groups, declared Wednesday that she has done nothing wrong but declined to answer questions, invoking her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. Lois G. Lerner told the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform in an opening statement that members of the panel have already accused her of providing false information to Congress. “I have not done anything wrong,” she said. “I have not broken any laws. I have not violated any IRS regulations. And I have not provided false information

The US Attorney for the District of Columbia, Ronald C. Machen - the man responsible for the aggressive surveillance and phone record scrutiny at Fox News - is also a big donor to the Obama Campaigns. At the time of his appointment, the Washington Post wrote a profile on Machen including this tidbit: Over the years, he has donated $4,350 to Obama´s campaigns. He gave $250 to Obama´s U.S. Senate campaign in 2003, a year before Obama, then an Illinois state senator, emerged on the nation´s political radar, according to campaign finance records.

On May 14, the House Ways and Means Committee demanded the IRS turn over documents and answer questions related to the targeting of conservative groups. The letter was signed by the Chairman David Camp and ranking member Sander Levin of the Committee. The deadline for compliance was May 21. According to House Ways and Means Spokeswoman Sarah Swinehart, "The Committee has not received a response to the Camp-Levin letter." "Chairman Camp expects the IRS to comply and provide full and complete responses to the letter since many of these questions were asked, but went unanswered, in Friday’s hearing,"

WASHINGTON — The Army announced Tuesday that it has suspended the top general at Fort Jackson in South Carolina over allegations of assault and adultery, the latest in a string of sex scandals to rock the military. It was not clear whom Brig. Gen. Bryan Roberts struck or with whom he was involved. Fort Jackson conducts basic training for 60% of the Army´s incoming women recruits. (Snip) According to his Army biography, Roberts is a 29-year veteran. Before assuming command in April 2012, he served in Iraq as head of a unit training Iraqi soldiers.

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Serviced scandal today spread further within the White House and closer to President Obama. White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. But he insisted McDonough and the other White House officials purposely kept Obama out of the loop.McDonough “rightly chose not to take action” to inform Obama, Carney told reporters at the daily White House briefing.

The wheels came off the Obama administration yesterday. We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). The leak was called “egregious.”

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor 3rd. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight committee Wednesday.

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose career in public life came to an abrupt end when he sent lewd pictures to a college student on Twitter, jumped back into politics on Wednesday by announcing a bid for mayor of New York City. “Look, I’ve made some big mistakes and I know I’ve let a lot of people down,” the Democrat said in a 2-minute video announcing his bid. “But I’ve also learned some tough lessons. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

Former Democratic National committee chairman Howard Dean considers the controversy over Benghazi a “joke” and “silly.” “Benghazi is a laughable joke,” Dean proclaimed twice in a discussion with Republican National Committee communications chairman Sean Spicer last week. “With all due respect, governor, when four Americans die serving this country, that’s not a joke, sir,” Spicer responded. “Oh, stop it,” said Dean. The former Democratic presidential candidate also said that there were “no serious questions being asked about Benghazi” and brushed it off as an effort by Republicans to score political points.

Stuart Varney said this morning on "Varney & Co." that one of his producers was given a questionnaire with some surprisingly intrusive questions on it when he switched doctors. One of the questions was whether he/she was concerned about unsecured weapons in the home. Another asked whether he/she was "in a relationship in which you have been physically hurt or are you afraid of your partner?" Judge Andrew Napolitano explained that the question about guns comes out of a post-Sandy Hook executive order by President Obama, but it will be required under Obamacare. Varney expressed amazement
