| One of my New Year’s resolutions is to work harder to persuade ideological friends and foes alike that the way to reduce partisanship and maximize happiness in America is to embrace federalism — the view that we should push as many decisions as possible to the lowest local level feasible. (Snip)For instance, consider the case of Ernest Hemingway’s six-toed cats. According to legend, the writer was given a polydactyl (six-toed) feline named Snowball. Under a deadline, I could not determine whether Snowball was in fact male or female, but assuming he was a he, Snowball managed to overcome the limitations

The number of Americans who understand federalism is markedly small. Most use the term "federal government" as though it meant "national government" (and these days that seems to be what it plans to become).

My impression of federalism means that the bigger the government gets, the more rights and ability to regulate lost at the state/local level. Is that correct?

One problem is that people don´t see the connection between a smothering government and their loss of freedom. Museum guests should be informed that the federal government´s tentacles is reaching down to smother the cats. Does Obama really want the ´Crazy Cat Lady´ demographic storming the capital?

I don´t think he concluded that, #3. He merely stated that federalism reduces partisanship and thus the importance of the federal government when local decisions are left to the locals.
But you´re right when you say that Leftists don´t want that.

No, Jonah, does not think the Left wants less partisanship or more federalism. He is just trying to illustrate why it would be better if they did, and if conservatives pushed it more. The cat thing is what results when the feds recognize no limits whatsoever on the scope of their authority. (I´ve been to the Hemingway House and patted the cats. They seem fine. Also, they are totally in charge. Key West as a whole is a very cat-friendly environment. If you think about it for a minute, you will understand why.)

THE BATHROOM IS LARGE, immaculate and low-lit, finished in rich wood, floor-to-ceiling mirrors and brushed metal. Wearing the thick bathrobe provided by an attendant, I walk from the shower to the wash basin. The heat radiates from the floor through my slippers. I have my own shaving gear with me but still browse through boxes and trays for accoutrements I might prefer. This is one of the nicest lavatories I´ve ever been in. It also happens to be 35,000 feet in the air. I´m aboard one of Emirates Airline´s double-decker Airbus A380s. According to the flight-progress map

It happens now and then. You hear a story so sad, so beautiful, so filled with loss and pain and grief and love, that it makes you cry. Really cry. Two years ago, I was making a grocery run for my family on Memorial Day when a story came on the local NPR station in Oxford, Miss. It was about a father whose son had been killed in action in northwest Afghanistan. The father was Paul Monti; his son was Sergeant Jared Monti. Jared died in Afghanistan trying to save the life of one of his men.

What would help a lot right now, as the chilling reality of savagery engulfs us, would be a cultural green light to begin calling evil what it is, to begin calling it by its name, to stop dancing around demographics because of the fear someone, somewhere will take offense. President Obama’s speech at the National Defense University calling for an end to the war on terror forces the question of who gets to declare peace. The Left wing in our political debate has been agitating for some time to repeal the authorization to use military force that the Congress passed after 9/11. The President boarded the bandwagon yesterday. He vowed he would sign no laws designed to expand the mandate and declared outright that he looks forward “to engaging Congress and the American people in efforts to refine, and ultimately repeal” the congressional mandate to use force.

Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election.
