| A one-day gun buyback event in Los Angeles on Wednesday gathered 2,037 firearms, including 75 assault weapons and a rocket launcher, officials said. The total was nearly 400 more weapons than were collected in a similar buyback earlier this year. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said the collection at two locations was so successful that the city ran out of money for supermarket gift cards and got a private donation through the city controller to bolster the pot. The gun buyback was moved up from its usual Mother´s Day date in response to the horrific massacre Dec. 14 that claimed the lives of

Comments: A rocket launcher??? Ironically, not called an "assault weapon." Only in LA [I hope]. Wonder how many gift cards the person got for that?

Great way to get rid of useless junk...or dispose of a murder weapon.

Good one, #1.
But I´m thinking it isn´t the bad guys who are turning in their guns.

Nothing symbolizes feel good liberal lunacy like gun buyback programs. No lunatic and no criminal is going to participate other than perhaps to turn in a few recently stolen guns for ready cash, no questions asked.
Now if this were a sting operation, I might be all for it.

Anyone stupid enough to participate in this propoganda stunt is not smart enough to own a gun. It is their property and they can do what they want with it, but I would think a friend or neighbor might be interested in buying it, rather than having it melted down. I know I would.

How many of those guns were stolen so they could get gift cards ?
Some of those guns end up back on the street with no explaination.

The guns are stolen and likely worthless or, as #1 mentioned, implicated in a crime. No one is getting rid of perfectly good guns in this scenario.
There have been a number of burglaries not too far from me where guns have been stolen. I wonder if they ended up in this "buy back". If the actual owners could identify them, would they be able to get their property back? Doubtful.

I heard about this when See the BS "news" had the idiot mayor or LA on TV. I wonder if the street gangs like the Bloods, Crips and MS-13 helped with the buyback by turning in their weapons. Somehow I doubt it.

I wonder how many of these guns were F&F guns? If so, isn´t the government essentially paying twice for the same weapons?

So, expended AT4 rocket tubs are now considered "dangerous weapons" worthy of payment in a "pay fo confiscation"-scheme? ("Buy-back" is an Orwellian misnomer of the worst kind - it suggests the state "owns" the guns and the little people only possess them at the whim of the state).
if that is the case, then I will paint a bunch of Christmas wrapping paper tubes green, stencil "Rocket Launcher" across the side, Wile E. Coyote/Acme-style, and try to get some cash for disposing of my "weapon".
Also, if expended tubes are now fair game, will the City of Los Angeles also buy back expended brass?

The Brits owned no guns as a result of this mentality at the outbreak of WWII, when they were so terrified of a Nazi invasion and being overrun that they made special appeal to the United States for guns. We gave them tens of thousands. After the war, when the coast was finally clear, the Brits threw them all away again.
These L.A. idiots are clearly the same stock of liberals that existed in England before and after the war. It´s only fitting that they´ll live to see the day they wished they had that firearm back.

President Obama’s speech on Thursday was the most important statement on counterterrorism policy since the 2001 attacks, a momentous turning point in post-9/11 America. For the first time, a president stated clearly and unequivocally that the state of perpetual warfare that began nearly 12 years ago is unsustainable for a democracy and must come to an end in the not-too-distant future. “Our systematic effort to dismantle terrorist organizations must continue,” Mr. Obama said in the speech at the National Defense University. “But this war, like all wars, must end. That’s what history advises.

Madrid - On May 1, 2021 Baltasar Garzón’s suspension from the bench for authorizing illegal wiretaps in the Gürtel corruption investigation will expire. Hong Kong - The new H7N9 bird flu virus can be transmitted between mammals not only via direct contact but also in airborne droplets, and may be capable of spreading from person to person, Chinese and American researchers have found. (Snip) "The findings suggest that the possibility of this virus evolving further to form the basis of a future pandemic threat cannot be excluded," said the research team, led by bird flu expert and microbiologist Yi Guan. Washington - Across-the-board budget cuts have created Furlough Friday in Washington and elsewhere, as the one-day closing of four federal agencies forced an unpaid day off for 115,000 workers. Employees at the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Internal Revenue Service and the Office of Management and Budget stayed home on Friday. The furlough affects about 5 percent of the federal workforce, according to Cory Bythrow, communications director at the National Federation of Federal Employees, a union representing government

New York - New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said there is mounting evidence that Bank of America Corp, Wells Fargo and Co and other banks violated the terms of a settlement designed to end mortgage servicing abuses. Schneiderman - who has said he plans to sue Bank of America and Wells Fargo for failing to live up to their obligations under the deal - said other states had found similar problems. The rugged landscape created by volcanic eruptions and tectonic plate shifts in east and south Africa millions of years ago may be what prompted our human ancestors to start walking on two legs, a study said Friday. The research published in the journal Antiquity challenges the commonly-held theory that early hominins (members of the broad human family) were forced onto two feet on the ground because climate change reduced the number of trees they lived in. Annapolis, Md. - President Obama used a commencement speech before Naval Academy graduates on Friday to urge them to follow an “inner compass” and to warn that rising numbers of sexual assaults in the military threatened to erode America’s faith in the armed forces. The president praised the military as the nation’s “most trusted institution,” but took note of the recent cases in which service members have been charged with sexual assault. He said those people “threaten the trust and discipline which makes our military strong.” “We need your honor, that inner compass that guides

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. She was determined to

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

President Obama on Thursday nominated Victoria Nuland, a State Department official involved in the editing of the administration´s talking points on Benghazi, to be the next assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs. Nuland, a career foreign service officer who was until recently State´s top spokesperson, had long been expected to be nominated the post to replace Philip Gordon, who Obama picked to serve as Middle East coordinator for the National Security Council. Nuland´s nomination -- which requires Senate confirmation -- could come under scrutiny from Republicans who see her as playing a central role in shaping

Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election. Levin said, “I don’t believe for two seconds that Obama wasn’t aware of this.”

Anthony Weiner’s New York mayoral candidacy was only made more improbable today after he revealed that he visited a Houston psychiatric facility following his resignation from Congress in 2011. Haunted by scandal surrounding his sexually explicit online communications with women, the Democratic former congressman sought treatment for his compulsive behavior from mental health professionals at the Gabbard Center. According to its website, the facility provides “3-day outpatient psychiatric evaluation,” particularly to “professionals who are in personal or professional crises.” While Weiner did not disclose
