| At the moment it is a faint object, visible only in sophisticated telescopes as a point of light moving slowly against the background stars. It doesn´t seem much – a frozen chunk of rock and ice – one of many moving in the depths of space. But this one is being tracked with eager anticipation by astronomers from around the world, and in a year everyone could know its name. Comet Ison could draw millions out into the dark to witness what could be the brightest comet seen in many generations – brighter even than the full Moon.
|
Comments: Old enough to remember the last ´comet of the century´ Kahoutek, and how it fizzled out. Hopefully Ison will be different.

OP you took the words out of my mouth about Kohoutek. I was a freshman in college, and rearranged my schedule so I could take the intro Astronomy course and see it through the big telescope.
Not even a glimpse.
Did get to see Halley´s comet in 1986, but had to take an airplane ride to get above the local light pollution.
(I do have a date with my sister for western Kentucky in about 4.5 years for the total eclipse)

All ancient cultures, Maya, Hindu, Chinese regarded comets as harbingers of downfall for the powerful - kings in olden days. Lets see what this one does.

I don´t know where you guys live, or what you expect, but Hyakutake, and the following year´s Hale-Bopp, were glorious and easily visible. My brother took some backyard pics linked below. I could never understand people who thought they were no big deal, or worse yet didn´t bother looking. http://www.personal.psu.edu/faculty/m/x/mxm14/comets.htm

I can almost guarantee that wherever I am, the night will be cloudy, with heavy rain and almost zero visibility.

The only instrument besides big telescopes that saw Kahoutek in December 1973 was the USAF DSP satellite #1 and that wasn´t even the satellite´s intended purpose. It had to be pointed off earth to do so.
Hopefully, ISON will not be another fizzle and we can all enjoy it with just our eyes.

yes it "could". read how many could´s are in the story. they over-hype and over-hype. Smart money is on maybe catching a glimpse as it nears sun with good binoculars. If it really outshines the moon, I´ll be thrilled but i am not getting my hopes up based on the last 50 years of comet predictions.

I remember Hale-Bopp in the morning sky when I commuted to work 15+ years ago. I hope this is at least as bright.

It was the first time in recent memory that the Iowa GOP Lincoln Day Dinner sold out nearly two weeks in advance, and it was on the strength of its headliner, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul (snip) "They say the Federal Reserve has been robbed. And we said, really?!” Paul said, his voice nearly cracking in mock disbelief. “They said, ‘Yeah, but we caught the thieves. They got in front of the safe, they had the big safe open, but they were perplexed. They were flummoxed. They didn’t know what to do with minus sixteen trillion dollars!’ ”

Just get on a bike. It works. It really does. It doesn´t matter if you´re exhausted by the bike debate, or the alleged bike debate, or whatever this supposedly acid conflict should be called, because I´m pretty sure bikes are nowhere near as divisive as they are sometimes portrayed. I don´t know anyone who would identify themselves as ´anti-bike.´ I don´t actually know what ´anti-bike´ means. It sounds more miserable than being ´anti-beer.´ Anti-bike? Really? I believe there are some worthy issues about the growing role of the bicycle in daily lives,

Keith Olbermann, the talented but difficult talk show host, has had a rather checkered resume. ESPN. Fox Sports. MSNBC. Current TV. His departures have generally been unpretty, including his last gig with Al Gore´s network (soon to become Al-Jazeera). But he has found new employment at Turner Broadcasting. And it´s not CNN. Rather, he´s joining TBS as a studio host for its baseball coverage during the post season with Hall of Famer pitcher Dennis Eckersley. In other words, he´s going back to his roots as a sports guy.

In a bizarre op-ed in The Charleston Gazette last week, journalism professor Christopher Swindell argued that the National Rifle Association “advocates armed rebellion against the duly elected government of the United States of America.” Stirring words, to be sure, but Swindell was hardly done — not even close. He also said that the NRA is guilty of “treason” “worthy of the firing squad.” “To support the new NRA president’s agenda of arming the populace for confrontation with the government is bloody treason,” Swindell charged in his wacky essay.

A Mars rock that bears a passing resemblance to a rodent is scuttling across the Internet with gusto, even inspiring some fans to set up a Twitter account in its name. UFO buffs spotted the purported "Mars rat" in a panoramic photo snapped in September 2012 by NASA´s Curiosity rover. Zooming in on a portion of the image reveals what appears to be a rodent crouching between two rocks, its nose to the ground. "It´s a cute rodent on Mars. Note its lighter-color upper and lower eyelids, its nose and cheek areas, its ear, its front leg and stomach,"

In an email to LAObserved.com, our erstwhile antagonist Cynthia Rawitch responded yesterday to our Friday reminiscence of our long-ago college free-speech dispute. Here are her comments in their entirety: Writing more than 7,000 words about an event that took place in college nearly 25 years ago seems to represent a level of obsession that I can´t understand. James leaves out a number of salient facts because they don´t fit the narrative he recalls.

The vice provost of California State University, Northridge, retires today. Ordinarily that would be unworthy of a national newspaper´s notice, but Cynthia Rawitch was a formative figure in your humble columnist´s professional and intellectual development. (snip) Her time as publisher was busy and marked with a lawsuit regarding free speech. Former student James Taranto, now editor of OpinionJournal.com and a member of The Wall Street Journal editorial board, sued for being suspended after he printed a cartoon on the paper´s opinion page.

Amid a steady rise of backlash, Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old former National Security Agency contractor who was the source of a spring of leaks about the agency´s surveillance methods, conducted a live chat on The Guardian´s website Monday morning. Judging from some of the pointed questions he´s been asked and the reaction to newly leaked revelations over the past few days, it´s clear that much of the sympathy and support Snowden had built up for his early exposures is eroding. Many Americans supported his decision to leak information about a pair of National Security Agency surveillance programs, which, he detailed, gathered information

As NewsBusters reported last week, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin called out vulgarian comedian Bill Maher for referring to her Down Syndrome son Trig as "retarded." On ABC´s The View Monday, co-host Barbara Walters astonishingly defended Maher saying, "I don´t think he intended it to be mean-spirited" (video follows with transcript and commentary): WHOOPI GOLDBERG: At a recent standup show in Las Vegas, comedian Bill Maher apparently called Sarah Palin’s five-year-old developmentally-challenged son Trig retarded. And Sarah blasted him on Twitter as a bully. Is that, is it, is he a bully? Is he a bad, what is he?

Five months into his second term, allies and enemies are as confounded as ever about who President Obama really is. Is he the dyed-in-the-wool liberal that his biggest supporters and critics suggest? Or is he a pragmatic, even cynical, politician who cares more for his popularity than taking risks for his ideological goals or living up to his rhetoric? Even in the short period since his reelection, Obama has provided evidence to support conflicting interpretations. His efforts to pass immigration reform, the unsuccessful push for stricter gun controls and tax hikes on high earners buttress the case for Obama-as-ideologue.

Jeb Bush says he’s not worried that his work toward comprehensive immigration reform and his ties to the GOP establishment will alienate conservatives and negatively impact a potential 2016 presidential campaign, referring to critics as “the chirpers.” “If I decide to run for office again, it will be based on what I believe, and it will be based on my record,” the former Florida governor said in an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network’s David Brody. “And that record was one of solving problems completely from a conservative prospective.” Bush (R) pointed to his conservative

Is Marco Rubio, R-Fla., getting played by Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.? During his interview with ABC’s Jonathan Karl this morning, Rubio didn’t even seem to understand what that meant. “Are you being played by the Democrats?” asked Karl. “Is Chuck Schumer playing you?” “I don’t — I quite frankly, I don’t even know what that means,” Rubio replied. “Is he using you?” Karl continued. “Is he using you to try to accomplish something that the Democrats want and is not — not a conservative bill?” Rubio responded that immigration reform was a bi-partisan issue that “all Americans

Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.

Marco Rubio. Paul Ryan. The IRS. Illegal immigration. And fraud to the tune of billions.. Now there’s a combustible mix. Let’s start with the IRS, illegal immigration and fraud. We’ll come back in a minute to Senator Rubio and Congressman Ryan. For those who came in late, a year before the IRS scandals burst onto the scene in early May of 2013, an alert investigative reporter for WTHR-Indianapolis (Channel 13), Bob Segall by name, produced a stunning piece of journalism. Segall’s video report is found here and we will quote from his story for the basics.
