| The strip malls and the Main Streets fall silent. The ringing cash registers and the happy cries of children are but ghostly echoes across silent streets. But the Christ child born in a manger 2,000 years ago lives, liberating the hearts of sinners and transforming the lives of the wicked. The authentic story of the redeeming power of the Christmas message is nowhere more vividly illustrated than in the incredible life of an English slaver named John Newton. John Newton was born 300 years ago into a seafaring family in Liverpool. His mother was a godly woman whose faith gave her life meaning.

Amazing Grace is a beautiful hymn and once you know the story behind it,it becomes much more powerful in the emotional response it evokes.

Wintley Phipps sang Amazing Grace on one of Bill Gaither´s programs (I think it was at Carnegie Hall), and it was outstanding. He said he could picture Newton listening to a slave singing in his ship and later setting his poem Amazing Grace to that melody. At the Library of Congress, Phipps looked up the song. It said, ´´Words by John Newton. Melody by Unknown.´´ He went on to say that when he gets to Heaven, yes, he wants to meet Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; ´´but, Lord, I really want to meet that slave ´unknown.´ ´´ There are a lot of unknowns we´ll appreciate getting to know in Heaven.
Wes Pruden says of Newton, ´´He ... with repentance and belief was at last born again into the new life in Christ.´´ Christianity isn´t just a mental consent to a religious system. It is a supernatural rebirth. Jesus is waiting to give that wonderful gift to ´´whosoever´´ will come to Him.

cry every time I listen to Amazing Grace. I love to hear it played on bagpipes. It was moving to hear Andrea Bocelli sing it at the concert in the Park: "was blind, but now I see".

Ironically, the hymn most associated with Christianity never once mentions the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
It´s a strange thing that I don´t care which "professional" sings it, it never sounds as good as when I sing it in my own head.

Oakland – Judgement day may finally be at hand for a California evangelical radio network used by a preacher to predict—incorrectly—the apocalypse. Oakland-based Family Radio has sold its three largest radio stations, and tax records show the nonprofit network saw its net assets drop to $29.2 million by the end of 2011, from a net worth of $135 million four years earlier. The radio network is run by Harold Camping, who predicted the world would end on May 21, 2011, only to later concede he had no evidence of an impending apocalypse.

Barack Obama can relax and get to work on his hook shot and his putting. The presidential legacy he has fretted over is now clear, well established, safe and secure. The presidential historians can fire up their laptops and let the processing of words begin. It’s too early to conclude, as some Republicans have, that the dam has broken, that the sleeping mainstream media has begun to come out of its sleeping-sickness stupor, and that even Democrats are about to leap out of the way. Not yet. But the dam has clearly sprung a leak.

WASHINGTON - There were new questions Saturday night concerning if anyone in the White House was aware of the IRS´ targeting of conservative groups. Inspector General Russell George said he informed a deputy at the Treasury Department in June of 2012 about the probe into the IRS. The Treasury Department confirmed the timeline but said they did not know the details of the investigation until last week.(Snip)Marcus Owens ran the tax-exempt division at the IRS for 10 years. He said it isn´t difficult to figure out who´s doing what at the agency.

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Friday urged congressional leaders to raise the debt limit and insisted that the White House is not going to negotiate over the increase because lawmakers have "no choice." "We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate."
