Once There Were Giants

"Second Lieutenant Daniel K. Inouye distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism in action on 21 April 1945, in the vicinity of San Terenzo, Italy. While attacking a defended ridge guarding an important road junction, Second Lieutenant Inouye skillfully directed his platoon through a hail of automatic weapon and small arms fire, in a swift enveloping movement that resulted in the capture of an artillery and mortar post and brought his men to within 40 yards of the hostile force. Emplaced in bunkers and rock formations, the enemy halted the advance with crossfire from three machine guns.

Comments:
Off hand I´d say Inouye is at least 3 feet taller than John Kerry. Didn´t care for his politics but he earned his Medal of Honor.

With very few exceptions, today´s elected officials are among the worst this country has to offer.

His Medal of Honor was well-deserved. But a giant in the Senate? Not so much.

I had to revert back to my original screen
name.

The worst thing that Inouye and felloow senator Akaka did was to push through a law affecting ´native hawaiians´ giving them capacious rights much like native americans. The problem with that is that it provides for goodies for the ill defined native hawaiians, to the exclusion of whites.
I suspect that law will be a court-entangled mess for decades to come. It may be worse than the Pigford case.

...and that my friends is what happens when the President of the United States has your service record doctored fifty years later.

Mr. William Jefferson Clinton, is so disgusting that he thinks nothing of fabricating records just to award one of his friends the Congressional Medal of Honor.

This Senator deserved the Medal of Honor about as much as John Kerry deserves to be referred to as an American citizen.

His political integrity was in the arm he lost.

He was another liberal tax-and-spend hate-whitey Democrat, and as such, was a carbuncle on the arse of our country for decades.

Neil deGrasse Tyson, astrophysicist, author and host of the FOX series "Cosmos," is coming to Omaha. Tyson will speak in association with the sixth Apostacon, an annual Omaha conference for "atheists, humanists, agnostics, skeptics, apostates, freethinkers, rationalists and Pastafarians." The conference, which started in Lincoln in 2009, has a Flying Spaghetti Monster for a logo and bills itself as the "sauciest freethought conference in the Noodle-verse." Tyson´s speech will take place Sept. 19 (which is Talk Like a Pirate Day, incidentally) at the DoubleTree Hilton, 1616 Dodge St. "An Evening of Scientific Inquiry" with Tyson is sponsored by the Omaha

A planet warmed by human-produced greenhouse gases poses significant risks already to people, cities and nations today and not just in the far-off future, according to a report the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change will release at the end of this week. And those risks could mean "abrupt or drastic changes" that could lead to unstoppable and irreversible climate shifts like the runaway melting of Greenland´s glacial ice or the rapid drying out of South America´s Amazon rainforest, the Christian Science Monitor reports. The dangers of a warming Earth aren´t limited to animals like polar bears. They´re immediate and very human,

For the second time in what has been a frigid winter in the Northeastern United States, Niagara falls has come to an icy halt as the six million cubic feet of water that typically flow over the falls every minute has frozen over. The flow of water over the falls typically can withstand icy temperatures like those that have frozen much of the country this winter, but Monday´s high of 9 degrees Fahrenheit brought Niagara Falls to a standstill - and photographers were there to snap some stunning images of the frozen waterfall. In January, another record-breaking cold front managed

An Arkansas man accused of shooting dead a 15-year-old girl after a group of teens messed with his car as part of an ongoing prank war says he only wanted to scare the kids — not kill. Willie Noble, 48, faces a murder charge after he stormed out of his Little Rock home around 1 a.m. Saturday and opened fire on a car full of seven teens. Adrian Broadway later died after one of the bullets hit her in the head. Noble first found his car covered in mayonnaise, toilet paper, eggs and leaves late Friday, then waited for the

CROSSVILLE — “Lies, damned lies and statistics” is a quote often attributed to Mark Twain. It should be a required quotation printed at the top of each government report and on the TV screen during an Obama speech. I once sat on a committee whose function, for want of a better description, would be that of quality control. It was our job to review records for compliance with legally mandated report formats. I quickly learned that the small group that physically reviewed the records had an interesting way of reporting results. The meeting would go something like this: “The number

We’ve all seen the wooden crosses and other roadside memorials to loved ones killed in automobile accidents. Three years ago, the Georgia Department of Transportation, deeming the makeshift memorials a distraction to drivers and a safety hazard, began offering to place state-approved memorials at the sites of fatal wrecks. For a $100 fee, GDOT places a white sign with the name of the deceased under the words, “Drive Safely, In Memory.” Wednesday, a member of PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, filed an application with GDOT to have a memorial placed at the Hall County site where a

Mike Gambardello, a construction worker from Pennsauken, has been hunting for 17 of his 25 years. He recalls clearly and with pride taking down his first deer, a four-point buck, in the Pine Barrens at age 15. His father was there to see it. "It´s the biggest high you can ever get in your life," he said. But in the last several years, Gambardello has become increasingly aware of other hunters in the woods: Coyotes. "Eight years ago, it was very, very rare," he said. "Now walk down the road, and you see more coyote tracks than deer tracks." He

After presenting at the Academy Awards this year, Kim Novak didn’t want to leave her house. The Hitchcock screen siren, 81, was too humiliated to venture from her home near the Rogue River in Oregon. She read the cruel posts and Internet snark about her appearance, and it was just too much. “It got to me like it gets kids and teenagers,” she told the Associated Press. The “Vertigo” actress, considered one of the great beauties in her day, posted a note on her Facebook wall Thursday, acknowledging that she’d gotten fat injections in her face and addressing her halted

President Obama addressed the White House press corps today, announcing that with the final numbers in, Obamacare´s exchanges have attracted eight million sign-ups -- 35 percent of whom are "under the age of 35," he said. Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. As recently as last month, the share of "young invincibles" signing up for plans was struggling in the 25 percent range, far short of the actuarial target of nearly 40 percent. A leap into the mid-30´s, while still shy of the goal, would constitute a major step, and would bode well for the risk pools'

It’s the stuff of Westerns: a showdown on the desert plains, the big bad government against an underdog farmer. Though the story has only grabbed national headlines in the past several days, rancher Cliven Bundy has illegally grazed cattle on the Nevada land surrounding his farm for over 20 years. He hasn’t paid grazing fees since 1993, and refuses to renew the necessary grazing permit.(Snip)Rather than using the avenues and pathways presented to him, Bundy has staunchly declared his own law and allegiances. Unfortunately, reality doesn’t work this way. If only it did—we could rebel for paying stupid taxes, refuse to

A group of seven multiracial Washington and Lee University (W&L) students are demanding the school remove all Confederate flags from campus and "acknowledge" General Robert E. Lee´s "dishonorable side." According to the Roanoke Times, "seven multiracial students, calling themselves ´The Committee,´" have also demanded the school "acknowledge and apologize for participating in chattel slavery." They want recognition of "Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the undergraduate campus" and an end to "neo-Confederates" marching across campus "to the Lee Chapel on Lee-Jackson Day." The students say they will "engage in civil disobedience" if their demands are not met by September 1st. They added: "The

The White House is going to war with another fox — and this time, it’s personal. The Wall Street Journal reports that a red fox has been causing chaos around the White House, tripping security alarms, digging up Michelle’s garden and distracting the president from his duties. The Secret Service won’t give any details about how often the fox trips the White House’s obviously sophisticated security alarms, but rest assured, officials say, they’re watching. President Obama was apparently “stunned” to see the fox roaming freely down the oft-photographed White House colonnade, home to the world’s shortest, but most dramatic, outdoor strolls. To "honor the dignity and work of immigrants," Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi helps Bishop Marc Andrus wash the feet of two children Thursday at Saint John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in San Francisco. Pelosi also used the occasion to talk about passing HR15 - bipartisan immigration legislation that her office says would "reduce the deficit by nearly $1 trillion, secure our borders, unite our families, protect our workers and provide an earned pathway to citizenship." The Democratic leader´s ceremony coincides with Pope Francis´ similar ceremony in Rome to mark Holy Week.
