Cardinal Gibbons athletes
offer heartfelt gift

Luke Raymond cannot wrap up one of his most heartfelt gifts this Christmas. His offering is much too personal. Raymond and about 30 of his classmates at Cardinal Gibbons High offer a different kind of gift – support for those grieving the loss of loved ones. As members of the school’s Pallbearers Society, the group assembles several times each year to help carry the coffins of people they have never met. They generally know almost nothing about the deceased. Gibbons is a nonboarding parochial school, but pallbearers are available to any family in the community,

What a touching story - unusual from the N&O!!! Have been in this area for 25 years and this is the first I have heard of this service. Also, I can see how this service is needed and how much it is appreciated. God Bless these young men!

Just the other day, my local newspaper published a lengthy article about the dozens of Muslim highschools in NJ who have performed similar selfless services.

This is a noble and meaningful service. God bless these kids.

When my mother died, we were newcomers in the parish, didn´t know anybody, and were about 1,000 miles from Mom´s hometown: really didn´t expect anybody at the funeral. I just humbly mentioned to the pastor that Mom would´ve appreciated something like a "Kyrie": it was the tradition of her earlier years.

I was so grateful when the choir came and did the main parts of the Mass in Latin, and the associate pastor sang "Panis Angelicus." Some young guys from the State University Catholic students group joined the ushers in carrying the coffin.

Just inexpressibly beautiful and consoling. Or in the words of the Mass: right and just.

When my brother died in the south and was brought back north for burial, (alongside his wife), the kids had to pay paulbearers. Sad but true. There was no family or friends left around there to help.

Rubio Stares Down the Right
Over ´Undocumented Democrats´
National Journal, by Tim Alberta    Original Article

Marco Rubio was not amused. The senator from Florida had listened patiently as a panel of hand-picked conservatives, lined up across a long table at the front of the room, took turns speaking about the prospects of immigration reform.(snip)Referencing a Jay Leno one-liner, Burgess questioned fellow conservatives about the wisdom of giving citizenship to "11 million undocumented Democrats." Laughter, some of it nervous, spread throughout the room. But not everyone found Burgess´ crack funny. According to several people who attended the June 5th gathering, Rubio glared at Burgess.

Is Marco Rubio, R-Fla., getting played by Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.? During his interview with ABC’s Jonathan Karl this morning, Rubio didn’t even seem to understand what that meant. “Are you being played by the Democrats?” asked Karl. “Is Chuck Schumer playing you?” “I don’t — I quite frankly, I don’t even know what that means,” Rubio replied. “Is he using you?” Karl continued. “Is he using you to try to accomplish something that the Democrats want and is not — not a conservative bill?” Rubio responded that immigration reform was a bi-partisan issue that “all Americans

Gang of Eight member Bob Menendez advised Republicans to accept legalization status for current illegal immigrants if they ever want to see another president from their party. “I would tell my Republican colleagues — both in the House and the Senate — that the road to the White House comes through a road with a pathway to legalization,” the New Jersey senator said on State of the Union this morning. “Without it, there’ll never be a road to the White House for the Republican party.” Menendez also warned of triggers on border security

An employee of Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) president Grover Norquist and a political ally of “Gang of Eight” member Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) believe groups opposed to the immigration bill pending in the U.S. Senate are "nativists," Breitbart News has learned. ATR’s Josh Culling and Hispanic Leadership Fund (HLF) president Mario Lopez will make the argument on a conference call with mainstream media reporters on Friday at 11 AM EDT. Brad Bailey of the organization called Texas Immigration Studies will join them on the call. “As the momentum behind immigration reform continues to

Senate Says No To Border
Security-First Amendment
National Review Online, by Andrew Stiles    Original Article

The Senate has rejected an amendment to the Gang of Eight bill calling for a “border security first” approach to immigration reform. A motion to table the amendment, which was authored by Republican senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa and previously defeated in the Judiciary Committee, passed 57 to 43, largely on party lines. The measure would have required the Department of Homeland Security to demonstarate effective security of the southern border for six months before illegal immigration are granted legal status. The Gang’s proposal would provide legal status before additional border security measures are measured or implemented.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc has in recent months been only hiring temporary workers at many of its U.S. stores, the first time the world´s largest retailer has done so outside of the holiday shopping season. A Reuters survey of 52 stores run by the largest U.S. private employer in the past month, including one in every U.S. state, showed that 27 were hiring only temps, 20 were hiring a combination of regular full, part-time and temp jobs, and five were not hiring at all. If the GOP is this stupid,

Democrats terrify Hispanics into thinking they’ll be lynched if they vote for Republicans, and then turn around and taunt Republicans for not winning a majority of the Hispanic vote. This line of attack has real resonance with our stupidest Republicans. (Proposed Republican primary targets: Sens. Kelly Ayotte, Jeff Flake, Lindsey Graham and Marco Rubio.) Which explains why Republicans are devoting all their energy to slightly increasing their share of the Hispanic vote while alienating everyone else in America. It must be fun for liberals to manipulate Republicans into focusing on hopeless causes

A group of whistleblowers, including a number of aviation experts, have come forward in a new documentary to claim that the official explanation for the crash of TWA Flight 800 was wrong and a gas tank explosion did not bring down the flight off the coast of Long Island 17 years ago. However, the six whistleblowers, all part of the original investigation team, stopped short of saying the plane was shot down. Flight 800, a Boeing 747, had just taken off from JFK airport with 230 people aboard on July 17, 1996 enroute to Paris when it exploded

An attorney whose firm represents two Benghazi whistleblowers said Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, lied to the Senate when he said there was never a “stand down” order during the Benghazi attack on Sept. 11, 2012. “What was fascinating is that he explained his lie to them,” Joe DiGenova, an attorney representing one of the whistleblowers, told CNSNews.com. “He actually said they were sent to Tripoli. They were needed in Benghazi,” said DiGenova, a former U.S. attorney, now with the Washington firm of DiGenova & Toensing.

Amid a steady rise of backlash, Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old former National Security Agency contractor who was the source of a spring of leaks about the agency´s surveillance methods, conducted a live chat on The Guardian´s website Monday morning. Judging from some of the pointed questions he´s been asked and the reaction to newly leaked revelations over the past few days, it´s clear that much of the sympathy and support Snowden had built up for his early exposures is eroding. Many Americans supported his decision to leak information about a pair of National Security Agency surveillance programs, which, he detailed, gathered information

Likening religious schools to segregation--a racist system that forced blacks to attend different schools and use different facilities than whites in the American South--President Barack Obama told a town hall meeting for youth in Belfast, Northern Ireland on Monday that there should not be Catholic and Protestant schools because such schools cause division. "Because issues like segregated schools and housing, lack of jobs and opportunity--symbols of history that are a source of pride for some and pain for others--these are not tangential to peace; they’re essential to it,"

Listening to Barack Obama give his speech in Belfast on Monday, it was hard not to stifle a yawn. I kept waiting for the part when he would say something interesting, but, about three quarters of the way through, realised it wasn’t going to come. Judging from television pictures some of his young audience felt the same, after the initial rush of euphoria of receiving the rock star president in their midst had passed. This is not surprising, for we had already heard this number about the inspirational role of the Northern Ireland peace process and the Emerald Isle’s

Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.

Marco Rubio. Paul Ryan. The IRS. Illegal immigration. And fraud to the tune of billions.. Now there’s a combustible mix. Let’s start with the IRS, illegal immigration and fraud. We’ll come back in a minute to Senator Rubio and Congressman Ryan. For those who came in late, a year before the IRS scandals burst onto the scene in early May of 2013, an alert investigative reporter for WTHR-Indianapolis (Channel 13), Bob Segall by name, produced a stunning piece of journalism. Segall’s video report is found here and we will quote from his story for the basics.
