| Look around your Christmas gathering today and spot the person who showed up without gifts. Now decide whether this person is: 1) a cheapskate 2) too busy and important for the mundane things in life 3) broke and not about to go into debt to buy something people don’t need anyway 4) believes it’s better to receive than give, or 5) he is one of the growing number of people who shop after Christmas and, essentially, give their friends and relatives verbal IOUs today: “Sorry, Mom, I just couldn’t get to the store. I’ll take care of ya later.”

Up here on Minnesota´s Iron Range, a sizable part of the population came here from Serbia over one hundred years ago. The Serbian Orthodox Church still uses the Gregorian Calendar, so "Serbian Christmas" comes on January 7th.
We used to joke that the old Serbians took all the money the saved on Christmas shopping over the years and when they retired from the mines they all traded in their Chevys for Buicks, thinking Buick ("Buich") was a good Serb name!
Still, every time I tell this story someone says they recall an uncle who did just that!

I once had a priest who pointed out that Christmas doesn´t end until the Feast of the Epiphany on January 6th, so we´re not really "late" with gifts and cards until the 7th. His point was not about saving money, though, it was about not working ourselves into a frenzy trying to get everything done and forgetting the real reason for the season.

The ongoing saga of Edward Snowden has at least been moving in the right direction for President Obama. Snowden may once have tried to position himself as a whistleblower, but he has since devolved into ingratiating himself with authoritarian regimes by plying them with American national security secrets. While Pete is correct that the NSA story seems to be hurting voters’ opinion of Obama’s trustworthiness, Americans are by now realizing that they would be foolish to go the other extreme and place that trust in Snowden. CANCUN, Mexico — Mexican authorities have arrested a former university professor who was on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list in the resort city of Playa del Carmen. At least for now (although a statewide referendum may be pending), Arizona governor Jan Brewer, a Republican, has succeeded in her efforts to implement a key part of Obamacare in her state. Brewer has very aggressively — and entirely voluntarily — spearheaded the charge to implement Obamacare’s massive Medicaid expansion on her watch. She now claims, however, that she’s not really implementing Obamacare — or at least not any significant portion of it. In a recent interview reported by the Associated Press, Brewer said, “This business that this is Obamacare is a little bit interesting.”

Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.

It is understood that a contingency plan is in place for the unlikely event that an attempt would be made on the President’s life. The Secret Service also have diplomatic immunity which will allow them to shoot to kill a would-be assassin without fear of prosecution. As part of the “evacuation route” plan, they would be able to spirit the President by chopper to one of the carriers where a jet is on standby to take him back to the United States.
