Genetically modified ´Frankenfish´ set to

A salmon genetically modified to grow twice as fast as normal earning a nickname of ‘Frankenfish’ has been approved by federal health regulators making it the first scientifically engineered animal for human consumption. The Food and Drug Administration on Friday released its environmental assessment of the AquaAdvantage salmon, a faster-growing fish which has been subject to a contentious, yearslong debate at the agency. The document concludes that the fish ´will not have any significant impacts on the quality of the human environment of the United States.´

FTA: If the salmon are eventually approved for sale, consumers may not even know they are eating them. According to federal guidelines, the fish would not be labeled as genetically modified if the agency decides it has the same material makeup as conventional salmon. AquaBounty says that genetically modified salmon have the same flavor, texture, color and odor as the conventional fish, and the FDA so far has not shown any signs of disagreeing.

Some things make one wonder if, how, or when we are or will be human guinea pigs for testing.

They don´t know, we don´t know, nobody knows the eventual effects on humans. If we are unable to tell the difference, and/or the fish are accidentally or deliberately mislabeled or put in with regular salmon and they don´t stick with their own kind, what will happen. I certainly would not want my grandchildren receiving super-growth hormones. As it is we are pretty certain we have kept them away from hormone meat, but once the government is ´´persuaded´´ it´s okay, we will have to get a farm and raise our own.

A reasonable concern over the Franken plants is that Monsanto designed them to withstand unusually large amounts of Roundup - thus making chemical weeding a whole lot easier using (of course) Monsanto´s Roundup. Not sure however, if that means more of that Roundup ends up in crop and thus in the food chain.

This concern does not appear to apply to the salmon however. But I understand that Nick Saban is looking to apply the techniques to humans - or at least to start serving large quantities of the fish at the training table.

I don´t like salmon to begin with so won´t mean much to mean.

But, watch, someone will serve it at sushi bar and a patron will declare it´s the best and freshest he´s ever had.

This is the same government that has retracted the permit for mountaintop removal mining to remove the dirt and surface rock and move it to the valleys. They decry this as unnatural and destroying the existing eco-system.

I like the real stuff, the way God made it. We rarely have it cuz the real, good stuff is way pricey. Please folks, don´t eat that nasty-looking, pale pink, mushy fleshed garbage fish in most stores. Same with that awful tilapia.

#8 - This is about genetically modified species. Each of the debacles you listed was an invasive, non-native species that naturally occurred somewhere else in the world, and because a crisis because what nature uses to keep them in-check back home isn´t here to prevent them from runaway growth/reproduction.

People are poorly educated and do not understand that a GM salmon is just a fish. He has no way of transporting his changed gene to your genetic structure. The hormones that make him grow are present in the wild fish just like the gm fish.

Journalists and most people can be expected to understand precisely nothing in the science area, but people sure do voice their opinions.

Virtually nothing you eat, #10, is "the way God made it". Man has been "genetically" modifying the food he eats for millennia. The corn you eat, for example, when it was called maize, looked more like a head of wheat than the juicy, golden, sugar-filled ear you see today. And if you´re worried about cross species matings look up tangelo, pluot, or beefalo. I believe God gave man the intelligence and imagination to produce thousand of interesting variations on nature, including nearly every type of dog, flower, grain...
Genetic engineering of one form or another is what keeps us from starving, especially when less than 2% of the population is engaged in food production.

WE HAVE BEEN PURPOSELY MODIFYING OUR FOOD FOR 10,000 YEARS. Selective breeding has been going on since farming started.

As hunters and gatherers we have been modifying our food sources for over 200,000 years.

A pregnant journalist is recovering in hospital today after a pro-Kremlin political leader in Russia told two male aides to ´violently rape´ her at a press conference. Nationalist Vladimir Zhironovsky launched his extraordinary tirade after reporter Stella Dubovitskaya asked him an innocuous question about sanctions against Ukraine. The founder of the far right Liberal Democratic Party began shouting wildly, before suddenly manhandling two young male aides towards the pregnant mother-of-one. He then shouted to them: ´When I say, you run to her and violently rape her.´ The parliamentary reporter, who is six months pregnant, is now being treated in hospital

Immortalised in Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s poem about the “valley of death”, the Charge of the Light Brigade is remembered as one of the most glorious defeats in British history. The documents overturn much of the established wisdom of the battle and provide clues as to how the calamitous attack, during the Battle of Balaclava, in the Crimean War, came to be accidentally launched. [Snip] The charge saw the light cavalry mount an assault into a valley flanked, on three sides, by Russians. Lord Raglan, overall commander of the British forces, had intended to send the Light Brigade to pursue and

What stops the Earth from looking like Pluto is energy from the Sun. The quantity and type of energy coming from the Sun varies over cycles that range up to 1,500 years long. The cycle we can see with our own eyes, in our own lifetimes, is the sunspot cycle that is normally eleven years long. [Snip] It has become established—for those who are willing to look at the evidence—that climate will very closely follow our colder Sun. Climate is no longer a mystery to us. We can predict forward up to two solar cycles, that is about twenty-two years into the future. When models of solar activity are further refined, we may be able to predict climate

Of all the many absurdities of the great climate change non-crisis which has been pointlessly obsessing our planet this last three or four decades, surely the most egregious is this: global warming is good. No really, it is. As a few bold heretics--such as Australian geologist Ian Plimer in his book Heaven And Earth--have long been trying to tell anyone prepared to listen, the human species is designed for warmth not cold. Ice ages are something we should naturally fear; warming periods are something which for which we should yearn. All the historical evidence confirms this--that periods of warming

With her twinkling eyes and beaming smile, it is hard to believe Her Majesty will mark her 88th birthday tomorrow. This portrait of the Queen, taken by celebrated British photographer David Bailey CBE, was released today ahead of the occasion. It shows the monarch smiling at the camera - while donning a pearl necklace, earrings and a brooch. Her jewellery is accompanied by a simple dress by Angela Kelly, who has served as the Queen´s personal assistant and senior dresser since 2002. The black-and-white photograph was taken at Buckingham Palace in March and commissioned on behalf of the Government´s GREAT

At least six Birmingham schools accused of harbouring a Trojan horse plot run by Muslim fundamentalists will be placed under special measures by Ofsted. The action is understandable. The unsubtle attempts to insert Islamist ideas--representing an extremist, politicised form of Islam--into the curriculum of those schools makes for frightening reading. Equally unsettling was the liberal establishment’s failure to correct it. According to a special report by the Education Funding Agency, radical Muslims have tried to take control of teaching by first taking control of school governorships. Excellent head teachers were either reduced to the status of figureheads or forced out

For Hillary Clinton, having her own baby grandchild to kiss on the campaign trail, could be one of the biggest boosts to her possible presidential election campaign. Although the former Secretary of State and First Lady has not said if she will run in 2016, the arrival of her first grandchild will soften her image, analysts have said. While Chelsea only revealed her pregnancy on Thursday, supporters of her mother have already started cooing over a possible baby in the White House. With the Clintons having a near-royal status in the U.S., the announcement of a new arrival due this fall has sent

That was quite a victory dance President Obama did Thursday while claiming Obamacare is “working” because eight million people have now supposedly signed up for the health care program. He even indulged in some less-than-subtle mockery of Republicans - and by extension the majority of Americans who have disapproved of Obamacare since before it became law. "The repeal debate is and should be over,” Obama said, taking a dig at Republicans who are “going through, you know, the stages of grief … anger and denial and all that stuff …” But a president who is viewed by most Americans as less

In a speech earlier this week, Lisa O. Monaco’s full, prepared text is available here. Monaco began her remarks by eloquently describing the lives tragically lost last year during the Boston Marathon bombings. GREENSBORO, Ga. — Golf holes the size of pizzas. Soccer balls on the back nine. A mulligan on every hole. These are some of the measures — some would say gimmicks — that golf courses across the country have experimented with to stop people from quitting the game. Golf has always reveled in its standards and rich tradition. But increasingly a victim of its own image and hidebound ways, golf has lost five million players in the last decade, according to the National Golf Foundation, with 20 percent of the existing 25 million golfers apt to quit in the next few years. People under 35 have especially spurned the game, saying it takes too

Hi, everybody. For millions of Americans, this time of year holds great meaning. Earlier this week, we hosted a Passover Seder at the White House, and joined Jewish families around the world in their re-tellings of the story of the Exodus and the victory of faith over oppression. And this Sunday, Michelle, Malia, Sasha, and I will join our fellow Christians around the world in celebrating the Resurrection of Christ, the salvation he offered the world, and the hope that comes with the Easter season. These holy days have their roots in miracles that took place long ago. And yet, they still inspire us, guide us, and strengthen us today. They remind us of our

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Thursday that a family of dissident ranchers and their supporters in his home state of Nevada are ´domestic terrorists,´ citing this week´s standoff with the federal government´s Bureau of Land Management. Cliven Bundy has refused to pay grazing fees for land where his hundreds of cattle roam every day. The land is owned by the federal government, which says he owes more than $1 million. Bundy, however, insists that since his family has been using the land since the 1870s, Uncle Sam can´t collect the grazing fees. A tense standoff developed this week after
