The lost churches of Russia:
Haunting images of abandoned

Crumbling and abandoned, the last remnants of Russia´s wooden churches lay dotted in the woodlands of the country´s north-western corner. Forgotten by many and in the process of being reclaimed by nature, the few remaining churches are exposed to the harsh elements without any hope of being salvaged. But one photographer is determined to capture pictures of the forgotten structures - with sometimes haunting results. Richard Davies spent nine years tracking down the lost churches, and produced a book with the stunning photographs.

Beautiful crafsmanship. One poster following the article noted the lack of graffiti on the abandoned buildings.
Thanks for posting.

The same thing is happening throughout the west. Churches are being abandoned as secular socialism/marxism gains strength. How many young people attend church on a regular basis as opposed to a generation ago?

As go a country´s churches, so goes its soul. Beware, America.

Russia is also facing a plummeting population -- also a warning for the US, but a slightly different one.

Communist nations ban the churches. In nations like ours, the churches are attacked by Progressives in hopes that one day they´ll have the political power to ban them.

They replaced their religion with the government.

It´s happening here in the USA.

Churches are also being replaced by secular edifices that mimic churches: casinos, movie theaters, shopping malls, all with a focus on a false idol (money, celebrities, consumerism), with specific rituals, sounds, and smells (example: the clinking of slot machines, the smell of popcorn), and a promise to make you happy. How often do you hear that someone could spend a couple of hours in a mall or a casino, but can´t spend 45 minutes at Mass on Sunday?

"The photographer´s adventure began after he learned of artist Ivan Yakovlevich Bilibin, his website says."

So Bilibin, in addition to being a brilliant artist, was also a photographer? Did I read that right? I am in awe.

For buildings that have been neglected for decades, those churches actually seem to be standing up pretty well. I wonder if it´s the cold.

Soon to be converted and occupied by Muslims.

Yes, beautiful and sad at the same time. And to think they are all made from wood. Some very talented people built some lovely buildings. I am glad this man took the time to document these building so they will not be forgotten.

It´s not clear to me when some of these churches were built. Some are pics from 1902, and others were built after that?

Probably thanks to these churches being out in more rural areas, they have survived in this form, which is remarkably good.

Many historic churches in less remote areas were totally destroyed by the Bolsheviks.

Will check Davies´ website and look for the book.

One of the most fascinating, wonderful and enigmatic cultures was suffocated and crushed by the communist revolutionaries. Russian culture has never revived.

On the heels of news that the Obama administration Department of Justice was spying on reporters at the Associated Press, Monday brought the startling disclosure by the Washington Post that the DOJ had also targeted Fox reporter James Rosen for surveillance in an effort to plug up leaks. Additionally, the New Yorker’s Ryan Lizza obtained the full application for a search warrant of Rosen’s personal email account, in which the DOJ accused him of being “an aider and abettor and/or co-conspirator.” As Lizza put it, “Rosen was not charged with any crime, but it is unprecedented for the government,

WASHINGTON— The man who led the Internal Revenue Service when it was giving extra scrutiny to tea party and other conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status told Congress on Tuesday that he knew little about what was happening while he was still commissioner. Douglas Shulman, who vacated his position last November when his five-year term expired, told the Senate Finance Committee he didn´t learn all the facts until he read last week´s report by a Treasury inspector general confirming the targeting strategy. In his first public remarks since the story broke, Shulman said: "I agree this is

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) demanded information about conservative groups’ college-aged interns, prompting outrage from one of the country’s top conservative activist organizations and leading one former intern to wonder whether his family’s pizza parlor would be endangered. The IRS requested, in an audit, the names of the conservative Leadership Institute’s 2008 interns, as well as specific information about their internship work and where the interns were employed in 2012, according to a document request the IRS sent to the Leadership Institute, dated February 14, 2012. The IRS requested: “Copies of applications for internships and summer programs; to include:

"I frankly think the committee should apologize to Apple," Paul said during a hearing of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. Paul said he was offended by the "tone and tenor of the hearing." "I´m offended by the spectacle of dragging in executives from an American company that is not doing anything illegal," Paul said. The outgoing acting commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service and his predecessor denied Tuesday that they misled Congress about the targeting of conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status, telling a Senate panel that they were not aware of the practice when it started. Appearing before the Senate Finance Committee, Steven T. Miller, the acting commissioner who submitted his resignation under pressure last week, and Douglas Shulman, a George W. Bush appointee who headed the IRS from March 2008 to November 2012, also rejected the idea that political partisanship played a role in singling out conservative nonprofits for heightened scrutiny.

The pope and the devil:

VATICAN CITY — Is Pope Francis an exorcist? The question has been swirling ever since Francis laid his hands Sunday on the head of a young man after celebrating Mass in St. Peter’s Square. The young man heaved deeply a half-dozen times, shook, and he then slumped in his wheelchair as Francis prayed over him. The television station of the Italian bishops’conference said it had surveyed exorcists, who agreed there was “no doubt” that Francis either performed an exorcism or a prayer to free the man from the devil. The Vatican was more cautious Tuesday. In a statement,

Things could hardly have broken better for Republicans these last few weeks -- a trio of scandals, all combining to embarrass the Obama administration at the same time. But now, a growing number of Republicans are worried their party will screw it up. For every cry of "impeachment," there´s a louder cry from the GOP establishment not to get too far ahead of themselves, at least not yet. Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus says he´s not worried about a "political strategy," instead he´s "concerned with" the same thing "the American people are concerned with," which is "just getting to

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Serviced scandal today spread further within the White House and closer to President Obama. White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. But he insisted McDonough and the other White House officials purposely kept Obama out of the loop.McDonough “rightly chose not to take action” to inform Obama, Carney told reporters at the daily White House briefing.

The Washington Post on Monday reported that Obama’s Department of Justice was investigating journalists before they started wiretapping the Associated Press – for one, Fox News correspondent James Rosen in 2010. Their headline wasn´t "Obama Team Also Spied on Fox News." Fox wasn´t in the headline, on A-1 or on A-12, where the story continued. Newly obtained court documents “reveal how deeply investigators explored the private communications of a working journalist — and raise the question of how often journalists have been investigated as closely as Rosen was in 2010.” Reporter Ann Marimow began:

A senior adviser to President Obama mounted a combative defense of the administration on Sunday, saying the controversies enveloping the White House were the result of Republican lawmakers’ trying to “drag Washington into a swamp of partisan fishing expeditions, trumped-up hearings and false allegations.”The remarks came from Dan Pfeiffer, a member of the president’s inner circle, as he appeared on all five major Sunday morning talk shows in an effort to move the administration past what commentators have described as a “hell week” of controversy and missteps.

Stuart Varney said this morning on "Varney & Co." that one of his producers was given a questionnaire with some surprisingly intrusive questions on it when he switched doctors. One of the questions was whether he/she was concerned about unsecured weapons in the home. Another asked whether he/she was "in a relationship in which you have been physically hurt or are you afraid of your partner?"
