| FORT SUMTER NATIONAL MONUMENT, S.C.— They are there just where they landed in Fort Sumter a century and a half ago — three Union shells from rifled Parrot guns embedded in the masonry wall of the garrison where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. Because removing the shells would damage the fragile walls of the aging fort in Charleston Harbor, they have been preserved in place by scientists from the nearby Clemson University Restoration Institute. The project not only helps preserve the shells and the wall, but allows visitors to better imagine what it might have

I am confused... The Union had taken over Sumpter and the Confederates were attacking them to get them out. How did Union shells end up in the walls of Sumpter? Were these Confederate shells or they were referring to the walls of Moultrie or perhaps The Citadel?

Tragic misspelling aside, #1 makes a good point. Confederates were trying to forcibly evict the Union troops from the island fort. It would be geometrically problematic for artillery leave shells in the outside of the fort´s walls that were shot by defenders in the fort.

On April 7, 1863, the Union began a siege of Charleston, and as things went along they attacked Fort Sumter which had remained in Confederate hands. It was not recaptured by the north until 1865.

Were these missles found on the landward side or the seaward side of the fort? Seaward side likely later Federal navy ; landward side likely earlier Confederate army. God forbid that the half-wit AP would divulge the facts.

I´m also been wondering about the fact that these are "shells". This means they have a "bursting charge" inside that has not gone off. Just because these things are 150 years old doesn´t mean that they´re inert now.

DAMASCUS, Va - At least 50 people were injured Saturday after a car struck a crowd of hikers in the Appalachian Trail Days parade in Damascus. SAN JOSE— For most Americans in the United States, Armed Forces Day is not on the lists of likely holidays to honor the country’s military in celebrations of Memorial Day or Veteran’s Day. Sadly, most Americans may not even realize that Armed Forces Day is even a legitimate holiday. Armed Forces Day was established to be celebrated on the third Saturday in May. Dorothy, the 14-year-old peregrine falcon that since 2002 has nested on a 40th-floor ledge of the Cathedral of Learning in Oakland, was perched on the limestone railing next to that nest and her lone chick shortly before 9 a.m. Friday. She´d just fed the 22-day-old chick a small bird for breakfast. "Baltimore oriole ... again," said Kate St. John, who blogs about the city´s peregrines. Someone else watching from the office inside the window next to the nest said it looked like Dorothy was calmly "chilling." Ms. St. John´s response was that nothing could be further from the truth.

WASHINGTON — An Internal Revenue Service watchdog testified Friday that he told Obama administration officials in June that he was looking into allegations the IRS targeted conservative groups for extra scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status. The revelation by Inspector General Russell George came at the first congressional hearing on the IRS misconduct, which has generated a political firestorm since it was disclosed a week ago. George’s testimony represented the first evidence that officials in the Obama administration knew of the allegations as long as a year ago, during the presidential campaign.

"We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate." The lawmaker leading the charge to investigate the Benghazi terror attack on Friday subpoenaed the co-author of a report that slammed the State Department but didn´t interview Hillary Clinton. House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) formally demanded that retired ambassador Thomas Pickering submit to being deposed by the committee next Thursday. The subpoena comes in the wake of a series of acrimonious public exchanges this week between the two men.
