| BLERANCOURT, France — For Patrick Laplace, the mayor of this trim little town, the Socialist government’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage in France is a colossal mistake. Laplace has not taken his stand for political reasons. He belongs to the Radical Party, a loyal ally of the majority Socialist Party in Parliament. Nor has he decided for religious reasons. Laplace has faith in God but puts no stock in the organized church. His opposition, he said, arises from a rational analysis defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman for family and filiation.

A day after insurers complained that Kathleen Sebelius and the Obama administration had pressured them to fund Enroll America, a House committee sent them a request for more information on the matter. The Energy and Commerce Committee had already begun looking into whether Sebelius had broken any laws by attempting to get donations from an industry that will be heavily regulated by her under ObamaCare, and now The Hill reports this new request as a widening of that probe (via Rare): House Republicans have widened their probe of Health and Human Services

President Obama delivered an address today at the National Defense University called “The Future of our Fight Against Terrorism.” Actually, part of the speech was about the past, including much self-congratulation and some shots at President Bush. This part of the speech is revisionist rubbish. As Max Boot explains: Obama said, for example, that after he came into office, “we unequivocally banned torture, affirmed our commitment to civilian courts, worked to align our policies with the rule of law, and expanded our consultations with Congress.” Umm, actually all of that happened in Bush’s second term.

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. -- The Interstate 5 bridge over the Skagit River collapsed Thursday evening, injuring an unknown number of people. Both the northbound and southbound portions of the bridge dropped into the river sometime before 7 p.m., according to Washington State Patrol trooper Mark Francis. Francis said several cars were on the bridge when it collapsed, and some are now in the water. Bart Treece with the Washington State Department of Transportation was unsure when the bridge was last inspected. "All of our bridges in the area are pretty old," he said.
