| The National Rifle Association stood its ground today in arguing that the answer to gun violence in schools is an armed security force that can protect students, while blaming the media and violent entertainment and video games for recent deadly shootings. "The only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre said in presenting the NRA´s first comments about the Connecticut school shooting since it occurred a week ago today. LaPierre offered no olive branch to gun-control advocates who have called for tougher laws

With stupid announcements like this, the NRA deserves whatever changes the liberals pass. The NRA had a chance to make some thoughtful suggestions, but chose not to do so.
Does the NRA then also plan to arm all hospitals, stores, sporting events, individual homes where people are throwing a party, etc.? Are they upset that 20 children were killed, or merely upset that they were killed inside a school building? After all, they could have been shot at a soccer game or a birthday party; the NRA ´solution´ ignores these options.
The point isn´t where the shooting took place; the point is that a mentally unbalanced person got hold of guns and killed a bunch of people. When the NRA chooses to address that fact, I´ll listen. I´m not holding my breath.

I think Mark Levin should give a press conference on this. He would explain to the liberal dunces that we have a Bill of Rights, not a Bill of Needs, and then tell them to stop attacking our liberties.

#3, I totally disagree. Mr. LaPierre´s remarks were reasonable and appropriate, as opposed to the hysterical rants of those who believe that law-abiding, rational people should not be entrusted to own guns.

#3: hospitals and sporting events typically do have an armed presence.
I think it´s clear the NRA is saying that the children were made defenseless by gun laws. Which is relevant to the discussion. Just because the control community doesn´t want to have a discussion doesn´t mean that discussion doesn´t need to be had.
Talking about a mentally ill man killing his mother and stealing her guns doesn´t get us any further down the road to stopping the violence. It does open a discussion about the lack of options families of the mentally ill have when trying to care for them.

Let me just add that, for me, this isn´t about politics and this isn´t theoretical. This is about safety. This is personal. I have been in the situation of talking down a delusional person who had voices in his head telling him to get a gun. People with serious mental illness are living in your neighborhood right now. You and your family are depending on my success, and the success of others like me, to catch these delusional episodes and walk the tightrope the law creates to get these folks into treatment before they can carry out the delusions in their heads.
Now, you can choose to make our jobs harder, or you can choose to make our jobs easier. This has absolutely nothing to do with your rights to guns. But do stop and think: do you want the next delusional person who hears voices saying, "Get a gun!" to be successful...or do you want to make the process of getting a gun much harder for him, thereby protecting your neighbors and your family? That is the issue. The NRA completely missed the boat on this one.

I agree with the NRA. Their issue is to protect the right to own a gun. You want better mental health laws, go after the ACLU...it is that group that keeps these crazies on the street. I think you are the one who missed the boat on this one #7.

Any laws passed will make it harder for the law abiding to acquire guns, not the crazies. If the Principal had been armed and trained she and many students would still be alive. Would the perp have even tried?

So, No. 3 I take it that despite the fact that there are presently more than 22,000 gun laws in America, none of which stopped this tragedy yo think that a ONE MORE will do so.
Passing anything affecting the tools the criminal used will have zero effect. You have to affect the person committing the act, not the tool that he STEALS with which to do it.
So NOTHING will change. But you will FEEL better.
That ought to help the kids.

I saw this on cspan last night when the mikes would permit. A bunch of gun haters were sprinkled through the audience and began screeching and hollering against Wayne. I have no idea why they did not have police come and arrest them. Actually, I am thinking of some worse stuff that should have been done to them.

ABC news giving publicity to mentally ill people seems to be a major part of the problem.
And I don´t just mean Adam Lanza.
I went to the site to find out the substance of the NRA´s statement, and the entire video was of the CodePink protester. Mental illness on display again!
Way to go, ABC. You´ve shown your colors.

It´s not helpful, imo, to only address one aspect of this. Curbing gun rights and nothing else won´t come close to solving this. Lunatics need to be involuntarily committed. They are a danger to the rest of us! Hollywood needs to change and the glorification of violence in general needs to change. The media are also a big player here -
When all of these are placed on the table THEN it will be resonable to talk about gun control.

There are a lot of mentally ill people out there, but only a fraction of them are dangerous to themselves or others. In this country mentally ill people can vote and most of them vote for the liberal Democrats because of their support for expansive social programs and causes. The liberal Democrats know all that and that is why you will never hear a liberal Democrat politician directly blame a mentally ill person for any crime that he or she commits, no matter how heinous. The liberal Democrats consider the mentally ill to have a disability, and that they are in need of help, that of course only liberal Democrat governance can give them. That´s why the liberal Democrats will always cast off the blame on a gun, on the Republicans, or on the NRA anytime a mentally ill person commits mass murder.

#3, a lot of that is covered by concealed carry.
You know, the law that in Oregon stopped the mall shooter from killing many more people than he did. A guy with concealed carry stopped him. But the media doesn´t want you to know that.

I wonder what the drunk driving limit was for the Cowboy that had a DUI manslaughter and was driving without a license also which is illegal. Doesn´t this prove that lowering the limit doesn´t do that much good in the real world but MADD keeps pushing for lower limits?
Why did they have to set up an uninsured motorists fund unless there were tons of people driving without insurance? The point is there´s people who just don´t give a damn about laws.Getting rid of the death penalty in a lot of places was a bad idea also.

Just when I think I am going to sit these threads out... I understand #3´s frequent posts. I really do. I also agree that the mentally ill should not have guns. The problem is, what do we do when they do get them? The only realistic answer is to respond with guns of our own. The NRA´s answer makes more sense than anything I have seen yet. My small backwoods community is loaded with retired and ex military and police, as well as concealed carry permit holders. I bet if the schools asked, they would get plenty of volunteers to hang around and chat with the lunch ladies and secretaries for a few hours a week. I would certainly be willing to volunteer. The first thing they should do is take down those stupid gun free zone signs.

i just saw where the 49er´s kicker got a death threat on twitter. That´s how bad its getting with these nuts.If they want to crack down on something,it should be death threats on the internet.

No number of guns in the hands of individuals will cure the hatred in the human heart that impels us to violence against one another. And no combination of laws and ´reeducation´ will succeed at that, either.
Only God has the power to transform our hearts like that, and only divine mercy can save us from ourselves and each other.
Any strategy that doesn´t begin with prayer and heavily emphasize prayer throughout the process is doomed to fail.

#3, WE don´t deserve ´whatever´ liberals may pass. NY state being the liberal kingdom it is will DO something. The problem is all they will DO is harass legal gun owners in this state. They won´t do anything to go after the criminals and insane criminals in this state, that´s harder to do. If you knew what a citizen has to do to own a handgun in this state, it would address every concern you have about insane people arming up, and then some. The problem with wishing for some ´action´ to control high capacity, semi, whatever, firearms is NY´s gun death record vs Vermont´s which takes the opposite approach to gun ´control.´ Also, legal, concealed carry permit holders in NY do not commit crime. The numbers are statistically irrelevant.

President Barack Obama followed in the footsteps of past U.S. leaders with a speech Wednesday at Berlin´s iconic Brandenburg Gate, where he said he would ask Russia to join the United States in slashing its supply of strategic nuclear warheads. "I intend to seek negotiated cuts with Russia to move beyond Cold War nuclear postures," Obama said in the city that symbolized the East-West divide in the decades after World War II. Repeating his campaign themes of equal opportunity and freedom for all, Obama said such ideals can provide the prosperity sought by all nations -- especially longtime allies

SANFORD, Fla.--The family of slain Florida teen Trayvon Martin has "every confidence" that a jury will convict George Zimmerman, the former neighborhood watch captain accused in his shooting death, a family attorney said. Martin´s family, including his mother Sybrina Fulton and father Tracy Martin, have attended jury selection proceedings in the Seminole County criminal courthouse since they launched more than a week ago. Attorneys in the case have been whittling down a pool of potential jurors, questioning them on their exposure to news reports in the high-profile case.

The Airbus next-generation A350 plane took off commercially at the Paris Air Show on Wednesday, winning multi-billion-dollar deals and the European manufacturer said that more deals were in the air. The news comes just days after the new plane took to the skies in its first ever test flight on Friday, stealing the limelight before the start of the air show -- a key event where Airbus and Boeing compete fiercely for plane orders. The two rivals are currently head-to-head -- $44.6 billion in new plane orders or agreements for Airbus versus $44.8 billion for Boeing -- after Ryanair

Listening to Barack Obama give his speech in Belfast on Monday, it was hard not to stifle a yawn. I kept waiting for the part when he would say something interesting, but, about three quarters of the way through, realised it wasn’t going to come. Judging from television pictures some of his young audience felt the same, after the initial rush of euphoria of receiving the rock star president in their midst had passed. This is not surprising, for we had already heard this number about the inspirational role of the Northern Ireland peace process and the Emerald Isle’s

Women will have the chance to join the Navy SEALS, Army Rangers and other specialized combat outfits beginning in 2016 under plans approved Tuesday by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel. Female candidates will also be able to join front-line Army and Marine Corps infantry units as part of the department’s decision. “The days of the ‘Rambo’ are over,” Maj. Gen. Bennet Sacolick, head of force development for Special Operations Command, said Tuesday during a briefing announcing the changes. Tuesday’s announcement builds on former Pentagon chief Leon Panetta’s decision in January to end the military’s long-standing ban

Michael Hastings, a contributor to Rolling Stone and BuzzFeed, died on Tuesday morning in a car crash in Los Angeles at the unforgivably young age of 33.He is best known, rightly, for his 2010 Rolling Stone profile of Gen. Stanley McChrystal, who as commander of the U.S.-led force in Afghanistan was the face of the war that Hastings saw as misguided and poorly managed. His profile, “The Runaway General,” portrayed McChrystal as a loose cannon so sure of himself and his strategy for the war that he and his staff openly derided their civilian overseers,

A group of whistleblowers, including a number of aviation experts, have come forward in a new documentary to claim that the official explanation for the crash of TWA Flight 800 was wrong and a gas tank explosion did not bring down the flight off the coast of Long Island 17 years ago. However, the six whistleblowers, all part of the original investigation team, stopped short of saying the plane was shot down. Flight 800, a Boeing 747, had just taken off from JFK airport with 230 people aboard on July 17, 1996 enroute to Paris when it exploded

Amid a steady rise of backlash, Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old former National Security Agency contractor who was the source of a spring of leaks about the agency´s surveillance methods, conducted a live chat on The Guardian´s website Monday morning. Judging from some of the pointed questions he´s been asked and the reaction to newly leaked revelations over the past few days, it´s clear that much of the sympathy and support Snowden had built up for his early exposures is eroding. Many Americans supported his decision to leak information about a pair of National Security Agency surveillance programs, which, he detailed, gathered information

An attorney whose firm represents two Benghazi whistleblowers said Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, lied to the Senate when he said there was never a “stand down” order during the Benghazi attack on Sept. 11, 2012. “What was fascinating is that he explained his lie to them,” Joe DiGenova, an attorney representing one of the whistleblowers, told CNSNews.com. “He actually said they were sent to Tripoli. They were needed in Benghazi,” said DiGenova, a former U.S. attorney, now with the Washington firm of DiGenova & Toensing.

Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.

Marco Rubio. Paul Ryan. The IRS. Illegal immigration. And fraud to the tune of billions.. Now there’s a combustible mix. Let’s start with the IRS, illegal immigration and fraud. We’ll come back in a minute to Senator Rubio and Congressman Ryan. For those who came in late, a year before the IRS scandals burst onto the scene in early May of 2013, an alert investigative reporter for WTHR-Indianapolis (Channel 13), Bob Segall by name, produced a stunning piece of journalism. Segall’s video report is found here and we will quote from his story for the basics.
