Newtown´s firearms tradition
clashes with gun-control push

NEWTOWN, Conn. — When the wind blows a certain way across the tree-topped hills, Gary Bennett can stand in his yard and hear echoes of gunfire from his hunting club five miles away. The sound comforts him. "It´s a huge tradition here," said Bennett, a retired electrician and former president of the club, which helped defeat a proposal to tighten Newtown´s gun ordinances in September. (Snip)a surprising local undercurrent has emerged: Many gun owners here say the slaughter has sharpened their view that guns alone aren´t the problem.

Comments:
They´d like to see more gun clubs, training people in gun safety.

Just prior to Mr. Rosen finding the little ones sitting on his lawn he said he had heard the popping sounds and assumed it was people hunting in the woods.

We spend time in a rural/suburban area similar to Newtown and hear the hunters every day of hunting season.

Hope the exploitation of this murderous rampage brings a backlash to the gun grabbers.

The big lie by the gun control advocates is that defense of the Second Ammendment means being against any restrictions on ownership of firearms. In fact, there are already many restrictions on the books. Machine guns are one example. There are many, many more.

The truth is that the political left wants ALL guns banned. They just pursue that goal incrementally by adding seemingly reasonable restrictions, one at a time.

Any death is tragic, but the truth is that guns are involved in far fewer deaths than most other causes in our society.

Gun control has become an ideological, emotional cause for the left, absent any logic or reason...Why should it be so difficult for a mother to get a child committed when she is aware that he is mentally unbalanced? Why not take the benefit of doubt and have him evaluated by the mental health professionals, instead of a judge? The child could be released if found to be competent. But no, the left would rather have many die before taking such steps. Besdies, a massacre helps their cause!

When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. What part of that don´t the "gun control advocates" understand?

Gun control advocates want to believe that all people obey all laws. As a friend of mine said to me several years ago, "the kind of people who do this won´t be stopped by a law."

Anyone notice that in most cases I aware of, when a marauding perp is confronted by any armed resistance the killing in most cases is stopped and in many cases the perp(s) commit suicide.

The NRA´s solution is based on that reality.

Gen. John Allen has been appointed special U.S. envoy on security issues in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. He will not mediate between the parties; his work will almost exclusively involve contacts with Israel. Allen will deal with the U.S. position on Israeli security needs and the security arrangements that would accompany the establishment of a future Palestinian state. Senior U.S. and Israeli officials note that while U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel made the appointment it was coordinated with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who is leading the effort to restart Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

President Obama on Thursday nominated Victoria Nuland, a State Department official involved in the editing of the administration´s talking points on Benghazi, to be the next assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs. Nuland, a career foreign service officer who was until recently State´s top spokesperson, had long been expected to be nominated the post to replace Philip Gordon, who Obama picked to serve as Middle East coordinator for the National Security Council. Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election. Levin said, “I don’t believe for two seconds that Obama wasn’t aware of this.”

Anthony Weiner’s New York mayoral candidacy was only made more improbable today after he revealed that he visited a Houston psychiatric facility following his resignation from Congress in 2011. Haunted by scandal surrounding his sexually explicit online communications with women, the Democratic former congressman sought treatment for his compulsive behavior from mental health professionals at the Gabbard Center. According to its website, the facility provides “3-day outpatient psychiatric evaluation,” particularly to “professionals who are in personal or professional crises.” While Weiner did not disclose
