NEW YORK--When it comes to fat holiday discounts, better late than never.[Snip]But during the final weekend before Christmas, shoppers should expect to see more “70 percent off” and “buy one, get one free” signs as stores try to salvage a season that so far has been disappointing. Teen retailer Aeropostale has slashed prices on everything in its stores by 60 percent. Rival teen chain American Eagle Outfitters is offering 40 percent off all purchases. Saks Fifth Avenue is cutting prices on some designer clothing up to 60 percent, and Children’s Place, a children’s clothing chain, is offering up

With all sensible people buying huns and ammo there´s mot much left over for overpriced, overhyped junk.

Too bad the election is over. If Obama was still campaigning I´m sure retailers would be enjoying the best Christmas sales ever.

Will any of these retailers have a Christmas Come To Jesus moment and realize that cheap Chinese tat is cheap Chinese tat whether it´s sold off a cart on the streets of Beijing or off American shelves?

Quality of material and construction has become so abysmal that shopping for style has taken a back seat to locating something that doesn´t resemble a burlap sack.

In October, the AP and its ilk were wondering if Romney would get credit for the Obama recovery. Consumer confidence allegedly soaring, unemployment falling, housing bubbling was the joyous theme. "Happy Days are Here Again" was being sung by every AP reporter. Now that Obama has won, the AP reports:

"Many shoppers have been weighed down by concerns about their financial future. Some have concerns about the weak U.S. job market."

#5, those sum up my thoughts as well. Before the election, the AP (and other media sources) were telling us that the Holiday shopping season was looking pretty strong. Now they tell us that retailers are desperate to salvage something out of the season.

Poster #3, actually I was going to ask where I could buy some Huns. Sure could use a couple of them nowadays.
Merry Christmas.

Christas sales are lackluster. Watch for the Media to blame Republicans and the fiscal cliff.

Macy´s has had at least 30% discounts across the board on many items. Now they have added additional discounts - 20%, 15% - on top of the already discounted sale prices.

I called our local Macy´s to see if they had a robe that I´d seen in their ad. I´d bought the last one in a color a couple of days earlier at a discount below the sale price and wanted four more.

Although the inventory showed 31, there was only one on the rack in my color. The clerk scoured some storage area and found the others. All will sell for below half-price.

We went to buy a little Christmas tree yesterday. A place that is the local go-to place for trees was full of trees, but no one in the place except the staff. The parking lot is usually full and the place bustling about now. The tree was marked down considerably and we got it for less than that. The poinsettias were all on sale.

We don´t have much in the way of shopping around here unless you go to WalMart. I´ve noticed in the grocery stores they have only bought Christmas trees one time and the one store is down to 4 pathetic trees. Also they are usually full of whole nuts by the pound and bagged, but this year they only have bagged and not much variety, plus the stock is dwindling with no hope of restocking. WalMart does have bulk nuts but even they have not restocked. Too bad for my parrots, I usually buy lots of whole nuts after Christmas for half price.

It´s worth noting that since Thanksgiving was a bit earlier than usual this year, retailers were expecting a better season just based on that (more time to shop = more spending). However, it now looks like any boost from the quirks of the calendar will be dwarfed from the drop off in sales due to Obamanomics.

How many years in a row have we seen stories such as this? Even when the economy was going well (under the EEEVIL G.W.Bush), they whined that sales didn´t meet expectations.

Perhaps they need to refine their method of creating their own expectations.

Reply 14 - Posted by: rmsimms, 12/20/2012 9:51:47 AM     (No. 9075987)

They cannibalized their Christmas sales with their T-giving specials.

I´m waiting until after Christmas when the retailers get really desperate.

When John F. Kennedy delivered his “Ich Bin Ein Berliner” speech in front of the Brandenburg Gate on June 26, 1963, 450,000 people flocked to hear him. Fifty years later a far more subdued invitation-only crowd of 4,500 showed up to hear Barack Obama speak at the same location in Berlin. [Snip] JFK had a clear message when he came to Berlin a half century ago – the free world must stand up to Communist tyranny. 24 years later, President Reagan stood in the same spot famously calling on the Soviets to “tear down this wall.” Reagan’s speech was a

Barack Obama’s attempts to negotiate a peace deal with the Taliban look to be dead in the water before they have even started. [Snip] One moment Mr Karzai is being hailed as the saviour of the West, the only Afghan leader who can be trusted to take the fight to the Taliban. The next he is being denounced as a corrupt and weak politician who is only interested in his own self-advancement. On this occasion, however, Mr Karzai’s temper tantrum, and suspension of talks with the US within hours of Obama’s announcement, appears to be fully justified.

Wind farms are like one of those frustratingly unripened boils: you know that you shouldn´t keep squeezing but they´re so noxious and irritating and hideous that you just can´t resist. If you´ve got the same problem, then I heartily recommend you read this brilliant essay on the subject by Russell Taylor. I love his dismissal of people who claim to find wind turbines beautiful: "…a sentiment I find as credible as a Soviet peasant admiring the Tiger tank that had just squashed his grandmother." But what really grabbed me was his analysis at the end of wind turbines´ totemic

A vast tract of the East Coast, from Washington DC to New York is in danger of being without power for up to two years, if a massive solar flare knocks out the power grid. With the Sun pushing out unusually large solar flares, capable of disrupting power supplies, a device is being proposed that would prevent more than 300 million Americans being left without power. House Republicans have proposed legislation to push the Government to provide surge protectors and grid-saving devices that would offer protection in case of a massive electromagnetic pulse from either a flare or nuclear weapon.

Michelle Obama and her daughters were joined by the President´s half-sister Auma on Tuesday as the group made a sombre tour of the Holocaust memorial in Berlin. The First Lady, Malia, 14, and Sasha, 11, bowed their heads and listened carefully to the words of a tour guide. Michelle looked lost in thought as she wandered through the vast site while Malia appeared deeply moved and reached out to touch the stones. Afghanistan suspends talks

Afghanistan has suspended talks with the US to discuss the nature of US military presence after foreign troops withdraw in 2014. A spokesman for President Hamid Karzai said the decision was taken over "contradictions" in the US proposal of direct talks with the Taliban. Mr Karzai also ruled out talking to the Taliban until the peace process was "Afghan-led". Earlier, four US soldiers died in a Taliban attack at an Afghan air base. A spokesman for the Taliban said the militants had launched two rockets at Bagram airbase, the largest military base for US troops in Afghanistan.

A group of whistleblowers, including a number of aviation experts, have come forward in a new documentary to claim that the official explanation for the crash of TWA Flight 800 was wrong and a gas tank explosion did not bring down the flight off the coast of Long Island 17 years ago. However, the six whistleblowers, all part of the original investigation team, stopped short of saying the plane was shot down. Flight 800, a Boeing 747, had just taken off from JFK airport with 230 people aboard on July 17, 1996 enroute to Paris when it exploded

An attorney whose firm represents two Benghazi whistleblowers said Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, lied to the Senate when he said there was never a “stand down” order during the Benghazi attack on Sept. 11, 2012. “What was fascinating is that he explained his lie to them,” Joe DiGenova, an attorney representing one of the whistleblowers, told CNSNews.com. “He actually said they were sent to Tripoli. They were needed in Benghazi,” said DiGenova, a former U.S. attorney, now with the Washington firm of DiGenova & Toensing.

Likening religious schools to segregation--a racist system that forced blacks to attend different schools and use different facilities than whites in the American South--President Barack Obama told a town hall meeting for youth in Belfast, Northern Ireland on Monday that there should not be Catholic and Protestant schools because such schools cause division. "Because issues like segregated schools and housing, lack of jobs and opportunity--symbols of history that are a source of pride for some and pain for others--these are not tangential to peace; they’re essential to it,"

Listening to Barack Obama give his speech in Belfast on Monday, it was hard not to stifle a yawn. I kept waiting for the part when he would say something interesting, but, about three quarters of the way through, realised it wasn’t going to come. Judging from television pictures some of his young audience felt the same, after the initial rush of euphoria of receiving the rock star president in their midst had passed. This is not surprising, for we had already heard this number about the inspirational role of the Northern Ireland peace process and the Emerald Isle’s

The May 17 deposition where she made the alleged admissions is part of a $1.2 million lawsuit brought by Lisa Jackson, the former manager of a Savannah, Georgia, restaurant run by Deen and her brother Bubba Hiers. Jackson alleges in the suit that Deen used the N-word at the restaurant and that Hiers sexually harassed her. According to the reports, in the deposition, Deen replied “Yes, of course,”

Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.

Marco Rubio. Paul Ryan. The IRS. Illegal immigration. And fraud to the tune of billions.. Now there’s a combustible mix. Let’s start with the IRS, illegal immigration and fraud. We’ll come back in a minute to Senator Rubio and Congressman Ryan. For those who came in late, a year before the IRS scandals burst onto the scene in early May of 2013, an alert investigative reporter for WTHR-Indianapolis (Channel 13), Bob Segall by name, produced a stunning piece of journalism. Segall’s video report is found here and we will quote from his story for the basics.
