Russia is enduring its harshest winter in over 70 years, with temperatures plunging as low as -50 degrees Celsius. Dozens of people have already died, and almost 150 have been hospitalized. The country has not witnessed such a long cold spell since 1938, meteorologists said, with temperatures 10 to 15 degrees lower than the seasonal norm all over Russia. Across the country, 45 people have died due to the cold, and 266 have been taken to hospitals. In total, 542 people were injured due to the freezing temperatures,

Those belching smokestacks in the pictures are the only reason more Russians haven´t died.

There´s been a stationary and very strong (nearly 1060 hectopascals) high pressure system over the north of Russia this past week. When this type of system prevails, it direct winds clockwise down from the Arctic over Siberia and then westwards towards western Russia and eastern Europe in general.

When winds travel over land masses in winter, they become colder, not warmer, as land is cold - in fact, colder than water -during this season. In summer, the reverse occurs - ie land is warmer than water. Therefore, the same pressure system that is now bringing very cold weather to Russia would bring very hot weather if it occurred in summer.

Al Gore to secretary/masseuse: Do I have any speaking engagements in Russia?

Secretary/masseuse: Why yes, you have a global war...

Al Gore: Cancel them all!

To give the Russians credit, their scientists have been predicting a mini-ice-age for some time now. Something to do with the orbit of the Earth I think.

The emails from the corrupt CRU controlled by Phil Jones and corrupt Penn State´s Michael Mann were first posted on a Russian server in the Russian Far East.
One way they fudged the numbers for Gore´s fraudulent global warming was by not including many areas in Russia.
Soviet science was corrupted by Lysenko and they paid for it dearly with his bogus beliefs- some with their lives.
Prayers for the Russian people.

Coldest temp I´ve ever experienced was -20F with a -50F wind chill in Omaha, NE. Toasty warm in my Air Force issue cold weather parka.

Coldest I´ve ever been was water survival in Pensacola, FL on a sunny 60 degree day in December. I could NOT get warm after climbing out of P´cola Bay. Survival instructor didn´t even have any ´spirits´ to warm me. Can you believe that? ;-)

Yep, global warming is here.
Oops, I meant climate change is here.
Oh, global cooling is here.

Cold and snowy in Colorado today.
But last summer was hotter than normal, dry and windy.

So which is it? Warming or cooling.
It´s neither.
It´s typical weather variation.

Man has been recording weather records for about 150 years. Are we to draw conclusions for such a short period. The Earth has had weather for 5 billion years.

Baudette, Minnesota...on the north western part of the state gets pretty cold in the winter. I was stationed up there at a Radar site (692nd)in 1964 and we had 60 degrees BELOW ZERO for weeks at a time. Getting frostbite is a court martial offense just like a bad sunburn in the summer. Wear your parka, parka pants, bunny boots and gloves...only saw one case of frostbite and that was a case of foolishness. Everyone survived very nicely, went ice fishing, hunting, played hockey, curling, cross country skiing, etc...it was NOT the end of the world. It made us laugh that the weather guys never reported our temperatures, instead they went to warmer places like International Falls (far warmer) and maybe Duluth...weenies!

It is the IPCC´s fault nobody is ready for cold. Outside their bubble, many people are saying that the quiet Sun could mean a climate cold snap. Which is, like, duh, but they are managing to obscure this obvious connection. It is their fault these people died. And those homeless people in Poland (last year?)

Most of us will not experience such harsh winters, but with rising costs many will suffer because they cannot afford to pay for oil or higher electric bills.

Not true. Maybe taxpayers would suffer trying to come up with enough money to pay the fuel bill. They´d get a double whammy because their tax rates or fees would go up again to cover the cost of increased HEAP aid for the grifters.

CAIRO - A militant Islamist group has warned tourists to leave Egypt and threatened to attack any who stay after February 20, raising the prospect of a new front in a fast-growing insurgency in the biggest Arab nation. The Sinai-based Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis group, which claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that killed two South Korean tourists and an Egyptian on Sunday, made the statement on an affiliated Twitter account. "We recommend tourists to get out safely before the expiry of the deadline," read the tweet, written in English

TOKYO/WARSAW - China, the EU and environmentalists criticized Japan at U.N. climate talks on Friday for slashing its greenhouse gas emissions target after its nuclear power industry was shuttered by the Fukushima disaster. The Japanese government on Friday decided to target a 3.8 percent emissions cut by 2020 versus 2005 levels. That amounts to a 3 percent rise from a U.N. benchmark year of 1990 and the reversal of the previous target of a 25 percent reduction. "Given that none of the nuclear reactors is operating, this was unavoidable," Environment Minister Nobuteru Ishihara said.

Although CO2 is considered a "greenhouse gas" that contributes to climate change, if the Energy Department (DOE) finds partners to capitalize on the research of one of its laboratories, someday cars might run on sunshine. Technically, cars would run on the product of sunlight, CO2, and water using a "two-step solar thermochemical cycle" developed by the Albuquerque, New Mexico government lab. The DOE posted the special notice seeking interested companies on the Federal Business Opportunities website on Tuesday: Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia) is conducting ongoing research and development into solar fuels, the conversion of sunlight, CO2, and H2O into high

Ford Motor Co. says it has developed a car that can sniff out open parking spaces ahead — and then park itself in that space, even without a driver behind the wheel. (snip) Ultrasonic sensors can detect an open parallel, diagonal or perpendicular parking space ahead while a vehicle is traveling up to 18 miles per hour, with enough lead time that the driver doesn’t overshoot the space. The driver can then brake, shift to neutral, and press and hold the Fully Assisted Parking Aid button in the car. At that point, parking-aid software will maneuver the vehicle into the parking

Carlos the Jackal loses life

Self-styled revolutionary "Carlos the Jackal" has lost an appeal against his life sentence for deadly attacks in France in the 1980s. The Venezuelan, whose real name is Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, has always denied playing any role in the bomb attacks that killed 11 people. But a court in Paris upheld his jail term on Wednesday. The 63-year-old, who is also serving a life sentence for a triple murder in 1975, was captured in Sudan in 1994. By that time he had earned global notoriety as a Marxist militant who masterminded deadly bomb attacks, assassinations and hostage-takings.

Riots grip Stockholm suburbs

Rioters have lit fires and stoned emergency services in the suburbs of Stockholm for the third night in a row after a man was shot dead by police. Incidents were reported in at least nine suburbs of the Swedish capital and police made eight arrests. On Sunday night, more than 100 cars were set alight, Swedish media report. Police in the deprived, largely immigrant suburb of Husby shot a man dead last week after he reportedly threatened to kill them with a machete. The founder of a local youth group told Swedish media the riots were a reaction to "police brutality".

NPR’s popular “Wait Wait, Don’t Tell Me” trivia show gets its fair share of big name political guests (Bill Clinton called in once, for example), but host Peter Sagal knows that there’s a specific shortage he’d like to fill: Republicans. Asked by Vulture, “Is there a dream guest for you? Someone you’ve been trying to get that you think you never will?” Sagal responded, “I would love to get more Republicans on the show.” “One of the things I really envy about Jon Stewart is how many times...

Neurosurgeon Ben Carson says the White House wanted him to apologize for “offending” President Obama after he famously delivered a conservative message at the National Prayer Breakfast last year. Carson, the former director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, recalls the events surrounding his 2013 speech in his new book, One Nation: What We Can All Do To Save America’s Future. The Daily Caller obtained an advance copy of the book, which is set for release May 20. “He did not appear to be hostile or angry,” Carson writes of Obama, “but within a matter of minutes after the conclusion of

Megyn Kelly’s "Kelly File" is a great news show. She’s incisive, informed and customarily handles the toughest guest with aplomb. But her lengthy interview of Facebook C.O.O. Sheryl Sandberg about her second book in the Lean In series Lean In: For Graduates was a head shaker. Amazing that she of all people allowed Sandberg to restring the same old, same old, shamed, and shopworn feminist myths about women and girls and then jangle it in front of her viewing audience like something new out of the box. Indeed Kelly all but genuflected in front of this woman. Kept her on thru

On Saturday, I wrote about the standoff at Bundy Ranch. That post drew a remarkable amount of traffic, even though, as I wrote then, I had not quite decided what to make of the story. Since then, I have continued to study the facts and have drawn some conclusions. Here they are. First, it must be admitted that legally, Bundy doesn’t have a leg to stand on. The Bureau of Land Management has been charging him grazing fees since the early 1990s, which he has refused to pay. Further, BLM has issued orders limiting the area on which Bundy’s cows can

Less than a minute into his speech at the Boston marathon bombing memorial on Tuesday, Vice President Joe Biden went tragically off script and told the crowd of Boston bombing survivors that "it was worth it." After expressing how impressed he was with the tribute, he said somberly, "let me say to those ´quote survivors,´ my God, you have survived and you have soared. It was worth it. I mean this sincerely - just to hear each of you speak. You´re truly, truly inspiring." The audience sat in stunned silence until Biden declared, "I´ve never heard anything so beautiful than

Casual marijuana use may come with some not-so-casual side effects. For the first time ever, researchers at Northwestern University have analyzed the relationship between casual use of marijuana and brain changes – and found that young adults who used cannabis just once or twice a week showed significant abnormalities in two important brain structures. The study’s findings, to be published Wednesday in the Journal of Neuroscience, are similar to those of past research linking chronic, long-term marijuana use with mental illness and changes in brain development. Dr. Hans Breiter, co-senior study author, said he was inspired to look at the effects of casual

Whatever the burning political question of the day, millions of Americans have relished the opportunity to tune into Rush’s program, knowing that he would quickly take that hot potato, throw a few gallons of verbal kerosene into the mix and elevate the matter into a five alarm fire with a just a few well-chosen words spoken in the style only Rush Limbaugh could

Look, everyone loves Sean Connery, particularly Sean Connery. That’s why he plays Sean Connery in every movie he’s in. People love that Scottish brogue so much, they don’t mind that he has it when he plays Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez, an immortal Spaniard in Highlander. The guy even won an Oscar for playing an Irish cop with a Scottish accent. Talk about sexist double standards: Meryl Streep has to master foreign dialects to get her golden statuettes. Connery just has to show up on time. In economics you devalue a currency by printing too much of it. In film you
