Lost amid the shock and horror of Friday´s news was a remarkable op-ed in the Wall Street Journal by Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, who should no longer be called a "rising star" of the GOP. He commands attention by virtue of being smart, good at his job, and not a white guy. So it´s significant that he chose to use his platform to break ranks with many social conservatives in his party by calling for over-the-counter sales of birth control pills. Of course, Jindal did so by couching his argument
Comments: Sullivan can´t help sniping at Jindal for a "hyper-partisan defensive posture", when he is only advising the GOP why our own rhetoric and postures should change.
East Indians are considered to be Caucasian which is based on their bone structure not skin color. FYI, most on the right believe in people making their own decision on birth control and not the government making us pay for it.
Jindal is right. De-politicize the issue, and you take away one of the Democrats´ most effective weapons. Who knows how much damage Santorum did to Republicans with his idiotic comment that, if he were president, he´d talk to the nation about how birth control wasn´t okay for Christians.
How is making birth control available over-the-counter going against conservative social values?
If it´s an over-the-counter medicine, it´s not covered under insurance. Nobody is forced to buy it, but they will spend their own money to buy it if they chose to buy it.
Employers won´t be forced to cover it in their insurance either, since over-the-counter drugs aren´t covered by insurance.
Laws are already on the books that wouldn´t force any pharmacy to sell it over-the-counter if they had moral convictions against it.
Most conservatives use birth control. I don´t know of any conservatives that want to ban birth control. They just don´t want to force any employer that has moral reasons not to pay for birth control to have to pay for it or go out of business (or at least pay huge fines).
Bobby Jindal is one of my few hopes left that the Republican Party might just survive as a real major party of conservatism and not a minor ´´Demon-RAT lite´´ party.
well, I don´t have a problem with what he said as long as I don´t hear any stories about what a devout Catholic he is. Republicans didn´t say anything about birth control as far and banning it so I wasn´t too concerned about it. Sounds to me like Jindal is letting the dems set the table on what we believe or don´t believe.
I remember when they banned phenylpropanolamine because 1 out of a 100 million women or some ridiculous number might possibly have a chance of perhaps someday having heart trouble. But yeah, let´s make birth control pills OTC so kids can buy them and get even further feminized. The war on men continues by all means possible.
I totally agree with Bobby Jindal on this. The overriding fear and suspicion liberals have of conservatives is that we want to restrict the ability to engage in sex of any sort, without dealing with the consequences. Of course, over the counter birth control won´t protect them against STDs, but might help reduce the number of abortions, the last chance birth control that is the holy grail of liberals.
Yeah, I have the same problem. A lot of people who seem to be classified as non-white (e.g., many Hispanics, Middle-Easterners, and Asian Indians) sure look white to me and fall into the classic "Caucasian" category and seem pretty white to me. I think the goal is to peel off enough "whites" by classifying them non-"white" so that they can declare "white" people a minority. They could get there now if they would just take a page from 19th Century nativists and classify people of Irish, Italian, Slavic, Greek, and Jewish descent as non-white, too.
Of course the real issue is culture, not skin color, facial features, or build, which is how all of those groups once attacked by the nativists came to be widely considered "white". It´s also why few people think of East Asians, or even Asian Indians for that matter, when they hear the word "minority" or "non-white" because those ethnicities have largely assimilated culturally.
Speaking to Governor Jindal´s comments, there are already several effective means of birth control available over-the-counter. The one type of birth control that both parties are politicizing can be a medical disaster for some people. This has nothing to do with conservatism and, as one poster has already pointed out, we need to quit letting them set the table.
The essence of the problem is not whether the author is an idiot or whether Jindal is a fool or anti-conservative or is giving in to the Marxist POS in DC.
The essence of the problem is why did we lose this last election and how will we hold the line in 2014 and win in 2016.
The lefties are laughing their butts off watching us rip ourselves apart from inside.
Between them and us, we are doomed!
As Rush recently said, ‘We are watching the collapse of the American society’.
Do you negative harpies want to continue supporting that collapse or are you ready to work for a consensus that creates a foot hold for rebuilding this republic.
Draw a line in the sand so the rest of us can determine those who are with us and those who are against us.
Do I support OTC Contraceptions? No.
Will the OTC Contraception issue allow Dems to keep control of the Senate and WH? Yes.
Will I concede the OTC Contraception issue? Yes, if it helps us control Congress and the WH.
We are looking at the probable permanent demise of the great experiment that is America.
We can either have an armed revolution or we can temporarily prostitute ourselves and win control of Washington and then start turning things around via a constitutional government that most of believe in…….
Think about it. The future of our children and grand children depends on our success or failure!
The Obama administration expedited visa applications for about two dozen foreign investors for a Las Vegas casino hotel after pressure from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his staff, the Washington Times reported Tuesday. The Times, citing internal government documents, said the decision to overturn a prior, normally non-appealable visa decision ultimately benefited several companies whose executives have been heavy Democratic donors. The paper said it also came despite concerns about “suspicious financial activity” involving some Asian applicants. Reid, who represents Nevada, personally reached out to the top official at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Alejandro Mayorkas, setting in motion a process that
California’s budding doctor rebellion against Obamacare appears to be genuinely spontaneous, lacking leadership from a single individual or organization. As the Washington Examiner has reported in recent days, an estimated 70 percent of California´s physicians -- ranging from general practitioners to specialists -- are "just saying no" to Obamacare´s Covered California health insurance exchange. Although it appears leaderless, some observers believe that very spontaneity may make the doctor rebellion a formidable force in California’s health-care future. “Doctors are realizing what is happening and spontaneously they are acting like this. There’s a movement growing,” said Sally Pipes, president of the San Francisco-based
Democrats make a lot of silly statements. The trick isn’t finding a pronouncement by a liberal politician which — in a way nearly unique to politics — simultaneously brings a grimace, a giggle, and a groan, but figuring out whether the speaker is an outright liar or just living in a liberal echo chamber reminiscent of Pauline Kael (or at least the political mythology surrounding her). Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, is a reliable representative of the outright liar camp: No echo is loud enough to make her actually believe that Democratic candidates will
It’s long been said that Democrats and their supporters who cry “racism!” at everything that smells like opposition to their left-wing agenda are misguided, or in some cases, smear merchants who lack all credibility whatsoever (looking at you, MSNBC). Well, get a load of the T-shirt that this recently departed national figure – whose impeccable left-wing bonafides should never be doubted – has on:(Snip for photo)That’s anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela wearing a T-shirt that endorses getting an ID and voting in 1998. We’ll anxiously be waiting your apology. Oh wait, you won’t apologize, will you?
No, Obamacare isn’t Katrina for Democrats. Katrina was an act of God and/or nature, a phenomenon beyond the control of mere human beings, a catastrophe not of choice, but of nature’s necessity, outside the realm of man’s will. George W. Bush didn’t cause it to happen, nothing he did could have made it not happen, and he surely did not make it worse. The federal response wasn’t inspired, but the reason this mattered was that the mayor of New Orleans and the governor of Louisiana were not only perhaps the two stupidest people ever to hold public office, but the stupidest people
You know a president is in deep trouble when even an improving economy can’t boost his popularity. That’s the situation facing Barack Obama, as optimism about a less anemic recovery in the coming year has done nothing to halt the slide in his approval numbers. With every poll showing him in deep trouble, it’s time for the White House to call in reinforcements and that’s what they’ve done by getting former Bill Clinton chief of staff John Podesta to return to the West Wing as a counselor. Podesta, a veteran liberal ideologue as well as a friend of current White
Apparently having decided to embark upon a course of self-parody, the National Reconnaissance Office — the other NRO — sent out a press release sharing the logo for its new spy-satellite program, NROL-39. The image is that of an evil-looking giant octopus with its tentacles encircling the entire planet over the motto: Nothing Is beyond Our Reach.(Snip)Our relationship with the national-security and public-safety bureaucracies has changed. It used to be that you called the fireman to get your cat out of a tree; now the policeman shoots your dog. We have police rolling through the streets of such combat zones
US President Barack Obama may have moved the masses attending Nelson Mandela’s memorial service with his stirring eulogy, but it was his grinning "selfie" with the Danish and British premiers that set social networks abuzz. In a candid moment captured by a photographer, Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt can be seen holding up her smartphone, with Obama lending a helping hand, as they pose for a picture with David Cameron, all three of them smiling broadly in their seats at Soweto’s World Cup stadium.(Snip)Mashable, the news and technology website, ran the photograph under the headline: ‘‘Dear Obama: Funerals are no place
When I was a kid, I knew two different Santa Clauses. The first had a fat belly, rosy cheeks, a long white beard, and skin as pink as bubble gum. He was omnipresent, visiting my pre-school and the local mall, visible in all of my favorite Christmas specials. Then there was the Santa in my family’s household, in the form of ornaments, cards, and holiday figurines. A near-carbon copy of the first one—big belly, rosy cheeks, long white beard: check, check, check. But his skin was as dark as mine. Seeing two different Santas was bewildering. Eventually I asked my father what
On his way to the podium at the memorial ceremony for former South African president Nelson Mandela, President Obama walked down the line of dignitaries, greeting other leaders there to pay their respects. Among the hands shaken: that of Cuban leader Raul Castro. Obama neither made a special effort to shake Castro’s hand nor to avoid him. A snub might have been awkward: In his speech, Obama praised Mandela’s “greatest gift” as “his recognition that we are all bound together in ways that can be invisible to the eye; that there is a oneness to humanity; that we achieve ourselves by
The Obama State Department has finally released a second round of photos revealing the harrowing devastation wrought by a terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012. The new photographs depict rampant damage to the consulate. They show charred walls, smoldering fires, Arabic graffiti defacing exterior walls, and scattered debris throughout. The extent of the damage would lead any reasonably serious person to conclude that this was a cold, calculated attack, carefully coordinated to mark the 11th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001. Unfortunately for the American people, the Obama-Clinton-Rice cabal that led to the Benghazi cover-up was
A black fashion student says he was brutally attacked by a gang of Hasidic men who shouted anti-gay slurs at him while he was walking through Williamsburg after a night of partying, the Daily News has learned. Taj Patterson, 22, was headed home to Fort Greene around 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 1 when he says more than a dozen ultra-Orthodox Jewish men began assaulting him on Flushing Ave. and yelling, “Stay down, f----t!”
A “presidential selfie” featuring President Barack Obama, British Prime Minister David Cameron, and Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service began making the rounds this morning, but it’s the person not included in the frame who caught everyone’s attention: As anyone with two eyes and a Twitter account has noticed, Michelle Obama does not appear amused. Of course, though a picture says a thousand words, not all of those words are necessarily true. FLOTUS might not have even known the photo was taking place. Or she could disapprove of funeral selfies. Either way.
Johannesburg - A man who provided sign language interpretation on stage for Nelson Mandela´s memorial service, attended by scores of heads of state, was a "fake," the national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa said on Tuesday. Asked about the claim by The Associated Press, South Africa´s government said it was preparing a statement. Three sign language experts said the man was not signing in South African or American sign languages. South African sign language covers all of the country´s 11 official languages, according to the federation. It wasn´t immediately clear if the unidentified man was using a
