| MANILA, Philippines — Philippine legislators passed a landmark bill Monday that would provide government funding for contraceptives and sexuality classes in schools despite strong opposition by the dominant Roman Catholic Church and its followers, some of whom threatened to ask the Supreme Court to block the legislation. (snip) In a scene considered unusual just a few years ago, lawmakers openly defied the church´s stand during the plenary voting, which was shown live on nationwide TV.

Oh, yes, just think, we could be like a third world country if only we could have government funded contraceptives....and Sandra Fluke would like us then, too! What are we waiting for?

The Philippines is the most steadfastly Catholic nation in Asia, perhaps in the world. It is almost inconceivable that this legislation got through.

Wichita, Kan., -- A Kansas physician says he makes the same income and offers better quality care to his patients after he dumped all health insurance companies. Thirty-two-year old family physician Doug Nunamaker of Wichita, Kan., said after five years of dealing with the red tape of health insurance companies and the high overhead for the staff he hired just to deal with paperwork, he switched to a system of charging his patients a monthly fee plus the price of an office visit or test, CNN/Money reported.

DETROIT (WWJ) – There’s still a 50-50 chance Detroit will file for bankruptcy. That’s according to Detroit Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr, who has detailed a plan for the city’s financial future in a 134-page proposal to creditors. Orr on Friday sat down in a closed-door meeting with about 150 creditors, bond holders and unions to discuss the city’s fiscal situation, seeking concessions that would save Detroit millions of dollars in payments. Perhaps the most dramatic aspect of his plan: Orr said, starting now, there will be a moratorium on debt payments for all unsecured funded debt.

ROMULUS, Mich. A team led by a state-appointed emergency manager said Friday that Detroit is defaulting on about $2.5 billion in unsecured debt and is asking creditors to take about 10 cents on the dollar of what the city owes them. Kevyn Orr spent two hours with about 180 bond insurers, pension trustees, union representatives and other creditors in a move to avoid what bankruptcy experts have said would be the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. Underfunded pension claims likely would get less than the 10 cents on the dollar.

Fearless Fosdick, the ace gumshoe in the old Li’l Abner comic strip who was assigned to prevent an unwitting shopper from buying the can of poisoned beans crafty evildoers had slipped into the food supply, is obviously the inspiration of the men who set out to collect the telephone records of every American. Fearless patrolled the city’s supermarkets, shooting every little old lady who crossed his path right through the heart, leaving a large hole as she was about to drop a can of beans in her shopping cart.

On Thursday, I held a news conference announcing my intent to pursue legal action against the federal government for infringing on Americans’ Fourth Amendment rights. The National Security Agency’s collection of Verizon’s client data probably only scratches the surface. A court order that allows the government to obtain a billion records a day and does not name an individual target is clearly beyond the scope of the Fourth Amendment, which states clearly that warrants must be specific to the person and the place.
