Well then why don´t we eliminate all spending on everything but the military, medicare and social security? We don´t need the Department of Energy and Education, PBS, NPR, Planned Parenthood, ethanol subsidies, Americorp the list of wasteful spending is endless. But both parties want to continue to tax and spend. Every Senator or Representation goes to Washington thinking they have to "bring home the bacon" to please their constituants for their State or District. That kind of thinking has to end or we will end up going over a fiscal cliff.

I guess the time for believing in sacrifice and not living beyond your means is over! There are people out there who have never known what it means to put their country before their own selfish desires. Then again, pollsters have a way of skewing the results by the way they ask a question. I´m hoping that this is the case and that America has not lost it´s spirit for doing the right thing, and not allowing our govt spending to spin out of control.

People are generally for tax increases - as long as it´s someone else´s. Spending cuts are fine too - as long as it doesn´t affect their stuff. People want the tough choicess made - as long as they´re unaffected.

What cuts?

They´re only looking to slow the rate of increase. So, instead of an 8% increase in program funding they may get 5% increase. But, in State and Federal Gov´t speak, those are considered "cuts".

It´s not like the program gets $100 and it´s being cut to $95.
It´s more like the program gets $100 and the projected increase is $108, but they´ll only get $105 next year.

I sure wish Republicans would illustrate this simple message.
Then, link the idea of making gov´t more effective, more efficient and more productive to minimize the effects of the reduced spending levels.

Talk about government doublespeak. Why is it when spending cuts come up the 1st two expenses are Defense and SS/Medicare? Government made your paying into ss and medicare mandatory so the tax payers would not have to pay for your welfare. Then they spent the future of that totally corrupt ponzi scheme 20 years ago and now it´s greed on the part of the citizens to not want to reduce the benefits. Lying crooked bastids.

Our neighbors´ twenty-something daughter, who lives comfortably with her parents, spent the summer traveling in Europe but just received a federal grant to pay 100% for her Master´s in some sort of school counseling field. They are good neighbors, but I´m enraged! Why should hard-earned tax dollars be given to this cosseted girl?

In other words, WaPo -- most Americans insist they want the free lunch... even though there never was such a thing in the first place. But thanks to decades of unscrupulous, biased reporting, the majority of Americans are convinced that we can force revenue into the coffers through profligate spending, because the fiscal conservatives´ preoccupation with avoiding debt will coerce them into raising taxes to cover the cost....

The last budget that was "balanced" i.e. spent no more than tax revenues received.
The 2004 budget levels, closing all Czars, offices and departments not funded in the budget.
The last budget passed by Congress and signed by the President, not one penny more.
