| Most Americans want President Obama and congressional Republicans to compromise on a budget agreement, though they, too, are unhappy about the options that would avert the “fiscal cliff,” according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. The strong support for compromise belies widespread public opposition to big spending cuts that are likely to be part of any deal. Most Americans oppose slashing spending on Medicaid and the military, as well as raising the age for Medicare eligibility and slowing the increase of Social Security benefits, all of which appear to be on the table in negotiations. Well then why don´t we eliminate all spending on everything but the military, medicare and social security? We don´t need the Department of Energy and Education, PBS, NPR, Planned Parenthood, ethanol subsidies, Americorp the list of wasteful spending is endless. But both parties want to continue to tax and spend. Every Senator or Representation goes to Washington thinking they have to "bring home the bacon" to please their constituants for their State or District. That kind of thinking has to end or we will end up going over a fiscal cliff.

Not surprising in the least! Obama and the other demagogues on the left keep harping in the "rich" needing to pay their "fair share." Low information voters (Obama supporters) think the problem can be solved by raising marginal tax rates

I guess the time for believing in sacrifice and not living beyond your means is over! There are people out there who have never known what it means to put their country before their own selfish desires. Then again, pollsters have a way of skewing the results by the way they ask a question. I´m hoping that this is the case and that America has not lost it´s spirit for doing the right thing, and not allowing our govt spending to spin out of control.

People are generally for tax increases - as long as it´s someone else´s. Spending cuts are fine too - as long as it doesn´t affect their stuff. People want the tough choicess made - as long as they´re unaffected.
Anyone else see a pattern here?

Totally made up with no basis in fact.
Exactly what we have come to expect from one of the worst "news"papers in the world.

What cuts?
They´re only looking to slow the rate of increase. So, instead of an 8% increase in program funding they may get 5% increase. But, in State and Federal Gov´t speak, those are considered "cuts".
It´s not like the program gets $100 and it´s being cut to $95. It´s more like the program gets $100 and the projected increase is $108, but they´ll only get $105 next year.
I sure wish Republicans would illustrate this simple message. Then, link the idea of making gov´t more effective, more efficient and more productive to minimize the effects of the reduced spending levels.

Talk about government doublespeak. Why is it when spending cuts come up the 1st two expenses are Defense and SS/Medicare? Government made your paying into ss and medicare mandatory so the tax payers would not have to pay for your welfare. Then they spent the future of that totally corrupt ponzi scheme 20 years ago and now it´s greed on the part of the citizens to not want to reduce the benefits. Lying crooked bastids.

Our neighbors´ twenty-something daughter, who lives comfortably with her parents, spent the summer traveling in Europe but just received a federal grant to pay 100% for her Master´s in some sort of school counseling field. They are good neighbors, but I´m enraged! Why should hard-earned tax dollars be given to this cosseted girl?

In other words, WaPo -- most Americans insist they want the free lunch... even though there never was such a thing in the first place. But thanks to decades of unscrupulous, biased reporting, the majority of Americans are convinced that we can force revenue into the coffers through profligate spending, because the fiscal conservatives´ preoccupation with avoiding debt will coerce them into raising taxes to cover the cost....
Lying Communist sacks of excrement.
In fairness, there´s a symmetry to the GOP´s political shenanigans, when it comes to misleading voters. But the MSM not only avoid reporting on the big Liberal lies -- they´re the very agents who willingly deliver those lies.

Quit your job. Get federal housing assistance, food stamps, free NØbamacare, free NØbamaphone, etc, etc, etc.
Why wait until you have no choice? Jump on the bandwagon now. Your dignity (and the Constitution) really lost all value on 11-6-2012. 52% of the voters decided it for all of us.

They didn´t ask me!!! Cut everything back to the levels of (in order of my preference)
The last budget that was "balanced" i.e. spent no more than tax revenues received. The 2004 budget levels, closing all Czars, offices and departments not funded in the budget. The last budget passed by Congress and signed by the President, not one penny more.

Fox News chief Roger Ailes has sent a memo to his subordinates at the leading cable news network. He sent this memo to his staff today in connection with the federal investigation into an alleged leak to Fox News reporter James Rosen, a story that the Washington Post’s Ann E. Marimow broke earlier this week. The memo’s a masterpiece, too. For all those who wonder what it is about Ailes that endears his people to him — and that makes him such a good interviewee for any media reporter lucky enough to get an audience

Anthony Weiner’s New York mayoral candidacy was only made more improbable today after he revealed that he visited a Houston psychiatric facility following his resignation from Congress in 2011. Haunted by scandal surrounding his sexually explicit online communications with women, the Democratic former congressman sought treatment for his compulsive behavior from mental health professionals at the Gabbard Center. According to its website, the facility provides “3-day outpatient psychiatric evaluation,” particularly to “professionals who are in personal or professional crises.” While Weiner did not disclose

LONDON — British police late Thursday arrested a man and a woman in connection with the butchering of a British soldier on a London street, as anti-Muslim protests sprang up across the country. The arrests fueled speculation that the gruesome knife attack Wednesday — the first successful terrorist act in Britain since 2005 — was part of a wider plot, and prompted questions about the prevalence of Islamic extremism in the country and how to combat it. British officials moved quickly to increase security in London and other major cities Thursday as police raided

Three days of hearings have shown that IRS scrutiny of conservative organizations extended beyond a few rogue employees in Cincinnati, that the agency staged its announcement of the bad news to try to limit the damage, and that the White House knew more, and knew it earlier, than it first admitted. Republicans argue that they also uncovered evidence that the auditor’s report could have been completed months ago — even before the November elections. They also said an internal IRS investigation confirmed the untoward behavior as early as July 2012.

Let us stipulate that now might not be the best time — with IRS officials exposed for abusing power, caught in self-serving deceptions, invoking their constitutional right against self-incrimination — to dramatically expand the authority and size of their agency. But this is what Obamacare requires. Thousands of new IRS agents will implement 40-odd provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act — the exact number is a matter of dispute since the law itself is so confusing. The largest tax law and social policy change in a generation will be imposed

For the past five years, beginning with his first presidential campaign, Barack Obama has promised that his government would be the most open and transparent in American history. Recently, while stating that he makes “no apologies” for his Justice Department’s investigations into suspected leaks of classified information, the president added that “a free press, free expression and the open flow of information helps hold me accountable, helps hold our government accountable and helps our democracy function.” Then, in his National Defense University speech Thursday, Obama said he was “troubled

“Horrible customer service.” That’s what the newly fired IRS commissioner averred was the agency’s only sin in singling out conservative political groups for discriminatory treatment. In such grim proceedings one should be grateful for unintended humor. Horrible customer service is when every patron in a restaurant finds a fly in his soup. But when the maitre d’ screens patrons for their politics and only conservatives find flies paddlewheeling through their consomme, the problem is not poor service. It is harassment and invidious discrimination. And yet two IRS chiefs (Steven Miller and Douglas Shulman) insisted that the singling-out of groups according

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose career in public life came to an abrupt end when he sent lewd pictures to a college student on Twitter, jumped back into politics on Wednesday by announcing a bid for mayor of New York City. “Look, I’ve made some big mistakes and I know I’ve let a lot of people down,” the Democrat said in a 2-minute video announcing his bid. “But I’ve also learned some tough lessons. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. She was determined to

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

On “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Barack Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.
