Nativity plays are more entertaining than any other live performance. According to a recent survey by the Bible Society, 37 percent of Britons polled believe Father Christmas visited the baby Jesus. Some are also convinced that Mary placed her baby not in a manger but in a Moses basket. None of this surprises me, because, at so many schools, the simple nativity play has now been renamed Christingle or Winter Festival, and in their desperate attempt not to allow any pupil to feel “left out”, teachers welcome anyone in a costume onstage. You might easily see Santa or Superman
Comments: Oh, this is a treat! The funniest bits begin after the intro and they´re a delight, sheer delight.
I just love the move ´´Love Actually´´. It is funny, tender, heart-warming, sad. Did I say funny? And the Christmas Nativity play has a lobster in it, and I think some other underwater creatures. The time I saw it on an alphabet network it was fine. Bit on the suggestive-porno side on Showtime. Just in case you´re watching with children. The film is about love actually. Very nice.
I had a notoriously strong willed little brother. As PK´s we were always expected to toe the line but he never saw the point. During one Christmas pageant, he went up on stage with his class of 5 year olds to sing a couple songs, and absolutely refused to sing. Stood there with his arms crossed and stared balefully out at the audience. When they finished singing, all the kids filed off the stage. Except my brother, who refused to budge. My long suffering mother finally had to go up and drag him off by one arm, while he dragged his heels and hollered at the top of his lungs, "I DIDN´T GET TO SING! I DIDN´T GET TO SING!" I was in jr high at the time and my friends and I nearly died laughing. Still one of my favorite pageant memories.
Well, that and the time he crawled under the piano bench while my mom was playing, and stripped himself completely naked ( he was hot).
There is a philosophy taught in business schools called Just in Time which preaches that factories should be run as leanly and efficiently as possible. Rather than paying to keep people and machinery on standby you reduce the capacity of a production line to the level at which it can just about cope with demand. It is a more profitable way to run a factory but I am not sure I would be so keen on the theory if I had been lying in the back of an ambulance for six hours and 22 minutes waiting for a hospital bed
France last night stood accused of encouraging thousands of refugees to attempt to enter Britain illegally after a homeless shelter dubbed “Sangatte II” was opened in Calais. [Snip] Yesterday in Calais there were at least 500 refugees, some of whom had spent two years travelling from countries such as Afghanistan, Kurdistan, Turkmenistan, Eritrea and Pakistan. The Daily Express was the first British newspaper inside one makeshift tent city where desperate men and women, some with children only a few months old, are prepared to risk their lives to reach to the UK. Alongside penniless vagrants at the shabby litter-strewn site
Barack Obama has arrived in South Africa to lead the American delegation at a memorial service for former South African President Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg. But his party is reportedly stuck in traffic and he is said to have arrived late at the stadium for the ceremony. [Snip] But Mr Clinton, Mr Carter and his wife Rosalynn have all traveled separately to the event. According to reports, Mr Obama and his delegation are stuck in a lines of traffic caused by tens of thousands of people making their way to the event. Mr Obama is among the foreign leaders who
Those big, beady, reptilian eyes glaring up from the water surface? They´re not just looking at you. They´re thinking it over. American alligators, and their cousin Indian marsh crocodiles, apparently have figured out that if they balance twigs on their snouts, wading birds will try to snatch them for nests. For the quick-snapping gator, that´s free lunch. In other words, the beast with a brain the size of a bean knows how to use it. That could make a person think twice about trying to outwit a "dumb" gator in Lowcountry waters. A recently released study--published in Ethology, Ecology and
Nelson Mandela’s memorial service and his funeral on Sunday may not produce the biggest gatherings ever in Africa. [Snip] A barnstormer of an address can be expected from President Obama – who has said the battle against apartheid sparked his first political activities. But what a logistical and security nightmare it will be. The public won’t need any accreditation to get into the stadium. And someone is going to have to do a very deft seating plan--David Cameron will not want to be sitting too close to Raúl Castro and Robert Mugabe. President Hassan Rouhani of Iran may finally be
Eight of America’s biggest internet companies, which include Google and Apple, have joined forces and written to President Obama expressing concern at bulk data collection in the US and its implications for the integrity of the internet and the privacy of the citizen. This is an important matter for the UK as well. The Intelligence and Security Committee of Parliament (ISC), which I chair, announced recently that we will be conducting a full inquiry into the intelligence aspects of privacy and security in Britain. We will, in the next few days, be inviting written submissions of evidence both from ministers
BlackRock, the world’s biggest investor, has warned that central banks are poised to tighten monetary policy in the Anglo-Saxon countries and China, advising clients to be ready to pull out of global stock markets at any sign of serious trouble. “2014 is the year to squeeze more juice out of risk assets. But investors should be ready to discard the fruit when it starts running dry,” said Ewen Cameron Watt, chief strategist for the BlackRock Investment Institute. The group said in its 2014 Investment Outlook that investors have “jumped on the momentum train, effectively betting yesterday’s strategy will win again tomorrow”,
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a new five-year strategic plan to improve safety for elderly drivers and passengers. Although they are statistically among the safest on the road, the number of older drivers is increasing dramatically — and with it, that group´s numbers of injuries and deaths. Since 2003, the population of older adults, defined as age 65 and older, has increased by 20% and the number of licensed older drivers increased by 21% to 35 million in 2012, according to NHTSA. Last year, NHTSA reported that 5,560 people older than 65 died and 214,000 were injured
A veteran Washington adviser who has worked for four Presidents on both sides of the political aisle said that the stunning Government Accountability Report report that found President Barack Obama has not had a one-on-one meeting with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius since the passage of Obamacare over three years ago is an indictment of the entire White House operation and shows that the Obama administration has bordered on "malfeasance." "I have no doubt the White House is right, that Secretary Sebelius was in several group meetings with the president about health care," Gergen caveated, "but the whole
President Barack Obama’s Facebook page on Saturday posted a message honoring the dead from Pearl Harbor—accompanied by a picture of Obama descending the stairs next to the Pearl Harbor Memorial. The picture barely fits the name of the Arizona Memorial so it can frame Obama in the foreground. The post´s statement reads: Today, with solemn pride and reverence, let us remember those who fought and died at Pearl Harbor, acknowledge everyone who carried their legacy forward, and reaffirm our commitment to upholding the ideals for which they served. President Obama The Obama Administration´s current shipbuilding plan shrinks the size of
Barack Obama did not tell the whole story this autumn when he tried to make the case that Bashar al-Assad was responsible for the chemical weapons attack near Damascus on 21 August. In some instances, he omitted important intelligence, and in others he presented assumptions as facts. Most significant, he failed to acknowledge something known to the US intelligence community: that the Syrian army is not the only party in the country’s civil war with access to sarin, the nerve agent that a UN study concluded – without assessing responsibility – had been used in the rocket attack. In the months before the attack,
Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, the hapless, goalpost-shifting so-called "architect" of Obamacare, told Fox News´ Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday that President Barack Obama´s promise "if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor" was absolutely true--with one important caveat: if you like your doctor, "you can pay for it." Wallace grilled Dr. Emanuel, challenging his false claims that California´s enrollment was keeping pace with the percentage of the young population necessary to keep the system afloat, and pointing out that the president´s promise on doctors would collapse once people lost their insurance or their
Just how much do many Hollywood liberals hate conservatives? In an interview with Playboy, Ben Affleck said, "When I watch a guy [on film] I know is a big Republican, part of me thinks, I probably wouldn’t like this person if I met him": PLAYBOY: You developed a political profile campaigning for presidential candidates Al Gore, John Kerry and Barack Obama. How did that come about? AFFLECK: I grew up in a house with a mother who was a teacher and a Freedom Rider—very left-wing Democrats living in a heterogeneous working-class neighborhood. I picked up a lot of those values there, and I
