This description is fairly typical. A person with developmental and/or psychiatric disorders is far more likely to be a victim than to create victims. Everyone hears about a horrific case like this precisely because it is so outside the norm. Most never hear reporting of the dozens, hundreds, thousands?? of people with these disorders who are robbed, raped, killed or who commit suicide every year, because those actions happen one by one. But every person who is involved in working with people with these disorders is familiar with such stories.

According to the Daily News, his mother withdrew him from Newtown High School and homeschooled him following a dispute with the school.

Will HIPPA keep everyone from learning the nature of that dispute? Did it have to do with his emotional health? The Daily News story says that people described his mother as paranoid and a survivalist who believed the world was on the brink of economic/social collapse.

Try as we might, there is no way we can foresee these events and unless someone else is carrying at that particular moment in time, there is only heartache that can come of it. These people were trapped. And this young man´s parents were living in denial.

The maniac´s computer most likely holds a great deal of evidence regarding his state of mind, interests, associates, and plans. The police will reveal this evidence in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, the radical leftists, like Obama, Feinstein, Durbin, Bloomberg, and Schumer, who have already reached their ´conclusions´, must be restrained in the US Congress and state houses from damaging the rights of law-abiding Americans.

AND -- the speculation goes on and on and on....

No one will know for sure what set this kid/man off....

I think WE should mourn and leave the rest to the police to figure out....

The attacks on this mother for being a "preppie" (new hip word for survivalist" are disgusting. I´ll bet millions of Americans are doing this. Most gun owners I k ow are afraid of the government more than robbers! This is a sly way to blame the dead victim, instead of the system that let her down.
My guess is that he was suicidal. Our culture has helped "create" this new form of suicide....mass shootings. Violent video....stop buying it!

Along with everything else, this young man was apparently born with what is known as "congenital insensitivity to pain". A rare hereditary condition inherited from both parents when each has the bad gene. When he hurt himself, no matter how badly, he could not feel it. A person with this condition can fracture a bone without pain.

An article elsewhere said that although the house was in the name of both of the Lanzas, she moved there 17 years ago with the boys and father Peter Lanza never lived there. She has been dealing with this for 17 years.

The press is putting out there anything that they can think of. No facts to back up what they say about the mother. She isn´t here to set the record straight.

No one ever said he had been buzzed in. That was one of the erroneous conclusions drawn by those who read the school was secured and one had to be buzzed in.

Good point #16 and one I hadn´t thought of at all. The maker of that video is in jail on trumped up charges. What about all of the gazillionaires who make their fortunes on violent video games? Interesting theory from #19. Back in the day, before other drugs became available to treat ADHD, my husband probably prescribed Ritalin (or the generic methylphenidate) for about 5000 children. And the number of serial killers among them? Wait for it...zero.

#16 and #18 -- I´m unashamed to be part of the school arguing that video games condition players to feel natural doing what the player does in the game, so violence or debauchery in the player´s mission will inculcate violence or debauchery into the player over time. And I agree that the Left is exploiting the CT shooting as a convenient way to get Benghazi out of the news. But any relationship between video game violence and Benghazi is orthogonal, at best.

The Benghazi video supposedly touched-off the violence, not by conditioning viewers to identify and imititate with a violent game, but by offending them to a point of rage -- or at least that was the story our ´erudite´ administration tried to foist off on the world (and which our ´vigilant´ media quite happily helped them sell through their propaganda, er, I mean news.

It´s advisable not to read too much into what the shooter did inside the school. Concentrate instead on what the liberals ignore. These losers never try to shoot up a the local VFW club, a biker bar or any[lace else where they may encounter people with the skills to fight back.

I read somewhere, and now I wished I remembered where, that the Obama Administration took 200 million dollars out of fiscal years 2011 and 2012 that was supposed to go for the protection of schools. Bet we´ll never hear that from the LSM.

Something like this is so far removed from the thinking of kindergarten teachers that I have known. Perhaps the principals at these schools have to handle spouses / parents who are separated and at odds with other, so they may spend some time thinking of the possibilities. Thus, the one teacher who put the kids in the closet and then told the insane gunman that the kids were at the gym before being killed seems even more heroic.

It makes you wish that there were at least one "Kindergarten Cop" a la Arnold Schwartzenneger at each school.

I was taken aback when I saw the photo of the killer. Just looking at the picture, his appearance alone would cause instincts to kick in, telling you that this person was probably imbalanced, that there was something wrong with him.

As a retired teacher any kid in elementary school that had his symptoms would have been put up for evaluation in my school district. Make no mistake, this kid did not start to exhibit these symptoms in high school. They were with him from an early age. Mom must have noticed because most mothers do, even before authorities figure out there is a problem.

Education and psychology are just beginning to figure out how to treat and educaate people with autism. For the longest time there was conflict on how to identify children with autism. They are just figuring out how to teach them or treat them. Do you ever figure out a way to make them contributing members of society? How do you tell a parent that they never will be able to care for themselves? They don´t know the answers yet and maybe it will remain a mystery for a very long time. Predicting human behavior is a crap shoot at best. Science just doesn´t know yet.

Blaming Mom is a non-starter. Blaming guns is even worse. Blaming schools might get you a little further up the road. Unfortunately schools have taken up just about every responsibility that parents should be doing. They are also very good at denial thinking that it would never happen at their school, but the schools are terrible at protection of their employees and students. My biggest fear is terrorists although Mr. Lanz shows that evil can come directly from the neighborhood. Our schools are not prepared and they are now targets since Obama and Feinstein are blubbering about guns. They aways mis-identify the problem.

When you look at the violence and brutality in older movies, much was implied, without the close-ups of exploding tissue and blood splashing about. These days, nothing is left to the imagination -- special effects have created such hyperrealism in movie violence that the audience can´t help but become inured to it. No one looks away. Same with video games.

Surely that kind of exposure must affect a kid´s perception of violence.

I recall my sister getting a free video game with the purchase of a video card years ago. It was a shooting game and the graphics were extremely primitive, very pixelated. But there were plenty of red pixels flying around when you hit a target and we never launched that game again.

I´ve always thought that Quentin Tarantino would be a sadistic killer if he hadn´t channeled his impulses into his movies. I despise him and his work, but he is celebrated and his movies make money.

Please don´t blame Ritalin. My sister with a sleep disorder has taken it for dozens of years and is not at all violent. Also, I had a student who was so quiet I worried about him, tried to help with social skills. When the school year was almost over, he turned into the worst student I have ever had. I believe that he had a mental disorder aggravated by the home environment. This young boy´s adorable younger sister got all the attention, and only when he started acting up, did he get attention. Negative attention is better than none. The next year he was much worse and the parents blamed the school, and sued the teacher and the school. Settled out of court when they fired teacher and they got a monetary settlement. The fired dedicated teacher never got over this. Sad, sad, sad.
