"Show up and shut up." Rabbi Harold Kushner was my guest for a PBS series on God in America, and this was his condensed version of advice for those who would comfort the grieving. It ought to circulate around the halls of American broadcast media for once again there were no boundaries the collective media would respect in the aftermath of the murders in Newtown, Conn. The rush to assemble a media mob is now expected and the ratings consequences to the networks of ignoring such a horror are no doubt enormous, but the intrusion into the awful grief

I want to vomit every time I see one of these vultures shove a microphone in front of someone grieving in the aftermath of a tragedy. "What are you feelings in light of this tragedy?" Most people are too polite yo say something along the lines of "Get the fark out of here!" or "How the hell do you think I feel a**hole?!!".... Sincere apologies to staff for the language... But really?

The media is who needs to be reigned in!! Leave people alone!! For God´s sake, and for the sake of the sanity of the survivors!!!!

The ghouls will not be an ugly presence at the funterals of these murdered children.

We can voice our opinion by keeping the TV and radio turned OFF.

I was present in the hospital when the doctor informed the parents that their infant daughter had suffered a crib death. "Show up and shut up", is essentially the same advice I received from an Air Force chaplain, also present, when I asked for advice on how to best help them. Provide a figurative shoulder to cry on (or a real one if that´s the nature of your relationship). Let them vent in any way they want and keep your opinions to yourself if you disagree with what they say in the immediate aftermath. That isn´t the time to dissent.

On Saturday, Soledad O´Brien was in full vulture mode. These people are so phony. She put on her ´serious´ face, and then proceed to walk over the dead bodies of children to further her political agenda. It was almost as bad as Katie Couric´s performance at Columbine.

I don´t want to know the murders name. I want it to vanish in anonymity. I will listen to the LSM when they cover the Mall Shooting in Oregon that was thwarted by a citizen with a concealed carry permit.

Evil exist, and is on the rise. Evil will always strike a soft target. Frankly I find myself more at ease at a rifle range with 20 or 30 heavily armed strangers than in a shopping mall or movie theater.

#6 "..Frankly I find myself more at ease at a rifle range with 20 or 30 heavily armed strangers than in a shopping mall or movie theater…"

Exactly right. Saturday I had lunch with a friend who I knew was wearing a .45 under his arm (only because I know he always does) and….it was very reassuring .

I´m wrapping Christmas gifts and listening to Christmas music.....

I´ve said my Rosary for all the victims and know they are being cared for by our loving Father Who Art in Heaven....

Now for sure the tv is turned off when the empty chair comes on the air. Where was he when the other massacres occurred? I´m sure he politicized it. This is just a guess since I can´t listen to him. I´m not for guns but can one imagine the power he would have if he managed to outlaw guns? It makes one shutter. There is a reason for the 2nd amendment.

I was listening to CBS national news on the radio during the day. I could not believe when I turned on Fox News TV it was a totally different story. All day long CBS radio was WRONG about everything especially the name of the shooter. They were acusing the brother. What is wrong with the irresponsible "news" people. I agree, what they tell us is not news. So what if obama cried, it is not news.

The article is precisely right - it is not news it is voyeurism, and in pointing out that a time of high emotion is the worst time to make public policy ( gun control in this case ) but that is the very time and method the left uses to push this bad policy. Everything Obama does is pushed in some crisis, never let a crisis go to waste!

My cousin was one of the first people shot in the Long Island Railroad massacre. Family and friends surrounded his parent´s house and kept the media away. The day of his funeral, the parents announced to the media that the funeral would be held at 3pm. It was actually held at 10am and by the time the media arrived it was all over and everyone had left.

That is how to handle the media in situations like this.

The MSM, Obama, Feinstein, Bloomberg et al, inter-alia are all racists

Yeah? Why do you say that?

504 murders of young black men so far 2012 just in Chicago. Up 25% from 2011.

Since 1976, the number of young black men age 14 and up murdered in America? 220,000. By other young black men

Add in black females 14 and up killed by other blacks same time period and the total rises to a staggering 300,000. 8,500 per year. 23 per day for 35 years.

A Newton Conn school shooting every day in Black America. (crickets)

No word from Obama or Feinstein on this.

Just fiery rhetoric political talk talk when white suburban kids are killed.

Along with the mainstream media vultures, one makes a drive-by, more descriptively swoop-by, personal appearance for the occasion in order to impart one’s supposed wisdom and empathy.

Heeding the words of one who goes to almost unprecedented lengths to conceal one’s past seems to be an imprudent decision.

Who knows how many years were occupied with supplying mind and body with who knows how many “controlled substances?” (Isn’t that a lovely expression? “Controlled Substances” It almost sounds respectable, upright, elegant.)

Whatever happened to common sense? A dictionary defines it. Common Sense: “ordinary good sense or sound practical judgment”

We decry the media coverage of this tragedy, yet we read every word and watch every video. That´s why the media wallows in it, folks. The media is giving us what we want. If they didn´t cover it so intensely, we´d be asking "why is the mainstream media covering this event up?"

Perhaps it was the right thing for President Obama to go there but I can´t get past the administration´s stated policy to never let a tragedy go to waste....and so I haven´t listened to one word of his speech.

In times like this I refuse to watch the news. It´s always the same, adds nothing to the understanding and always exploits the grief of those parents and brothers and sisters who have to deal not only with the tragedy but also with the prying cameras and stupid interview questions. Then on to the only solution that shreds the constitutional rights of the citizens of this country. To be sure there are other effective solutions that are always off the table but nobody in the news business seems interested in even discussing as a possibility. Color me disgusted with this part.

This reminds me of Nickel Mines and the way the media acted then; it was simply hideous. There was one media-wench who dressed up in what she supposed was an Amish dress and showed up on the porch of one of the families. She was immediately escorted off the property. The State Police Commissioner gave the media what seemed like updates every 12 seconds just to keep them from bothering the families. He instituted a ´No Fly Zone´ over the cemetery the day of the funerals and the media STILL found a way to be intrusive.
They reported ad nauseum on how considerate and sensitive they were being to the Amish community.
I chose not to watch the coverage since I figured those goons were only there to sensationalize every aspect of it.
I was also afraid I´d accidentally get a glimpse of Obama inserting himself into the event. Why he thought it was appropriate to travel to CT and burden law enforcement there with security details at a time like this I cannot fathom. A simple statement of condolences offered from the WH would have been sufficient but then there would not have been a photo op.

The reason one may want to throw up at the presence of the media mike in front of a grieving soul is because it is a boundary violation. It is intellectually dishonest for the media to be feigning that they are there because they "care" about you and the grieving. They are there for ratings, imho. Boundary violiations make one physically as well as mentally sick...and enraged. We are being violated every singe day by many who hold the reins of power these days...sickening indeed.

However, I do believe the people are going to rise up eventually...which may be why so many hollow bullets are being purchased by the government, no?

#2.. my TV has not been tuned into any of this since the initial report. The news regardless of station has simply been OFF. It is my personal protest against the 24/7 media frenzy. Not only must it be tortuous for the victims´ families and I am sure highly disrespectful BUT it also encourages copy cats and desensitizes us all to more horror. I don´t ever want to be desensitized to the slaughter of innocent people.

I won´t call them vulture... vultures at least perform a vital function in nature. These lying, distorting media outlets and "reporters" are infected, oozing sores on the conscience and mind of America. They do no good.

I went out of my way this weekend not to watch anything about this tragic event. I don´t know these people; cannot sympathize with them as I´ve never experienced such a thing and don´t see how mumbling words of so sorry could help.

And I don´t recall President Bush rushing to Virginia Tech after that horrific event. Of course, if he did, the same media extolling Obama would have attacked Bush as politicizing the event.

I´ve had ESPN on the last 30 hours, mostly without sound. When they mentioned the massacre it is brief, heartfelt, and they show the support for the Sandy Hook families of people across the US who attend sporting events, and the players. No vultures interviewing family and friends. But a brief interview with the Giants player who wrote the name of a boy on his shoes and "My Hero" next to it. Incredibly sad but not gruesome like the MSM.

My father was a first responder present when a famous NY newsman, covering a dicey airliner landing, cursed in anger that the plane landed safely, because a crash would have been such a great story.

All the first responders cheered when a priest punched the famous newsman, knocking him on his keister in the foam covering the runway.

Forever after, the famous newsman was greeted as "Foamy" by a large number of said first responders.

The news media are despicable.

Proponents of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) insist that the law will extend health insurance to millions, expand access to health care, and improve Americans’ overall health. But, as the New York Times recently reported, at least 20 percent of the new enrollees have not paid their premiums. They therefore do not really have insurance. But even for those enrollees paying premiums, having health insurance is not the same thing as getting good health care, or any health care. In fact, it doesn’t matter how many Americans obtain insurance under the ACA. Most will have difficulty finding a physician. Many Americans

Exactly forty years ago Patricia Hearst stunned the nation when she turned up as a bank robber, a mere two months after she was kidnapped by the violent cult that called itself “The Symbionese Liberation Army.” Her astonishing transformation was documented by bank cameras on April 15, 1974. A few years ago, the corruption convictions of several prominent plaintiffs´ lawyers put a spotlight on dishonesty in American civil courts. Now the sleaze has burst back into the news with cases involving Chevron and Dole Food Co., this time with an international twist. Last month, a federal court in Manhattan found that a U.S. plaintiffs´ lawyer had masterminded a multibillion dollar fraud and extortion scheme against Chevron in Ecuador. On Saturday, I wrote about the standoff at Bundy Ranch. That post drew a remarkable amount of traffic, even though, as I wrote then, I had not quite decided what to make of the story. Since then, I have continued to study the facts and have drawn some conclusions. Here they are. First, it must be admitted that legally, Bundy doesn’t have a leg to stand on. The Bureau of Land Management has been charging him grazing fees since the early 1990s, which he has refused to pay. Further, BLM has issued orders limiting the area on which Bundy’s cows can

Like him or hate him, there is no disputing that Rush Limbaugh’s very special brand of mixing right-wing politics with his flare for entertainment has produced one of the most successful radio programs in the medium’s long history. Whatever the burning political question of the day, millions of Americans have relished the opportunity to tune into Rush’s program, knowing that he would quickly take that hot potato, throw a few gallons of verbal kerosene into the mix and elevate the matter into a five alarm fire with a just a few well-chosen words spoken in the style only Rush Limbaugh could

Less than a minute into his speech at the Boston marathon bombing memorial on Tuesday, Vice President Joe Biden went tragically off script and told the crowd of Boston bombing survivors that "it was worth it." After expressing how impressed he was with the tribute, he said somberly, "let me say to those ´quote survivors,´ my God, you have survived and you have soared. It was worth it. I mean this sincerely - just to hear each of you speak. You´re truly, truly inspiring." The audience sat in stunned silence until Biden declared, "I´ve never heard anything so beautiful than

Casual marijuana use may come with some not-so-casual side effects. For the first time ever, researchers at Northwestern University have analyzed the relationship between casual use of marijuana and brain changes – and found that young adults who used cannabis just once or twice a week showed significant abnormalities in two important brain structures. The study’s findings, to be published Wednesday in the Journal of Neuroscience, are similar to those of past research linking chronic, long-term marijuana use with mental illness and changes in brain development. Dr. Hans Breiter, co-senior study author, said he was inspired to look at the effects of casual

Look, everyone loves Sean Connery, particularly Sean Connery. That’s why he plays Sean Connery in every movie he’s in. People love that Scottish brogue so much, they don’t mind that he has it when he plays Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez, an immortal Spaniard in Highlander. The guy even won an Oscar for playing an Irish cop with a Scottish accent. Talk about sexist double standards: Meryl Streep has to master foreign dialects to get her golden statuettes. Connery just has to show up on time. In economics you devalue a currency by printing too much of it. In film you
