| NEWPORT, Wales — Is this what life on the other side of the “fiscal cliff” looks like? If President Obama and congressional Republicans fail to reach a deal in the coming weeks, Americans face a fierce wave of tax hikes and spending cuts that could threaten the U.S. economy. Yet Britain has already crashed over its own economic precipice, with the Conservative-led government unleashing a radical experiment in austerity since coming to power in 2010 that has seen public spending corralled and taxes increased on this side of the Atlantic.

The idea of a soft landing is a myth. All the attempts to lessen the economic problems we have been facing since 2007, have simply extended the time before a recovery can take place. Britain will go through some hard times, but their recovery will be sooner for their efforts.

When I drive down the road, and look at all the storage places where we rent space to keep all the junk we drug home from the stores, I know that we have no discipline. We have too much money, and far to much credit.
And why do we give food stamps to a 300 lb, overweight man or woman?

If it wasn´t for those darned conservatives trying to spend less money across the pond, Britain would be doing just fine.
I say we should spend like there is no tomorrow, because there probably is no tomorrow, at least the way we remember it.
I want to thank the Washington Post for having the courage to finally point this out. Spending more than you have always leads to prosperity. Let the good times roll.

I was on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show last night, talking about the Benghazi talking point emails. Near the end of the segment, Hugh asked whether I thought the presidential election might have turned out differently if Obama and Clinton had not succeeded in covering up the truth about Benghazi. As tax collector for the nation’s second-largest state, I know it’s a necessary function — from the fire station to the space station, nothing government does is possible without taxes. Of course the president deserves some of the blame. Yes, it’s extremely unlikely he ordered the IRS to discriminate against tea-party, pro-life, or Jewish groups opposed to his agenda (though why anyone should take his word for it is beyond me). And his outrage now — however convenient — is appreciated. But when people he views as his “enemies” complained about a politicized IRS, what did he do? Nothing. Imagine for a moment if black civil-rights organizations, gay groups, or teachers’ unions loudly complained to members of Congress and the press that the IRS was discriminating against them.

So allow us to do the work for him: There is no comparison.
