Barack Obama´s emotional response to the Newton shootings was measured, heartfelt, and exceptionally moving. When seen through a political prism, however, it contained one a single highly charged line: "We´re going to have to come together to take meaningful action to prevent further tragedies like this, regardless of the politics." This has thrown America, once again, into a frenetic debate about the right to bear arms. However fervently Obama might wish for political concord--and even though, in the words of former Democratic congressman Bob Edgar, “nothing is more powerful than a classroom of kindergarten kids getting killed by assault weapons”
Comments: Jake WS has put together a sane, logical column explaining why strict gun control is not the answer to gun violence in the US. While he admits to a personal belief that US gun laws should be tightened he logically explains why they are not. Good man. Doesn´t let his beliefs overpower the reality of our cultural, political and philosophical stance.
Get TF out of here. Obama is the last one qualified to comment on this problem. He goes out there 24X7 telling his base to be ANGRY that somebody screwed them, took success from them, gets re-elected. OK, this is just a vehicle to get low information voters voting for Progressive Dems. But when the 1% of mentally ill, mentally challenged don´t understand the nuance of voting versus the nuance of shooting, it remains the Progressive/Dem responsibility for stirring up this massive rage.
The Dems are the Party of Destruction, in their own design and in ways they didn´t even intend.
These shootings (ever more common) are blood on their hands.
Let us look at the killers background. Is he an anti-gun advocate? How much influence did his mother have on his beliefs? The writer of the article comes close to developing a valid reason a wacko will kill children. We no longer can take the mentally ill off the streets. I blame the libs for these killings more than anyone else. What has happened to this country that these types of events are more and more common place. This never happened when I was growing up.
People who want to cause mayhem will find a way to do it. The worst school killing in this country was caused by three home-made bombs. What´s creating these mayhem-makers? That´s the question. Answer: Divorce courts, Nurse-Ratched women bosses, the illiterate, uncaring masses of day-care(?really)losers, the 40year-long successful emasculation of American men, frustrated multi-tasking (can´t be done)mothers that nobody´s happy when they see her drive up. That´s what causes boys to go mad and destroy anything they can find.
Hollywood liberals don´t have a problem making the films that promote violence. Game makers don´t have a problem with games that do nothing but kill. Does anyone know if this guy was into these video games? That could have something to do with what happened. These same liberals are the ones who want gun rights taken away.Morgan Freeman gave his take on it and I know he has been in films that promote violence.
Yo..yo... AR15s have been available to the public since about 1965. What is different now??? That is the real question!! Why are people willing to use them to kill unarmed citizens?? We need more mental health answers.
Yo..yo.. Cho blasted the Va Tech kids and what did the Virginia authorities do?? Why they enacted more gun control laws. AND Virginia is still 48th in the country for spending on mental health. 48th...got that?? The Virginia and US authorities don´ t give a crap about sick people!! Just put them in jail. IT´ CHEAPER!!
Laws preventing institutionalization of mental defectives (not a politically correct term, but accurate) of various types causes the country to periodically have to deal with killings. Sometimes two or three, sometimes more.
There is an inverse relationship to murders and ease of firearms access. More guns = Less crime. Absolutely proven fact, and the hoplophobes have been frantically faking data to try to prove otherwise.
Millions legally and safely carry guns daily in the US, guns are NOT the problem. Evil and insane people are the problem. Brits are prohibited form handgun ownership, their handgun murder rate is higher than the US at times.
Humanity will never eliminate evil and insane, the only possible improvement is by identification, court proceedings and removal from society. Prisons and asylums.
We need to take meaningful action about mental illness, particularly as it affects children, preteens and young adults. We had a chance in November to take meaningful action against all this quasi-emotional grandstanding, but the majority chose this blow-hard instead.
This isn´t just mental illness. This is young kids with limited guidance, self responsibility and too much time on their hands. Put these kids to work in long, hard, physically draining jobs. Teach them to take responsibility for their actions, give them opportunities to succeed based on their own hard work and to fail based on their laziness. Don´t just think they have a disease, give them a pill or lock them in a room.
I have mentioned this before but the way the Israelis deal with situations like this is almost every able adult over there carries a firearm. In a typical Israeli school the principal, the teachers, even the janitor all carry firearms. Their buildings are very secure also. If this bozo tried to break into an Israeli school he would have been shot dead on the spot, no questions asked. That is how you keep a school secure, with am armed staff. Whether it is a determined terrorist, or a determined crazy man, they can be stopped before they are allowed to do their dirty work.
One more time - We don´t trust the government to be the only ones with weapons. That´s the Founders´ argument for the right to bear arms - the untrustworthiness of governments. Obama for example loves cramdowns and is in the middle of one now, slow-walking Boehner off a cliff. Wants to bring a gun to a knife fight. Wants to punish his enemies. Thinks IDs at voter stations are voter suppression. Actually these sentiments are perfectly normal for the kind of personality type that seeks the presidency. We don´t want those people armed when we are not. This is a sentiment from the late 17th century and remains true today.
Yes the Connecticut shootings were a terrible thing to happen...In a country of over 300 million people maybe ten flip their balance and do major tragic things. We have over 100 million guns in the country and when some are used in a wrongful manner the media, the left, the anti gun crowd, go nuts...they DEMAND the destruction of guns as if that will stop the senseless killings. How blantantly stupid they are. The state of Illinois and it´s main city of Chicago are adamantly ANTI gun and have been for years...check this for yourself, this year so far Chicago has had nearly 700 shootings...in a state and city that does not permit guns...it has been a week since a federal judge declared that carrying concealed is to be legal there. I doubt seriously that that long road to carry has yet been opened. The point is that 700 souls have been shot in an anti gun city...Connecticut lost 25 but Chicago 700...that´s 28 times more than Connecticut...where´s the outrage by the President, by the Congress, by the cops...just the grieving families...but no action. Do you think that banning guns will stop crime? It´s a MENTAL situation and we have hundreds of thousands of loonies running loose. A MENTAL thing and now we have three STATES that permit the open use of drugs that ALTER our thinking and the users behavior. Do we really think that things will get better? How foolish and stupid the whole issue is. Who is addressing the MENTAL problems? At least I want to be able to protect MYSELF from all the LEGAL nuts on the loose, a cop is too heavy to carry around.
Three members of a so-called ´Muslim Patrol´ were today jailed at the Old Bailey for repeatedly trying to enforce Sharia law in East London. Jordan Horner and another Islamic extremist told one couple they could not hold hands while walking down the street, because it was in a ´Muslim area´. The radicals also attacked a group of men drinking in the road, and told a woman she would face ´hell fire´ because of the way she was dressed. Horner, 19, Ricardo MacFarlane, 36, and a 23-year-old man who cannot be named for legal reasons were sentenced to 68 weeks, 12
A primary school has banned Enid Blyton children´s stories so it could win a race equality award. The Famous Five classics were dumped because they had ´inappropriate ethnic stereotypes´ with references to gypsies, golliwogs and a dog with a name starting with ´N´. [Snip] Two of the offending stories were Blyton´s Five Go To Mystery Moor and The Children of Kidillin. The much-loved author wrote more than 600 books before her death in 1968. In the 1990s some of her stories were edited to remove parts that were considered racist, sexist or anti-Semitic. Deputy head Phil Clarke said many of
Dozens of people have died in northern Kenya in a week of fierce clashes between rival ethnic groups, aid sources and reports said. The ongoing unrest, centred around the town of Moyale in Marsabit county on the frontier with Ethiopia, has seen villages burned down and many families forced to flee over the border. According to the Standard newspaper, at least 27 people have been killed and thousands more displaced over the past week. Kenyan peace and anti-tribalism campaigner Jaffer Isaak said he believed the toll was somewhere between 70 and 120 dead, while an independent international aid source, who asked not to
Despite ongoing anger about how the U.S. government is snooping on people around the world, one agency is still keen to boast about its spying - with a creepy cartoon octopus and an alarming logo. A top-secret rocket carrying spy satellites for the National Reconnaissance Office launched from the central California coast late on Thursday, and it had a large badge emblazoned on the side The new logo features a huge and sinister octopus, with just one angry eye visible, as it wraps its tentacles round the globe. Written underneath is: ´Nothing Is Beyond Our Reach.´
China is putting the squeeze on the New York Times and Bloomberg News, and it could have severe consequences for press freedom. The nation has blocked internet access to the two organisations´ websites, denied access to key events, such as the recent meeting between British Prime Minister David Cameron and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, and delayed visa renewal for more than two dozen reporters. [Snip] "Innovation thrives where people breathe freely, speak freely, are able to challenge orthodoxy, where newspapers can report the truth without fear of consequences,´´ Biden said at a meeting with business leaders earlier that day, as
Ministers from 159 countries have reached a deal intended to boost global trade at a meeting in Bali, Indonesia. The World Trade Organization´s first comprehensive agreement involves an effort to simplify the procedures for doing business across borders. There will also be improved duty-free access for goods sold by the world´s poorest countries. The deal, which could add about $1tn to world trade, gives developing nations more scope to increase farm subsidies. "For the first time in our history, the WTO has truly delivered," said WTO chief Roberto Azevedo, as the organisation reached its first comprehensive agreement since it was
The White House has announced that the President and First Lady will be traveling to South Africa next week to pay respects to Nelson Mandela. Mr Obama and his wife Michelle will be attending memorial events for the fallen South African leader but the specific details of when they will arrive or what events they will be attending have not been disclosed. The South African government announced that the formal state funeral will take place on December 15, capping off a 10-day mourning period. The Obamas are just two of a long list of international dignitaries who are expected to
Last summer on his $100 million family tour of Africa, Barack Obama hoped for a priceless photo op with Nelson Mandela, the ailing freedom pioneer who went from prison cell to the presidency of South Africa. Mandela´s family suggested that wouldn’t happen. So, the Obamas did a photo op in Mandela´s former prison cell. Which Obama’s White House quickly tweeted upon word of the icon´s passing at 95. [Skip] But Obama was also caught staring at television coverage of Mandela’s passing, which became Obama’s Photo of the Day.
Hardly a week goes by without Hillary Clinton receiving another award. Last month she was named a “Global Champion” by the International Medical Corps, received the American Patriot Award at the National Defense University Foundation and the Hermandad Award from the Mexican American Leadership Initiative. [Snip] At this rate, if a bunch of elderly left-wing Swedes toss her the Nobel Peace Prize early on, the way they did to Obama, it will barely rate mention among all the other glittering trophies that have been bestowed on a woman whose only actual accomplishment was being married to a crooked governor with
Speaker John Boehner said his party should support gay Republican congressional candidates and urged his colleagues to “be a little more sensitive” when running against women. “Some of our members just aren’t as sensitive as they ought to be,” Boehner said. When asked if he thinks his party should support gay candidates, Boehner simply said: “I do.”
In February, the Bush family’s personal emails were hacked by Guccifer, a hacker who uncovered photographs of former President George H. W. Bush in a hospital bed and George W. Bush’s oil paintings in the process. It seems Guccifer has struck again, this time targeting former President Bill Clinton and the Clinton Library. The hacker has reportedly uncovered doodles of Clinton drawing on what were, at the time, classified documents. Among the doodles is apparently a picture of a penis. The document uncovered is a briefing of the strategic measures the United States could take prior Clinton’s decision to intervene in
Denver - A baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex ceremony must serve gay couples despite his religious beliefs or face fines, a judge said Friday. The order from administrative law judge Robert N. Spencer said Masterpiece Cakeshop in suburban Denver discriminated against a couple "because of their sexual orientation by refusing to sell them a wedding cake for their same-sex marriage." The order says the cake-maker must "cease and desist from discriminating" against gay couples. Although the judge did not impose fines in this case, the business will face penalties if it continues to turn away gay
Former President Bill Clinton shared an anecdote regarding Nelson Mandela and the aftermath of his impeachment Friday on CNN. Clinton revealed shortly after the “impeachment business” finished on Capitol Hill, Rep. Henry Hyde (R., Ill.) who managed the impeachment trial requested a meeting at the White House. The former president granted the meeting out of lessons of humility and forgiveness he learned from Mandela, he said: BILL CLINTON: I remember one day, oh, about a month after the whole impeachment business was over, Henry Hyde, who had run the whole show, unbelievably enough, maybe a few months after, it was
Amid an array of “knock-out” attacks against a number of Jews in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood, a city councilwoman pointed to the success of the Jewish community as triggering the aggression. Councilwoman-elect Laurie Cumbo emphasized that while she “admire[s] the Jewish community immensely” for its work ethic, black teens may see it differently. “While I personally regard this level of tenacity, I also recognize that for others, the accomplishments of the Jewish community triggers feelings of resentment, and a sense that Jewish success is not also their success,” Cumbo, who was recently elected, wrote in a letter. Chief among the issues
