Beneath the expressions of grief, sorrow and disbelief over the Connecticut school massacre lies an uneasy truth in Washington: over the last few years the Obama administration and Congress quietly let federal funding for several key school security programs lapse in the name of budget savings.Government officials told the Washington Guardian on Friday night that two Justice Department programs that had provided more than $200 million to schools for training, Staff has split headline and added text to prevent closure.

I´m sure the $200 million in training included NO weapons training for teachers and conceal carry for them. Probably just taught them how to be nice quiet victims

Another gimme-a-break story.
It must be the Republican´s fault.
The school allegedly had an upgraded entry system. $200M would not have helped.
Its the Obamaphone lady´s fault.

9 months after Obama became President he started a program of selling guns to Mexican drug cartels, Obama should have also attended the funerals of the thousands of people killed from the weapons he sold to Mexican drug cartels, and he should have apologized to all the victims family´s then Obama should have had himself arrested, but Obama is a Chicago crook and all he cares about is photo-ops.

Oh sure, all you rotten Repubs probably expect the Obamas to give up their 200 Million dollar Hawaii vacation just to protect our children. What nerve///////

$200 M isn´t that much. It only allows $1 M for training and $199 M for the cronies. That´s actually not enough...

This is not the feds business, it should be up to local authorities. There seems to be a lot of murdering nutcases running around and they are the ones that should be in jail and never see the light again.

Schools are a State and Local issue not a Federal issue. Some of the federal programs were earmarks, so they couldn´t even stand on their own as a federal bill. This is so low a federal priority that even President Obama decided to let the spending lapse.

Didn´t the Obama family spend at least that much on vacations and state dinners?

Local School Boards are responsible for security of local schools. Of course, I state the obvious for the governmentally challenged.

They may have let security in the school buildings lapse, but SSRIs, pumped into the children to keep them manageable, are enjoying a field day.

There shouldn´t be one cent of federal money going to local education. It just allows the feds to use funding as a cudgel to compel the states to do the feds´ bidding. I attended public school in the 50s & 60s when federal meddling was in its infancy. Then it was just some subsidies for school lunches and "impact fees" paid to local school districts with a heavy influx of military conneted students. Without the fed pursestrings, schools wouldn´t be saddled with abominations like No Child Left Behind and Headstart.

Barry lets the funds lapse, then sits back and waits for another rampage, then goes on tv and bemoans about gun control. See how he works?
As for schools, if those teachers gave up their 5% pay raises every year, they could easily afford their own security.

A teenage girl–an honor student who had just performed at President Obama’s inaugural–was gunned down Tuesday afternoon in the Kenwood neighborhood, just blocks from the high school she attended. CBS 2’s Mike Parker reports the victim, 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, was taking shelter from the rain with a group of 10 to 12 teenagers under a canopy in Vivian Gordon Harsh Park on the 4500 block of South Oakenwald Avenue around 2:30 p.m., when someone jumped a fence, ran up to them, and opened fire. James Carville slammed the “inhumane, idiotic” critics who questioned the legitimacy of Hillary Clinton’s recent head injury and said it was “duly noted” inside Clinton-land.“What kind of human being is going to think like that with everything going on with concussions, head injuries? The fact the woman was dehydrated from the fact that she’d been overseas so much — I just don’t know, and some of these people I know and I get along with,” Carville said Friday in a CNN interview. Staff has split headline, added text.

Former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist joined the Democratic Party with trademark panache, posting a picture of himself brandishing the signed paperwork on Twitter--from a White House Christmas party. Florida newspapers reported that President Obama responded to the news with a fist pump. That was Friday. Two days later, the newly elected chairman of the Democratic Governors Association said that Crist was “certainly high on the list” of recruits for the 2014 governor’s race. Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin also called Crist “an incredibly capable leader ... a great governor … and a very strong candidate,” although he said he wasn’t ruling out other potential candidates. A group of whistleblowers, including a number of aviation experts, have come forward in a new documentary to claim that the official explanation for the crash of TWA Flight 800 was wrong and a gas tank explosion did not bring down the flight off the coast of Long Island 17 years ago. However, the six whistleblowers, all part of the original investigation team, stopped short of saying the plane was shot down. Flight 800, a Boeing 747, had just taken off from JFK airport with 230 people aboard on July 17, 1996 enroute to Paris when it exploded

An attorney whose firm represents two Benghazi whistleblowers said Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, lied to the Senate when he said there was never a “stand down” order during the Benghazi attack on Sept. 11, 2012. “What was fascinating is that he explained his lie to them,” Joe DiGenova, an attorney representing one of the whistleblowers, told CNSNews.com. “He actually said they were sent to Tripoli. They were needed in Benghazi,” said DiGenova, a former U.S. attorney, now with the Washington firm of DiGenova & Toensing.

Likening religious schools to segregation--a racist system that forced blacks to attend different schools and use different facilities than whites in the American South--President Barack Obama told a town hall meeting for youth in Belfast, Northern Ireland on Monday that there should not be Catholic and Protestant schools because such schools cause division. "Because issues like segregated schools and housing, lack of jobs and opportunity--symbols of history that are a source of pride for some and pain for others--these are not tangential to peace; they’re essential to it,"

Amid a steady rise of backlash, Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old former National Security Agency contractor who was the source of a spring of leaks about the agency´s surveillance methods, conducted a live chat on The Guardian´s website Monday morning. Judging from some of the pointed questions he´s been asked and the reaction to newly leaked revelations over the past few days, it´s clear that much of the sympathy and support Snowden had built up for his early exposures is eroding. Many Americans supported his decision to leak information about a pair of National Security Agency surveillance programs, which, he detailed, gathered information

Listening to Barack Obama give his speech in Belfast on Monday, it was hard not to stifle a yawn. I kept waiting for the part when he would say something interesting, but, about three quarters of the way through, realised it wasn’t going to come. Judging from television pictures some of his young audience felt the same, after the initial rush of euphoria of receiving the rock star president in their midst had passed. This is not surprising, for we had already heard this number about the inspirational role of the Northern Ireland peace process and the Emerald Isle’s

Celebrity chef Paula Deen admitted in a recorded deposition to telling racist jokes, using the N-word, and planning a slavery-themed wedding, according to multiple reports. The May 17 deposition where she made the alleged admissions is part of a $1.2 million lawsuit brought by Lisa Jackson, the former manager of a Savannah, Georgia, restaurant run by Deen and her brother Bubba Hiers. Jackson alleges in the suit that Deen used the N-word at the restaurant and that Hiers sexually harassed her. According to the reports, in the deposition, Deen replied “Yes, of course,”

This is the thirtieth anniversary of the publication of How Democracies Perish, an analysis of the spread of world communism by Jean-François Revel, one of freedom´s most serious French defenders since Tocqueville. At the heart of this work, Revel details "The Tools of Communist Expansion," among which the most relevant for understanding our current situation comes in Chapter 16, "Ideological Warfare and Disinformation." The profound simplicity of Revel´s nuts and bolts account of totalitarianism´s Cold War advance, far from being obsolete
