| A seriously ill baby was forced to wait in an Accident and Emergency ward for more than 12 hours because there were no suitable beds available anywhere in the UK. The shocking case emerged as specialists yesterday warned the Department of Health about a national shortage of intensive care beds for children this winter. The Paediatric Intensive Care Society (PICS) says all 29 units in Britain have been running close to capacity in recent weeks because of a surge in cases of a nasty respiratory virus and that there are several examples of children having to wait for appropriate care.

Comments:
Another problem with universal health care--such a system cannot respond quickly enough to any epidemic, in this case Norovirus. This is the rough equivalent of a baby in Oregon needing a bed and not being able to find one within the state.

This is the same NHS that intentionally kills 130,000 patients per year of starvation + dehydration + terminal sedation, half of them without the patient´s knowledge or content, or that of their families. Often their next of kin only find that their loved one was put on the "Liverpool Care Pathway" when they discover his or her body in the morgue.
I wouldn´t trust any system that has the words "Natonal" "Health" "Service" in its title. They incentivize death - to free up beds. With the patients´ benefit in mind. Of course.

Efficiency...it´s all about sufficiency. There are enough beds 99% of the time. There is a high price to ensure beds 100% of the time. Lives will be lost, so one manages the losses...targeting the elderly and those with low values as economic units...like welfare recipients, the infirm or handicapped. This is Obamacare.

There has been a sixth night of rioting in Sweden´s capital, Stockholm, despite police reinforcements being deployed. Cars were set alight in poor suburbs inhabited largely by immigrants, although the unrest was reportedly not as serious as on previous nights. The rioting also spread outside the capital for the first time on Friday, with youths torching vehicles and buildings in two towns. [Snip] It is believed they were sparked by the death of an elderly man nearly a week before, who was shot by police after he allegedly threatened to kill them with a machete.

The leader of the Lebanese Shia militant Hezbollah movement, Hassan Nasrallah, has promised his supporters victory in Syria, where his fighters are backing President Bashar al-Assad. Mr Nasrallah said Hezbollah would stay in the conflict till the end. Syrian rebels in the besieged town of Qusair say they are under heavy bombardment from Hezbollah combatants. The town is close to the Lebanese border, a conduit for both the government and rebels to get weapons. [Snip] He said his movement could never be aligned with Syrian rebels who, in his view, were supported by the United States and Israel.

The Metropolitan Police has defended the way it responded to reports of the killing in Woolwich, south London, after questions were raised about how long it took officers to reach the scene. The force said police were there within nine minutes of the first emergency call and firearms officers were at the scene five minutes after that. HANAHAN--The U.S. Naval Brig is once again being mentioned as a leading alternative to put terror detainees on trial after President Barack Obama this week rekindled his push to shut down the terror-suspect holding site at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. “I once again call on Congress to lift the restrictions on detainee transfers from Gitmo,” he said. “I have asked the Department of Defense to designate a site in the United States where we can hold military commissions.” Speculation immediately re-focused on the brig at Charleston as a leading choice where some of the 166 detainees could go on trial.
