My long car ride mourning the

I’ve been out of pocket pretty much since the first sketchy reports this morning about a possible school shooting. A meeting, a luncheon and then 6 hours in the car.The car ride was enlightening because I followed the details of the Connecticut school shooting exclusively by listening to the radio. As in all these cases, the facts changed as the day went on. First, it was a mass shooting with a semi-automatic assault rifle, which the news reports noted would put back on the political table the

We don´t give young children access to matchsticks, car keys, sharp knives. Ancient cultures had rigid customs regarding these things before matchsticks, cars and firearms were invented. Guns are more lethal and a ´mistake´ can be deadlier. But all of these common sense ideas will go out the door as the Left begins demanding a ban on assault weapons - code words for ripping up the Second Amendment.

The left wants to "mainstream" any mentally ill person.

The left wants to confiscate your guns.

(Is that a short acurate summary?)

How should we identify the "mentally ill?" Should they wear a big "M" patch on their sleeve? This shooter reportedly had Asperger´s, which many highly functioning, productive members of society also have. The truth is, there really isn´t any way to be sure of stopping something like this. Gun control won´t do it--it would never be possible (nor desirable) to completely ban guns. The crazies who want to shoot someone will always be able to do so. Wasn´t there a similar situation in progressive, gun-hating Norway not so long ago?

Obama wants to come together and prevent any more .......,
I was listening for coming together and protect 4 unfortunate Americans in Benghazi.
Do you think after 3 months there has been any beefing up of any locations that the people on the ground have requested???

I´m old enough to remember when people who were considered to be "a danger to self and others" were committed to mental hospitals. I´m also old enough to remember how that model was deemed "to expensive" and abused patient rights, etc. Everyone became an out patient and became part of a group home. They closed all the mental hospitals, and expected drugs to cure every psychotic patient. It didn´t work.

The USA sure did do a bang up job of controlling guns in Fast and Furious and Benghazi, didn´t they? (no pun intended)

The parents were divorced and Adam Lanza it has been reported lived with his mother.
ADD, ADHD, bi-polar, etc. are not mental disabilities-----rather chemical unbalance. Too many receive medications for these disorders and it has been researched to indicate if taken off these meds the next bout of these disorders get progressively worse.
Take out MSG, aspertaine and all other additives and chemicals out of food, stop giving animals and foul hormones and antibotics and other NOT natural medications and one would see the difference in the population again.
So, equal blame on the FDA and other regulations play a big part in the communities today.

If this ´kid´ was living with his mom and dependent upon her for his needs, she is the sad one to have had to expect the worse and kept access to weapons out of his hands. We have a son with clinical depression who started cutting in high school and, yes, we took great care in controlling access to blades throughout our home. Was it a guarantee of protection, no. Was it a pain in the tush? Not as much as coming home to find him carved upon. I do think the PC Police have much of this carnage on their heads, as do the military peers & supervisors of Maj. Nadal, Ft. Hood murderer and others. Better to be a scold than dead.

Good to see someone like #11 on the thread, a professional who knows something about the subject. Much of the rest of the opinion on these threads is based upon what a Brit friend used to call "a storehouse of bogus information".

The mother was a gun collector. We don´t have the foggiest notion whether her guns were locked up or not. Nor do we know that a smart guy like her son Adam would know where to find the key. We don´t know that he ever showed one sign of violence. Something that would have caught this intelligent mother´s attention.

So we traipse through this story, further muddying the carpet with a bunch of speculation that is worth exactly nothing.

Parents with children of any age, or with special needs family members, in the home should lock guns in a gun safe, and if necessary, keep a gun at the ready for self protection, and out of reach of those who should not have access. My parents carefully watched us as children around a hot stove, a hot iron, electrical outlets, matches, to keep us out of harm´s way. It sounds as though this young man had easy access to his mother´s guns.

It is still true that if we banned guns, only criminals and tyrants and their brown shirts would have guns. I would rather take my chances with a conceiled carry crowd, and the ability to stop tyrants like Hitler and Chauchescu and Obama from ruling and reigning, and oppressing free people. Long live the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. And as one poster noted, a thousand innocent children are killed everyday on the abortionists table. Will guns protect them, or politicians? Bloomburg? They want to disarm dissent for their own selfish meglomania.

In the big picture, the gun laws work however anyone who has a family member who is not mentally stable and who has guns available should be considered just as guilty, as the perp if their guns are used by a family member to commit a crime. We need to get a grip on this without penalizing the majority of people who have guns who never ever commit a crime. Most people who have guns never commit a crime. On the other hand, who needs an assault rifle that fires numerous rounds other than a member or the military or our police force?
The NRA is being unreasonable and so is the government.

Hold on there, cowboy!Texas Monthly magazine sued the New York Times on Friday for poaching its editor. Jake Silverstein, who was hired away from the Emmis Communications title last month to become the new editor of the New York Times Magazine, was under contract at the regional monthly until the Times, “without legal justification or excuse,” caused him to breach that deal, the lawsuit claims. The six-page Texas state court action alleges that Times Executive Editor Jill Abramson started recruiting Silverstein in December 2012 — a full year before then-magazine editor Hugo Lindgren was ousted. New York - President Barack Obama is coming to New York City Friday to address the Rev. The topic also came up in a 2011 ’60 Minutes’ interview with Lesley Stahl weeks before the debut of “Politics Nation.”In outtakes posted from that interview, Stahl asked Sharpton if he was an FBI informant. The exchange got testy at times when Stahl continued to question Rev. First came the “polar vortex” — now it’s the “pollen vortex.”Forced to lie dormant by the long, brutal winter, trees are now set to start reproducing like crazy — and create a massive amount of pollen that could wallop your sinuses this weekend. Pollen count in the Northeast will soar to “high levels” Saturday and Sunday, when warm temperatures will prompt plants to create the sniffle-inducing substance, reports Pollen.com, which offers allergy “forecasts.” In New York City, where the temps could hit 70 degrees Saturday, allergy symptoms will “become more severe,” the site says. April is generally the worst month of allergy season,

President Obama stood Friday with the Rev. Al Sharpton and accused Republicans of trying to keep millions of Americans from voting, in a fiery speech days after new revelations about Sharpton’s past as an FBI informant. “The right to vote is threatened today in a way that it has not been since the Voting Rights Act became law nearly five decades ago,” Obama told the annual convention of Sharpton’s National Action Network in Manhattan. Obama’s appearance represented a presidential seal of approval of Sharpton’s role as a civil rights activist, amid the new revelations about how Sharpton used a wire to record

Two years before the Boston Marathon bombing, the Russian government concealed key information on one of the killers that might have thwarted the attack, a new report charges.Kremlin officials intercepted a phone conversation in which Tamerlan Tsarnaev discussed Islamic jihad with his mother, but they withheld the information from the FBI, according to the U.S. inspector general report that comes as the one-year anniversary of the bombing approaches. Had the FBI been privy to the red-flag phone call, it would have prompted the bureau to take an extensive look at Tsarnaev, according to The New York Times. “Had they known what the

His other executive action will require federal contractors to submit data to the government about their employees compensation by sex and race. Fears that high-speed traders have been rigging the U.S. stock market went mainstream last week thanks to allegations in a book by financial author Michael Lewis, but there may be a more serious threat to investors: the increasing amount of trading that happens outside of exchanges. Some former regulators and academics say so much trading is now happening away from exchanges that publicly quoted prices for stocks on exchanges may no longer properly reflect where the market is. And this problem could cost investors far more money than any shenanigans related to high frequency trading. When the average investor, or even

Carson, the former director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, recalls the events surrounding his 2013 speech in his new book, One Nation: What We Can All Do To Save America’s Future. The Daily Caller obtained an advance copy of the book, which is set for release May 20. “He did not appear to be hostile or angry,” Carson writes of Obama, “but within a matter of minutes after the conclusion of

Megyn Kelly’s "Kelly File" is a great news show. She’s incisive, informed and customarily handles the toughest guest with aplomb. But her lengthy interview of Facebook C.O.O. Sheryl Sandberg about her second book in the Lean In series Lean In: For Graduates was a head shaker. Amazing that she of all people allowed Sandberg to restring the same old, same old, shamed, and shopworn feminist myths about women and girls and then jangle it in front of her viewing audience like something new out of the box. Indeed Kelly all but genuflected in front of this woman. Kept her on thru

On Saturday, I wrote about the standoff at Bundy Ranch. That post drew a remarkable amount of traffic, even though, as I wrote then, I had not quite decided what to make of the story. Since then, I have continued to study the facts and have drawn some conclusions. Here they are. First, it must be admitted that legally, Bundy doesn’t have a leg to stand on. The Bureau of Land Management has been charging him grazing fees since the early 1990s, which he has refused to pay. Further, BLM has issued orders limiting the area on which Bundy’s cows can

Casual marijuana use may come with some not-so-casual side effects. For the first time ever, researchers at Northwestern University have analyzed the relationship between casual use of marijuana and brain changes – and found that young adults who used cannabis just once or twice a week showed significant abnormalities in two important brain structures. The study’s findings, to be published Wednesday in the Journal of Neuroscience, are similar to those of past research linking chronic, long-term marijuana use with mental illness and changes in brain development. Dr. Hans Breiter, co-senior study author, said he was inspired to look at the effects of casual

Look, everyone loves Sean Connery, particularly Sean Connery. That’s why he plays Sean Connery in every movie he’s in. People love that Scottish brogue so much, they don’t mind that he has it when he plays Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez, an immortal Spaniard in Highlander. The guy even won an Oscar for playing an Irish cop with a Scottish accent. Talk about sexist double standards: Meryl Streep has to master foreign dialects to get her golden statuettes. Connery just has to show up on time. In economics you devalue a currency by printing too much of it. In film you
