| A knife-wielding man injured 22 children and an elderly woman outside a primary school in central China as students were arriving for classes. The attack took place in the Henan province village of Chengping just before 8am, said a local police officer. The attacker, 36-year-old villager Min Yingjun, is now in police custody, according to an officer who declined to give her name, as is customary among Chinese civil servants. It is the latest in a series of similar periodic rampages at Chinese schools and kindergartens. A Guangshan county hospital administrator said the man first attacked an elderly woman

#1: this is the question the gun control advocates don´t want to explore. They want to talk about guns, not about the underlying social/political issues that might be contributing factors. It´s an uncomfortable conversation that I´m not even sure I want to have, but it needs to happen and we need to stop distracting from the issues by pointing at the means of the killing.
Didn´t England ban certain lengths of knives not too long ago?
Baseball bats are the most often used murder weapon in this country. What should be done about that?

Barack Obama announced an end to America’s war on terror last week. In future, he declared, he would restrict the unmanned drone attacks that had been his own signature anti-terrorist initiative, and he would really, really make an effort to shut down the prison camp at Guantánamo Bay--as he had promised to do way back when he was running for president the first time. Presumably, this pronouncement was designed to win back the favour of the liberal media, which has been energetically disowning him ever since his administration staggered into the most spectacular series of Washington scandals since Watergate.

There has been a sixth night of rioting in Sweden´s capital, Stockholm, despite police reinforcements being deployed. Cars were set alight in poor suburbs inhabited largely by immigrants, although the unrest was reportedly not as serious as on previous nights. The rioting also spread outside the capital for the first time on Friday, with youths torching vehicles and buildings in two towns. The leader of the Lebanese Shia militant Hezbollah movement, Hassan Nasrallah, has promised his supporters victory in Syria, where his fighters are backing President Bashar al-Assad. Mr Nasrallah said Hezbollah would stay in the conflict till the end. Syrian rebels in the besieged town of Qusair say they are under heavy bombardment from Hezbollah combatants. The town is close to the Lebanese border, a conduit for both the government and rebels to get weapons. The Metropolitan Police has defended the way it responded to reports of the killing in Woolwich, south London, after questions were raised about how long it took officers to reach the scene. The force said police were there within nine minutes of the first emergency call and firearms officers were at the scene five minutes after that. Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago.
