EPA to tighten standards
for soot pollution

Washington — In its first major regulation since the election, the Obama administration will impose a new air quality standard that reduces by 20 percent the maximum amount of soot released into the air from smokestacks, diesel trucks and other sources of pollution. The Environmental Protection Agency is set to announce the new standard on Friday, meeting a court deadline in a lawsuit by 11 states and public health groups.(Snip) The new soot standard has been highly anticipated by environmental and business groups, who have battled over whether it will protect public health or cause job losses. Soot, or fine

Comments:
Going for a 15% reduction in soot, at the stroke of a pen. Huge boon to economic activity outside the United States, will increase costs of everything during an undeclared depression. (Unclear whether the EPA-mandated ethanol causes increases in airborne particulate matter; government logic: "crack down" elsewhere.)

Here´s Gulliver fastening himself to the ground, then asking assistance for the few remaining pegs.

EPA should be shut down forever. Most of their orders are nonsense. Think of the money we would save - fewer busybodies.

Obama is quickly eliminating coal as an inexpensive source of energy. Fortunately, natural gas is inexpensive due to increased production from private land. Which means that the EPA will work fiendishly to restrict Nat Gas drilling, since this abundant and clean energy source is undermining solar, wind and other incredibly inefficient sources of part-time energy. Low price Nat Gas also harms the solar / wind companies thaa made generous campaign contributions to Obama.

Are they just calling it generic ´soot´ now, instead of PM2.5?

The structure of the regulatory process defined by the Clean Air Act is for the scientists to define the level of pollutant that is safe and then ensure that the facilities in the counties reduce emissions until the level is met.

The current annual standards date to the Clinton administration in 1997. Did he allow and unsafe level then? Is a 20% reduction now going to make everyone safer now? If you smoke 5 packs of cigarettes a day, will dropping to 4 make you live longer? If you smoked 5 cigarettes a day would decreasing to 4 make you live longer? The answers are no. The level is chosen to cause pain in 1% of the counties in the US. Since industries tend to group that will probably cause pain from 10% of the plants.

As the layers of environmental regulation accrue, their benefits diminish, and their societal and financial costs increase. Society must judge if extending a statistical life span by one day across 10 per cent of the population is worth a thousand jobs, ten thousand jobs, or a million jobs. Just now the persons with the power of that judgement are fanatical fascists through their chain of command. We are past absurdity and nearing irreversibility.

In the sad, limp, America that we are now, I´d ask if this was a result of the EPA ´testing´ people WITHOUT THEIR KNOWLEDGE, by putting them in a room that the EPA funneled diesel exhaust into, but what is the point of that? NO one knows about that, except the North Carolina friends of the court where the EPA and a University are being sued for trying to murder test subjects.

Meet Mr Poo: The lumpy, brown anthropomorphised faeces that is the face of Unicef´s latest public health campaign in India. Accompanied by an insanely catchy techno-Bollywood-style anthem, Mr Poo features in a very silly and surreal new video aimed at raising awareness of the health dangers associated with public defecation in India. Though the video is light-hearted; the issue is a serious one. Globally, India has the largest number of people, more than 620 million, still defecating in the open. Only about half the population of the country use toilets. According to the Poo2Loo campaign, which is supported

Trenton — The law firm hired by Gov. Chris Christie´s office that cleared him and current staff aides of any wrongdoing in the George Washington Bridge scandal donated $10,000 to a national political group the governor currently heads, according to a published report. The Record reported late Tuesday night that Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher gave $10,000 to the Republican Governors Association — nine days before it released a report that cleared the governor in last year´s controversial lane closings at the bridge. Although critics called the report a "whitewash," Christie said the firm´s lawyers have reputations to uphold and wouldn´t

Police are investigating three recent attacks in the city they believe are part of the “knockout" game, in which an unsuspecting person is attacked for no reason with the goal of knocking the person out with one punch. The three attacks this month have occurred in the 700 block of Main Street, the area of 87 Millbury St. and on Chatham near Main Street. (Snip) Police said all three male victims were walking alone when they were approached by a male they did not know. Well it’s official: The cold season of 2013-14 is the snowiest on record for the metro area. The 3.1 inches of snow that fell Monday night into Tuesday morning brought this season’s total to 94.8 inches, topping the old record of 93.6 inches set during 1880-81. (Snip) The normal amount of snow for the metro area is 42.5 inches. Flint also set a record for total snowfall, receiving 83.4 inches this winter, compared to the 82.9 inches set in 1974-75. Neurosurgeon Ben Carson says the White House wanted him to apologize for “offending” President Obama after he famously delivered a conservative message at the National Prayer Breakfast last year. Carson, the former director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, recalls the events surrounding his 2013 speech in his new book, One Nation: What We Can All Do To Save America’s Future. The Daily Caller obtained an advance copy of the book, which is set for release May 20. “He did not appear to be hostile or angry,” Carson writes of Obama, “but within a matter of minutes after the conclusion of

Megyn Kelly’s "Kelly File" is a great news show. She’s incisive, informed and customarily handles the toughest guest with aplomb. But her lengthy interview of Facebook C.O.O. Sheryl Sandberg about her second book in the Lean In series Lean In: For Graduates was a head shaker. Amazing that she of all people allowed Sandberg to restring the same old, same old, shamed, and shopworn feminist myths about women and girls and then jangle it in front of her viewing audience like something new out of the box. Indeed Kelly all but genuflected in front of this woman. Kept her on thru

On Saturday, I wrote about the standoff at Bundy Ranch. That post drew a remarkable amount of traffic, even though, as I wrote then, I had not quite decided what to make of the story. Since then, I have continued to study the facts and have drawn some conclusions. Here they are. First, it must be admitted that legally, Bundy doesn’t have a leg to stand on. The Bureau of Land Management has been charging him grazing fees since the early 1990s, which he has refused to pay. Further, BLM has issued orders limiting the area on which Bundy’s cows can

Although the Civil Rights Act, the landmark legislation which just reached its 50th anniversary, made great strides in desegregating the economy, economic discrimination is still widespread, and anti-discrimination legislation alone can never rectify the economic damage inflicted upon blacks by slavery and our Jim Crow apartheid regime. The Civil Rights Act was a mild reform, all things considered, but one conservatives fought with vigor and one many conservatives are still bitter about to this day. When the Civil Rights Act passed in 1964, the primary purpose was to root out discrimination in public accommodations (like hotels and movie theaters)

Less than a minute into his speech at the Boston marathon bombing memorial on Tuesday, Vice President Joe Biden went tragically off script and told the crowd of Boston bombing survivors that "it was worth it." After expressing how impressed he was with the tribute, he said somberly, "let me say to those ´quote survivors,´ my God, you have survived and you have soared. It was worth it. I mean this sincerely - just to hear each of you speak. You´re truly, truly inspiring." The audience sat in stunned silence until Biden declared, "I´ve never heard anything so beautiful than

Toddlers show racial bias when picking playmates, a study reveals. They also take account of how fairly others behave. Researchers tested the reaction of white 15-month-olds as toys were distributed. Two white adults divided the toys, one equally and the other unequally. Seventy per cent of the toddlers chose to play with the researcher who distributed the toys fairly. But in a second test, when one researcher favoured a white recipient over an Asian one, they picked the ‘fair’ researcher less often, the journal Frontiers in Psychology reports. And the babies are more likely to help those who share the same ethnicity, which is known as

Casual marijuana use may come with some not-so-casual side effects. For the first time ever, researchers at Northwestern University have analyzed the relationship between casual use of marijuana and brain changes – and found that young adults who used cannabis just once or twice a week showed significant abnormalities in two important brain structures. The study’s findings, to be published Wednesday in the Journal of Neuroscience, are similar to those of past research linking chronic, long-term marijuana use with mental illness and changes in brain development. Dr. Hans Breiter, co-senior study author, said he was inspired to look at the effects of casual
