Christmas with Gov. Perry in Austin
PJ Media, by Bryan Preston

Original Article

Posted By:StormCnter, 12/13/2012 5:03:17 PM

This morning I attended an informal holiday reception with Texas Gov. Rick Perry at the governor’s mansion in downtown Austin. Arsonists struck the mansion on the morning of June 8, 2008, with a Molotov cocktail, nearly destroying the iconic structure that has been home to Texas governors since 1856. The crime has never been solved, though the evidence points at anarchists. The state Democratic Party was holding its statewide convention in Austin at the time of the blaze. A little more than four years after the blaze that almost destroyed it, the mansion has been fully restored.

Comments:
We Texans rejoice. Our Governor´s mansion has always been a treasure.

It´s a beautiful house, inside and out, and the decorations are lovely. I´m very glad it wasn´t damaged beyond repair. American architecture of the eighteenth and nineteenth is one of the glories of civilization.

Nice pictorial account.

I scanned through.
Did not see the statue of Johnny Football.
Excuse me, sorry.
Johnny Heisman now.
Used to spell it "Manziel" or similar.

Hope an updated story will tell more about Johnny Heisman.
Who is this Guber Ricky guy?
Got in the way of some photos. Sheesh.

We need to keep our priorities and perspectives in proportion.
Doncha know?
That Cotton Bowl is scheduled for Friday evening, January 4, 2013 btw.
Oklahoma versus Johnny Heisman.

Could be a barnburner.
Tune in.
If we don´t go off the Mayan Cliff or whatever, that is.

Love it! Beautiful home. Beautiful family.

The story about Robbie Cooper bringing his sixth-grade daughter is precious:

~~Upon hearing that the girl had had to bury her dog last night, Gov. Perry took her out to the mansion’s canine graveyard and consoled her for her loss. Most of the rest of the reception’s attendees were in the adjacent room and never noticed that the governor had slipped outside for a few minutes. Her extra credit report should be a good one — she was the only person at the reception to spend a few minutes with Rick Perry being less the governor of a huge state than a dog lover and a father.~~

Obama´s brand of civility.

Ugly violence.

So glad to hear the governor´s mansion has been restored.

Color me an admirer of Rick Perry.

Governor Perry was the Republican candidate I hoped would win the nomination, although I was not too opposed to Romney. Actually I thought a Perry/Romney ticket or a Romney/Perry ticket would be a winner. The unfortunate "senior moment" Perry had in the primary debates sank his candidacy.

I´m glad for him to have such a lovely Governor´s mansion to reside in for a while. I´m sure the Perry´s will take good care of it.

What a lovely home! I was there so long ago I had forgotten. I believe it was a school tour. I like Perry so much. Merry Merry Christmas to the entire lovely family!

The person who was prime suspect of setting the fire was the same Democrat who was planning to set off bombs that would kill people at the GOP convention in Minneapolis.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s nurses admit
it’s hard not to call him ‘hon’

Nurses treating Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev say their natural inclination toward compassion makes it difficult to see the 19-year-old as a possible terrorist. And they have to make concerted effort — and buddy-system pacts — to keep from referring to him with terms of endearment such as “hon.” One 29-year-old nurse said on Gawker: “When you’re in the room, it’s just a patient. You’re here to … make sure they’re feeling better. When you step away, you take it in. I am compassionate, that’s what we do. But should I be? The rest of the world hates him right now.”

The government will use any and all information at its disposal to find journalist sources, as shown in The Washington Post´s report this morning on a Department of Justice investigation into Fox News chief correspondent James Rosen, who may face criminal charges for reporting government secrets. In June 2009, Rosen reported on CIA analysis suggesting that North Korea might respond to new UN sanctions with renewed nuclear tests. In order to determine how Rosen learned of the analysis, which had been issued by the CIA only a few hours prior, FBI investigators used every tool at their disposal: analyzing

Last Thursday, Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA) started a Twitter prairie fire with his call for people to describe #ObamacareInThreeWords. (My contribution was “Sorry, Doctor retired.”) (Snip) The White House, never shy to jump into social media, responded with a flurry of tweets, including “It’s. The. Law.” which smacked, more than anything, of typical Obama chest-thumping. Is the administration sure they want to aggressively take credit for a law which, for almost the entire three years since its passage, has had more Americans supporting its repeal than supporting the law itself and which, according to Rasmussen Reports

Tooth and Nail: Fluoride
Fight Cracks Portland´s Left

PORTLAND, Ore.—In the 1950s, after health authorities began fluoridating U.S. water supplies, they faced opposition from groups like the John Birch Society, which called it "an unconstitutional mass medication of the public." Sixty years later, the fight over fluoridation has erupted in Portland, where the battle has drawn in the city´s craft-beer brewers, organic-food purveyors and environmentalists. Even some of the city´s famed indie-rock musicians are taking sides. The debate has prompted something of an existential crisis in this self-consciously liberal city, which votes Tuesday on whether to overturn the city council´s 2012 decision to fluoridate.

I first saw the headline early Tuesday on Real Clear Politics, a political news site where I generally start my morning. It´s not where I expect to see a story on breast cancer. Then I checked my e-mail messages -- they all seemed to be about Angelina Jolie´s op-ed. Students in my undergraduate class wanted to discuss it in our next session. Colleagues expressed concern and wondered what the right response was. People I don´t even know sent e-mails. One, from a research fellow at the International Agency for Research on Cancer, nicely summed up the general concern:

Three Signs There’s a Cover-Up

The late columnist William Safire once said that a good clue that someone in Washington was engaged in “an artful dodge,” i.e., a cover-up, was that they used the phrase “mistakes were made.” Safire defined it as a “passive-evasive way of acknowledging error while distancing the speaker from responsibility for it.” The phrase became infamous when both Richard Nixon and Ron Ziegler, his press secretary, deployed it to explain away Watergate without explaining who did what and when or whether any ill motive was involved. Astonishingly, the Internal Revenue Service resurrected the Nixonian expression within hours

Just when you think the news surrounding Obamagate cannot get any worse, it does. Some say U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder’s days on the job are numbered and that it’s just a matter of when he’ll be forced to resign. While I’ll not shed a tear over Holder’s departure, one of the replacement names being floated has me reaching for tissues: Gov. Deval Patrick. Patrick has denied he’s interested — but the job isn’t on offer yet. If it is, President Obama should not select him nor should he be confirmed by the Senate for a plethora of reasons.

What did President Obama do on the evening of 9/11/12 when our men were under attack in Benghazi? The invaluable Andrew McCarthy reminds us that Obama and Secretary Clinton had a 10:00 p.m. phone call of which many (including, I think, Chris Wallace) have lost sight. This morning when Wallace asked Obama aide Dan Pfeiffer what Obama was up to that evening, Pfeiffer declared the line of inquiry “offensive.” Translation: Obama and his minions would prefer to “move on” and are warning the likes of FNC off:(Snip for video)The Weekly Standard’s Daniel Halper has posted the rush transcript

WASHINGTON - There were new questions Saturday night concerning if anyone in the White House was aware of the IRS´ targeting of conservative groups. Inspector General Russell George said he informed a deputy at the Treasury Department in June of 2012 about the probe into the IRS. The Treasury Department confirmed the timeline but said they did not know the details of the investigation until last week.(Snip)Marcus Owens ran the tax-exempt division at the IRS for 10 years. WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Serviced scandal today spread further within the White House and closer to President Obama. White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. But he insisted McDonough and the other White House officials purposely kept Obama out of the loop.McDonough “rightly chose not to take action” to inform Obama, Carney told reporters at the daily White House briefing.

The Washington Post on Monday reported that Obama’s Department of Justice was investigating journalists before they started wiretapping the Associated Press – for one, Fox News correspondent James Rosen in 2010. Their headline wasn´t "Obama Team Also Spied on Fox News." Fox wasn´t in the headline, on A-1 or on A-12, where the story continued. Newly obtained court documents “reveal how deeply investigators explored the private communications of a working journalist — and raise the question of how often journalists have been investigated as closely as Rosen was in 2010.” Reporter Ann Marimow began:

A senior adviser to President Obama mounted a combative defense of the administration on Sunday, saying the controversies enveloping the White House were the result of Republican lawmakers’ trying to “drag Washington into a swamp of partisan fishing expeditions, trumped-up hearings and false allegations.”The remarks came from Dan Pfeiffer, a member of the president’s inner circle, as he appeared on all five major Sunday morning talk shows in an effort to move the administration past what commentators have described as a “hell week” of controversy and missteps.
