Committee Approves Rahm´s
Healthier Vending Machines

Mayor Rahm Emanuel´s plan to crack down on the caloric content of city vending machines popped up in Wednesday´s City Council meeting, and aldermen had some heavy concerns. After committee members OK´d the proposed ordinance this week, council members wondered everything from whether the sodium level of drinks would be considered in the plan to if Chicago actually has enough healthy foods to fill the machines according to the mayor´s criteria. Emanuel made the suggestion last month to replace current vending options with healthier items by 2013. Proposed guidelines dictate that only 25 percent of the new machines´

Regulating problems that don´t exist while the city crumbles around him. This racoon faced midget is as bad as Nanny Bloomberg in NYC.

Well done, keep doing nothing and patting yourselves on the back for the non-achievement.

Perhaps the reason that there are not more "healthy" choices in the vending machines currently is because people DON´T BUY THEM.

One really has to wonder what it is that appeals to people to vote for Democrats who want to control every aspect of their lives. Are people really that helpless?

FTA "Emanuel said in the proposal. ´When city employees take their wellness into their own hands...´" Apparently, taking responsibility for your own choices can only be done if government makes you.

Great headline. Who could object. I would hate to buy something from a diseased vending machine.

Perhaps they meant achines that dispense more healthful food products. We´ll have to read the bill to find out for sure what is in it.

If I´m reading the article correctly, "city vending machines" must be those that are available in city facilities, for use by city employees. I s´pose I can´t object too much, if Rahm and his alder boys want to regulate them. If the "healthy" food doesn´t sell... well, welcome to the free market!

By contrast, I believe Nanny Bloomberg is regulating private food choices, in establishments that aren´t municipally-owned. Interfering in free-market economy.

News flash: Fat people know they´re fat (I speak from experience) and don´t need the ballerina to tell us. I heard a radio ad today for the "Just Move" initiative, or whatever it is. It starts out talking about Beauty and the Beast, of all things, saying that Belle learned the important lesson that beauty is on the inside. Then it immediately goes into a spiel about how we need to move 1 hour a day because of the obesity epidemic. Is it just me, or are those contradictory messages? Apparently, fat people are never beautiful, no matter what´s on the inside, at least that´s the message I got. Sheesh.

#6 is correct. These are city vending machines. At city facilities. For city employees and visitors.

OK. Let´s see how long this lasts. If it ever happens, that is.

OP is right. Politicians wasting time and probably money to fix a problem that doesn´t exist.

If Rahm is busy with this vending machine controvsy, he won´t notice all the recent homocides in Chicago. /s

So if one picks a food that isn´t healthy enough for them the machine changes the order to an apple? Or maybe every choice leads to an apple?

This is what he´s worried about? What about the shootings and the record homicide rates among the black population? He must be racist, allowing them to kill, each other off.

Reply 14 - Posted by: kono, 12/13/2012 4:58:08 PM     (No. 9064077)

Do this, and then watch. Bet you ten-to-one that the few candy items in each machine sell-out first, and then remain empty until the healthier food spoils and has to be replaced.

As far as I´m concerned, healthier vending machines are those whose buttons and switches get disinfected more often to reduce transmission of germs.

Reply 15 - Posted by: saguni, 12/13/2012 9:30:27 PM     (No. 9064429)

The company where I worked tried this. They put in a special vending machine, with fresh fruits, milk and juices. The machine was serviced twice a week, watching the sell-by dates on the perishables.

The items were "a little pricey" and people didn´t really want to pay $1.25 for an apple or a half-pint of milk.

They removed the machine within 2 months, because it wasn´t generating any sales.

He also says he isn´t anti-Semitic, citing the fact he´s "never been arrested, not even for spitting on a sidewalk" and has never defaced a synagogue.

Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), the Senate Finance Committee Chairman, predicted in an interview airing Sunday that the scandal surrounding the Internal Revenue Service selectively targeting conservative political groups will grow. “I have a hunch that a lot more is going to come out, frankly,” Baucus told Bloomberg News. “It’s broader than the current focus.” Steven Miller, the acting commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service who was ousted earlier this week, is testifying Friday before the House Ways and Means committee in what is expected to be the first of many congressional grillings over the scandal.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., charged Republicans with “exploiting” the questions surrounding the Benghazi talking points, the AP phone records seizure, and the IRS scandal in order to attack President Obama because “they fear” his agenda and eloquence. “This president — they make so much of these issues because this president is such a great president,” Pelosi told reporters during her weekly press briefing. “They will use talking points on Benghazi, they will use the IRS, they will use AP, as, I think, subterfuges — evasions — of what the American people want us to do.”

Public Policy Polling´s new national survey paints a rather unprecedented picture for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie´s 2016 aspirations -- one that is alternatively beneficial and uncomfortable. According to PPP, Christie earns favorable ratings across political ideologies, something that hasn´t been seen in a potential presidential nominee since Republican John McCain in 2008. Overall, 40 percent of Democrats, 41 percent of Republicans, and 45 percent of Independents view Christie favorably. He is the only potential 2016 candidate who earns favorable views across party lines

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has a personal reason for wanting to ban discrimination in the workplace. "My niece is a lesbian," Reid told the Huffington Post on Wednesday. "She´s a school teacher. Her employment shouldn´t be affected with that. We should have a law that says that, not just the good graces of wherever you work." Reid´s revelation is just the latest example of a member of Congress explaining a personal reason behind a political stance.

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) predicted Thursday that President Obama will renounce his signature healthcare law in the face of mounting conservative opposition to the reform. Bachmann said the ongoing scandal involving the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and challenges in implementing the Affordable Care Act put the law´s survival "back on the table." "The issue is now revived," she said at a press conference. "We believe that the heat will become so hot that even the president of the United States will be forced to repudiate his signature legislation."

Obama administration officials who were in key positions on Sept. 11, 2012, acknowledge that a range of mistakes were made the night of the attacks on the U.S. missions in Benghazi, and in messaging to Congress and the public in the aftermath. The officials spoke to CBS News in a series of interviews and communications under the condition of anonymity so that they could be more frank in their assessments. They do not all agree on the list of mistakes and it's important to note that they universally claim that any errors or missteps did not cost lives and reflect "incompetence rather than malice or cover up.

Watching President Obama trying to dodge raindrops and responsibility yesterday reminded me of the moment when Dorothy pulls back the curtain and discovers that the Wizard of Oz is “just a man.” Stripped of his spell of mystery and power, the wizard is worse than mortal. He’s a fake. So it was with Obama in the Rose Garden. His performance was tired and trite, ordinary to the point of dull. His veneer of passion was so transparent that you could see him trying to summon his old-time magic by pushing the buttons

In the wake of one of the worst abuses of government power in recent history, many are rushing to frame the Internal Revenue Service scandal as simply an attack on conservative activists. That view risks creating a partisan political football and misses a fundamentally scarier abuse that exceeds the scandals of Watergate or any other prior government abuse. The IRS has admitted that since May 2010 it targeted grassroots-conservative organizations that had applied for tax-exempt status, unfairly subjecting them to rigorous scrutiny due to their political leanings. Such groups were told they were required to comply with IRS requests,

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Friday urged congressional leaders to raise the debt limit and insisted that the White House is not going to negotiate over the increase because lawmakers have "no choice." "We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate." Lew said that while President Obama is willing to discuss plans to reduce the nation´s deficit with Congress, those talks must be kept separate from any effort to raise the nation´s debt cap.

The State Department, under Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, created an arrangement for her longtime aide and confidante Huma Abedin to work for private clients as a consultant while serving as a top adviser in the department. Ms. Abedin did not disclose the arrangement — or how much income she earned — on her financial report. It requires officials to make public any significant sources of income. An adviser to Mrs. Clinton, Philippe Reines, said that Ms. Abedin was not obligated to do so. The disclosure of the agreement that Ms. Abedin made with the State Department comes as her husband,

The Internal Revenue Service´s watchdog told top Treasury officials around June 2012 he was investigating allegations the tax agency had targeted conservative groups, for the first time indicating that Obama administration officials were aware of the explosive matter in the midst of the president´s re-election campaign. The disclosure to the Treasury general counsel and the deputy secretary was a cursory one, according to J. Russell George, the Treasury inspector general for tax administration. The lawmaker leading the charge to investigate the Benghazi terror attack on Friday subpoenaed the co-author of a report that slammed the State Department but didn´t interview Hillary Clinton. House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) formally demanded that retired ambassador Thomas Pickering submit to being deposed by the committee next Thursday. The subpoena comes in the wake of a series of acrimonious public exchanges this week between the two men. Issa didn´t issue a subpoena to former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Michael Mullen, who co-authored the Benghazi report with Pickering.
