Printing Weapons

If this bit of information doesn´t offer mixed emotions, nothing will. For those who don´t understand, this technology really exists. It is getting more and more common. The type of 3D printer I have seen in action produces a solid block of plastic, layer by layer. It works like an ink jet printer. Two "inks" are used. One ink is soluble in a solvent, the other isn´t. When you are done printing the block, paper-thin layer by paper-thin layer, embedded in a block of soluble plastic is a complete device in a more substantial plastic.

It´s really 3-D manufacturing. Amazing Jetson-like technology.

First time I saw it was a show about that dummy comedian Jeff Dunham who created a ventriliquist dummy using one - Achmed Jr I believe.

A plastic printed weapon is of more danger to the shooter than to the target.

It would seem that Mr. Gammon does like the idea that an individual citizen can make his own forearm using this new technology. It would also seem that Mr. Gammon does not know that it is quite legal for an individual citizen to make firearms for his own use. Any number of any sort, the only caveat being that firearms capable of self-sustained, fully-automatic fire must be registered with the Department of the Treasury (BATFE) as a Class III firearm.

Within 5 years - 3D printers will be able to turn out MILSPEC weapons.

It will become a crime to own an unregistered printer and print logs will be dumped directly to a federal data base.

Stereo Lithography has been in use for about 3 or more decades. We used it to make prototype plastic intricate assemblies to validate and verify designs befor going to major cost tooling. Too,bone-joints.Once tooling was approved, tens of thousands parts could be precisely manufactured if not more. FRom drawing board/CAD systems to parts. As far as Stereo Lithography its producing high volumes are soon to come. Imagine a stealth bomber, submerseables all unmannned, cheap etc.
And too Housing, Autos, and etc. As many things as the imagination can think of.
The glich...EPA will find a way along with labor unions of carpenters, plumbers, electricicans,glazers,roofers...just name it.
They will lobby to block the use of Stero Lithography, Greenies may be happy because trees will be saved and old plastics can be recycled as they are now. Red Tape will put it a couple centuries off.

It´s baloney until I see a verified video of its being manufactured and fired. And I think it will stay baloney.

Someone get back to me when I can print a primo New York Strip with a Sapphire Gin martini. Guns are already laying around all over the place, but a great steak and a cocktail? Now that´s something worth printing.

Reply 9 - Posted by: jond, 12/13/2012 2:01:24 PM     (No. 9063771)

Its only a matter of time.

Probably less rather than more.

What #2 said. The materials used in 3D printers are fragile and brittle. Anyone planning to shoot a 3D printed gun should update his will first.

Reply 11 - Posted by: Griller1, 12/13/2012 2:45:17 PM     (No. 9063822)

It will fire, but you still have to get the springs, trigger, pins and all of the other materials. Then it will only shoot a few times before it breaks. Pretty expensive for a few rounds and a weapon that is more dangerous to the user than the target.

Reply 12 - Posted by: KTWO, 12/13/2012 3:04:05 PM     (No. 9063843)

Ditto #18. Like it or not.

It is becoming easier and easier to construct nearly everything.

The raw materials you need may not be available; uranium is the most obvious. But plastics aren´t going away.

And the weapon you construct doesn´t have to be durable, maybe it only needs to work once.

Make a gun with a 3d printer? Great, but let´s see you make the ammunition with the printer.

Reply 14 - Posted by: NYbob, 12/13/2012 3:53:19 PM     (No. 9063917)

Mixed emotions? Like laughter or frustration with the sheeple reaction to ANYTHING connected to firearms? The author seems relieved that some arm of the Federal government ´confiscated´ a 3D printer that makes low grade plastic objects. A couple of years ago an Eastman School student was murdered while standing in line for tickets, in the daytime, with a crowd around him. He didn´t hand over something to the usual criminal and was bashed on the head with a piece of broken brick that was lying on the ground. I suppose we could establish a new Federal Police force to patrol ticket sales OR we could encourage people to defend themselves with non lethal or lethal means. It has ALWAYS been that way in human history, but every once in a while some power mad apes want to tell the sheeple apes to follow him and do what ever he says. The sheeple apes still get attacked like before, but now they have the power mad ape´s boot on their throat. As the union thugs have shown, even a box cutter tool can be used to hurt sheeple.

sorry #4 but civilians can not register class 3 weapons any more. Not unless the Feds declare another amnesty period. so currently the number of legal class 3 weapons for civilian ownership is fixed. Of course these regulations do not pertain to the government (federal, state, or local)which may obtain as many as they want. So actually there is a VERY large pool of machine guns out there.

When I arrived home late last night after attending the George Zimmerman trial in Sanford, Florida, I watched the Miami Heat beat the San Antonio Spurs -- great game! -- just as I predicted they would, but it was not until I checked my email inbox that I really began to feel vindicated. First, I was alerted to a series of articles about a new documentary simply titled TWA Flight 800 -- that has the very real potential to reopen the investigation into the destruction of this plane off the coast of Long Island in 1996.

Mary Landrieu last Thursday showed what would be, for many of us, appalling ignorance. Debating against the need to build a fence to keep out illegal immigrants -- a proposal which Landrieu had earlier supported -- the Louisiana senator said to Senator Thune from South Dakota: (snip) "the Senator from South Dakota, who only has a border with Canada that is quite different." Consider just how profoundly ignorant that was for any grownup, to say nothing of a senator who chairs the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee.

As the Washington media continues to trip over the stumbling blocks of administration scandals and echoes of Watergate bounce off the buildings across the Potomac River, the question comes to mind: Will there be impeachment hearings this summer as there were in the Summer of ´73? There may indeed be impeachment hearings this summer, but not for President Obama; we may very well see that the House Judiciary Committee convenes hearings on the impeachment of the Attorney General (AG) Eric Holder.

I caught Sarah Palin on Fox & Friends this morning. Wow, talk about a breath of fresh air! While listening to Palin speak on various issues and Obama´s scandals, something occurred to me. Palin on TV fills a desperately needed void. Sarah Palin communicates in plain English, free of the usual guarded TV political speak. Palin fearlessly nailed Obama and company with the truth. Folks, I cannot express how good and hopeful I felt.

The Consequences of Liberalism

Here we are at the midpoint of the Obama years, assailed on every side by looming consequences of liberal hubris and liberal corruption. But the Obama Scandals don´t get me all riled up with partisan outrage. What´s the surprise? If liberals in the media, in the academy, and in politics stigmatize conservatives as monsters, racists, sexists, homophobes, why be surprised that little Lois Lerner wants to please her teacher? Why wouldn´t the Democrats want to do immigration reform and never mind the consequences to low-paid Americans?

There exists a certain real pathos inherent in the NSA´s PRISM program -- and not only because of its attempt to undermine American principles. PRISM, along with its doubtlessly enormous support structure, is based on a worldview that no longer exists among serious intellects (snip) PRISM is much like the other elements of Barack Obama´s great progressive crusade -- ObamaCare, quantitative easing, green economics -- elaborate and expensive systems apt to cause a lot of misery and waste while accomplishing nothing. Liberals like to boast that they are the rational party. But it´s an obsolete rationality

A group of whistleblowers, including a number of aviation experts, have come forward in a new documentary to claim that the official explanation for the crash of TWA Flight 800 was wrong and a gas tank explosion did not bring down the flight off the coast of Long Island 17 years ago. However, the six whistleblowers, all part of the original investigation team, stopped short of saying the plane was shot down. Flight 800, a Boeing 747, had just taken off from JFK airport with 230 people aboard on July 17, 1996 enroute to Paris when it exploded

An attorney whose firm represents two Benghazi whistleblowers said Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, lied to the Senate when he said there was never a “stand down” order during the Benghazi attack on Sept. 11, 2012. “What was fascinating is that he explained his lie to them,” Joe DiGenova, an attorney representing one of the whistleblowers, told CNSNews.com. “He actually said they were sent to Tripoli. They were needed in Benghazi,” said DiGenova, a former U.S. attorney, now with the Washington firm of DiGenova & Toensing.

Likening religious schools to segregation--a racist system that forced blacks to attend different schools and use different facilities than whites in the American South--President Barack Obama told a town hall meeting for youth in Belfast, Northern Ireland on Monday that there should not be Catholic and Protestant schools because such schools cause division. "Because issues like segregated schools and housing, lack of jobs and opportunity--symbols of history that are a source of pride for some and pain for others--these are not tangential to peace; they’re essential to it,"

Listening to Barack Obama give his speech in Belfast on Monday, it was hard not to stifle a yawn. I kept waiting for the part when he would say something interesting, but, about three quarters of the way through, realised it wasn’t going to come. Judging from television pictures some of his young audience felt the same, after the initial rush of euphoria of receiving the rock star president in their midst had passed. This is not surprising, for we had already heard this number about the inspirational role of the Northern Ireland peace process and the Emerald Isle’s

Celebrity chef Paula Deen admitted in a recorded deposition to telling racist jokes, using the N-word, and planning a slavery-themed wedding, according to multiple reports. The May 17 deposition where she made the alleged admissions is part of a $1.2 million lawsuit brought by Lisa Jackson, the former manager of a Savannah, Georgia, restaurant run by Deen and her brother Bubba Hiers. Jackson alleges in the suit that Deen used the N-word at the restaurant and that Hiers sexually harassed her. According to the reports, in the deposition, Deen replied “Yes, of course,”

Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.

Marco Rubio. Paul Ryan. The IRS. Illegal immigration. And fraud to the tune of billions.. Now there’s a combustible mix. Let’s start with the IRS, illegal immigration and fraud. We’ll come back in a minute to Senator Rubio and Congressman Ryan. For those who came in late, a year before the IRS scandals burst onto the scene in early May of 2013, an alert investigative reporter for WTHR-Indianapolis (Channel 13), Bob Segall by name, produced a stunning piece of journalism. Segall’s video report is found here and we will quote from his story for the basics.
