Who exactly were the rich who, as the president said, were not “paying their fair share”? The rapper Jay-Z (net worth: nearly $500 million)? The actor Johnny Depp (2011 income: $50 million)? Neither seems to have heard the president’s earlier warning that “at a certain point you’ve made enough money.” Could both zillionaires simply have quit making money at $10 million — and thereby given their poorer audiences a break on ticket prices? With all the talk of raising taxes on the supposedly conservative rich who make more than $250,000 per year, why not levy a $3 surcharge

This has nothing to do with money. "The rich" is dog whistle Democrat-speak for "Republican". You are forgiven for being rich-while-Democrat because you "care". But rich-while-Republican will soon be fodder for the gulags, if the "progressives" truly get their way.

How in the world did Obama come up with the idea that $250,000 is rich? If one doesn´t own a business, that amount makes one comfortable and more secure than a day laborer.

If the $250,000 is from owning a small business, it just means the business is a going concern, but it has to keep working hard to maintain that amount in order to cover increasing costs imposed by governments, federal, state, and local, and to pay higher wages to their employees.

The real fat cats are increasingly Democrats, as VDH points out. Republicans need to start and keep pointing out that fact for the next four years.

An education system run by Marxists produces economic illiterates who are taught to despite capitalism. IF we have any hope it will begin with parents correcting this rot and not offering up their kids to the public school system.

Watch out for Buffet too!
He is out there pushing for 55% tax on the dead. Is it just a coincidence that his company sells insurance to cover estate tax, so that family farms and businesses can remain in the families? Without the insurance, families are forced to sell the property to pay the tax!
SO, Buffet´s company sells MORE insurance.
Buffet = commie shyster.

All of these rich fat-cat ´Rats could be paying "their fair share" right now if they wanted to, no tax legislation needed. Just write a check and send it in, the Treasury will cash their check. But they won´t do it. When challenged to do so, Buffett said he would if others did so ahead of him. That must mean he´s trying to be like his Messiah Obama, leading from behind. I have no respect for ´Rats, especially those who won´t walk their talk.

Intead of raising taxes on income, why don´t the Republicans purpose a wealth tax and then watch the Buffet-types start to squeal like stuck pigs.

I don´t know when -- but -- truth always wins out in the end....

BTW -- have you seen all the babawa strident commercials on the television "selling" her new movie --after her retirement? Pretty pathetic..... She´s to busy to clean up the decaying whale on her beach front property -- but she wants YOU (are you listening California?) to pay for it....

What a gal!!

I don´t get the automatic connection of high income with wealth. They are two very different things. One often forgotten fact is that often a high income is a very temporary condition. Look at a salesman who has just had a very good year, or an offensive lineman in the NFL who blows out his knee after his rookie season.

Poster 12 makes a good point. You can have a very high income but not be wealthy, at least not right away. I am thinking of the example of a professional like a doctor who has to pay off significant debt accumulated during their education. Even if they eventually pull down a good salary their disposable income may be limited by their debt, and I see nothing in Oblamer´s proposals that allow "credit" for that. Same with running your own business. Cash inflow may be high but if you plow it back into your business, your take-home pay may not be all that high.

All true, of course. Some animals are more equal than others. Only one problem with VDH´s piece: it failed to explain what Jay-Z has ever done, of any significance, to bring in those bucks. I cannot name any of his songs and I would not look out the window if he was performing in my front yard. The Slimes used to have an ad, labeling him a ´mogul´ and saying that if you read the Slimes you would be communing with such ´moguls´. If Jay-Z is the Slimes´ idea of a mogul, what hope is there for civilization?

Great article. I especially liked the part about affirmative action for the kids of millionaires like Holder and Susan Rice. AA has been a scam forever, benefiting the wealthy and politically connected (Mooch and O, for instance), not the kids of color who don´t finish high school much less have a chance to go to Princeton and Columbia. Much less the poor white kids who don´t qualify by virtue of their pale heritage.

Poster 9 has the right idea. Forget about income, just tax wealth. These ´Rats want a European model, that is it. Don´t just tax income, tax total wealth. And not just once, do it every year. So people like Buffett and Gates and Streisand and Immelt will have to pay a tax on their possessions as well as income. Go after their mansions and cars and private jets and vacation homes. And no shielding of those things by transferring their ownership to others. And no writing off of debt, either. Those people own all those nice things, tax them on the value of those things. If Obama were really serious about going after "the rich", he´d go after the things they own, not just their incomes. But he won´t, because too many fat-cat ´Rats would get gorted.

Very Good Point #14. I have a very good friend who is a chiropractor and pays--among other taxes--for malpractice insurance. At one time he had a fairly nice office but now he has had to move into a much smaller and affordable space and has had to have another chiropractor partner with him so that he can pay his bills; rent, etc.

Kudos to #14! My husband and I are both dentists, and I often hear from people how "lucky" we are because we "must be swimming in money". They don´t know that the monthly payment on our student loans and practice loan is nearly $14,000/mo (yes, that´s thousand, not hundred). That´s not even counting insurance, mortgage, taxes, etc. But Obama thinks we´re "rich"

Victor Davis Hanson, as good as he is, does not come out with the obvious: it´s all about creeping communism, the Marxian dogma of class distinction, class warfare, anything to create chaos between peaceful people. The rich vs the poor promoters do not have to belong to the American Communist Party to continue to promote the Party Line. All any good person has to do is go back to the 50´s when Communism was openly discussed and resisted. Later came, the horrors of Stalin´s Soviet terror, the Gulag slave camps, then it all went silent for many decades while communism advanced under cover of the misused word, liberalism.
Go back, read Cleon Skousen´s THE NAKED cOMMUNIST, before that just look him up on Google and see his incredible list outlining
almost 50 signes of Communism. Right there on Google, then read the book if you care.
You´ll never learn about it from Diane Sawyer and all those TV liars.

The ironic thing is that they are NOT liberal. They are leftists which are very anti-liberal. The word liberal in the 20th Century and forward has been used by leftists to mislead people into believing they support equality and freedom. But in truth, it is the conservatives (another somewhat misnomer) that truly believe in freedom and true equality under the law. Conservatives today are the ones who are truly liberal in the classic sense of the word--just as our Founders were.

#21 has an excellent point. As I have said before...politics is all about perception. Unfortunately, there is no one in the GOP ranks that understands the art of words. The Dems, on the other hand, are master manipulators. The GOP is defending "rich" people. They are not smart enough to define the real problem and to explain why the tax scheme is detrimental. So, the left wins again through their masterful manipulative marketing to define the GOP as the party for rich elites (when the opposite is true) and the stupid GOP backs up their projected view by not knowing how to properly counter the debate. Why are all the intelligent debaters for the right out here in the real world with little or no voice while the tongue-tied idiots are in office?

Obama IS talking about taxing Net Worth... then applying it to wages. The $250k won´t be based on salary but on the value of what you own.

Essentially, someone making $40k a yr could be taxed at the millionaire rate because he owns a home!

And guess who´s re-defining the value of what you own? A WH CZar! Yes!!! They will calculate the Best Use Value of your property.. not the market value!

Obozo is trying to achieve the Marxist/Sharia Law of no private property ownership.. the mrtg aid has transferred low end homeowners to ObamaLoans... taxes will force the middle class to only afford renting.

Relative to Rich Dems... Just like ObieCare, there will be handpicked Friends O Barry that will be exempt... ie., GE pays no taxes.

#22, your point is well taken. The other thing that the Leftists never note is that people like you and your husband, and a sibling of mine who is a doctor, worked and studied very hard for many years to even get to where you are now.

My doctor relative, the child of a housewife and a blue-collar dad who barely made ends meet, earned scholarships and took loans to get their education, which took a total of 22 years from kindergarten through graduating from med school. Rarely were they free for socializing--there was always school work to do.

Then years of paying back school loans, practice loans, and finally, twenty years out, loans paid, making a comfortable--not wealthy--living. Just in time to start paying for their own children´s college.

To Obama, that´s the undeserving fat-cat rich, who should be paying their fair share.

At a secret February ceremony at CIA headquarters in Langley, Va., the chief of the CIA’s base in Benghazi the night of the 9/11 anniversary attacks there was awarded one of the agency’s highest intelligence medals, according to U.S. military and intelligence officials. The honor given behind closed doors to “Bob,” the officer who was in charge of the Benghazi intelligence annex and CIA base that was attacked in the early morning of September 12, 2012 and then abandoned for nearly three weeks, illustrates the murky lines of command that preceded the attack, and helped make it a politically volatile issue.

The Senate on Monday opened debate on a $955 billion farm bill that would reduce federal spending by as much as $23 billion over the next 10 years by cutting funding for food stamps and eliminating some farm-support programs. "This legislation will create jobs, cut taxpayer subsidies and reduce the deficit," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said Monday. The White House offered only conditional support for the bill, an indication that lawmakers will need to make changes to win the president´s signature. The Obama administration in April called for a 3 percent reduction in the nation´s crop insurance program,

Journalists are understandably alarmed by the revelation that President Barack Obama´s Justice Department targeted Fox News reporter James Rosen during a leak investigation of a State Department employee. The news, reported by the Washington Post late Sunday night, reveals that the Obama administration will apparently stop at nothing to track down whistle-blowers who leak classified information. In Rosen´s case, that included implicating him as a "criminal co-conspirator" whose actions were punishable with up to 10 years in prison. While it is not uncommon for the government to investigate leaks, it is unprecedented for a journalist

But I also think that some day historians will pore over his many speeches to black audiences. They will see a president who sought to hold black people accountable for their communities, but was disdainful of those who looked at him and sought the same.

The Democratic candidates for mayor in New York are campaigning to win the support of the teachers union. They threaten to return the city to the horrors of the David Dinkins era. Back at the turn of the 1990s, New York City was a mess. Crime was rampant. The schools were dreadful. Children in foster care were brutalized because–as the head of the Child Welfare Agency said–”oversight is racist.” The mayor was an incompetent. What did President Obama do on the evening of 9/11/12 when our men were under attack in Benghazi? The invaluable Andrew McCarthy reminds us that Obama and Secretary Clinton had a 10:00 p.m. phone call of which many (including, I think, Chris Wallace) have lost sight. This morning when Wallace asked Obama aide Dan Pfeiffer what Obama was up to that evening, Pfeiffer declared the line of inquiry “offensive.” Translation: Obama and his minions would prefer to “move on” and are warning the likes of FNC off:(Snip for video)The Weekly Standard’s Daniel Halper has posted the rush transcript
