| Ambling through a museum exhibition is a favorite pastime of CultureMappers. We appreciate art, the quiet introspection of looking at works crafted hundreds of years ago and imagining the back stories of the characters, subjects and locations of yesteryear. Though some paintings may look a tad formal, there´s always a juicy tale behind each priceless artifact. As Portrait of Spain: Masterpieces from the Prado prepares to open on Dec. 16 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, we wandered with Edgar Peters Bowron, the Audrey Jones Beck Curator of European Art,

How utterly beautiful!! I have a reproduction of the Immaculate Conception by Murillo on my wall. Compare this with what art is today.
We have sunk very low.

Very Nice, OP, what a nice way to start my day. The Prado is truly magnificent but since I only have one lifetime, I only have time for the Louvre. The first time I visited the Louvre with my wife, the guards had to chase us out when they closed - and we arrived at 10AM.
The Prado and the Louvre have many free, on-line virtual tours available which are great for those of us who live far away. Just Google "Louvre (or Prado) virtual tours."

The writer seems bumfuzzled by the monkeys in the servants´ arms. Those would have been pets of her royal mistress. European royals had menageries of exotic animals.

Many years ago I took my teenage sons to the Prado They thought most of the art was boring, but were fascinated by the extensive collection of Goya´s Black Paintings. My older son spent the better part of a half hour studying Hieronymus Bosch´s triptych Garden of Earthly Delights. Contemporary special-effects-laden horror movies can´t hold a candle to these masterpieces.
A visit to The Prado should be on everyone´s bucket list. A side trip to the Reina Sofía Museum to see Picasso´s Guernica is also a must.

I spent my junior year of college in Madrid. We had an art history class that met once a week in the Prado. Just an amazing time -- I look back on those months and realize how wonderful they were and feel lucky that I was able to experience it.

George H.W. Bush sure does get around. The former president was on hand Wednesday night when the new 2013-2014 Houston Texans Cheerleaders squad was announced — and he looked mighty pleased to be there. Bush, a close friend of Texans owner Bob McNair, sported a big grin as he presented each of the 35 cheerleaders with a red rose and thanked the squadmembers who visited him during his extended hospital stay late last year. Roberts Elementary recently welcomed new neighbors when a parliament of baby owlets and their mom (or dad) nested up in a tree outside of the Texas Medical Center-area campus. They must have taken a few wrong turns on the way to nearby Rice University. CultureMap reader Annie Kansas brought her camera along in the carpool line and snapped a few portraits of the new family, which has been "creating lots of excitement" among teachers and students at the school.

In the not-so-distant past, the 1994 American-French film Stargate spawned a television series, comics and video games and ran over and over again on some network akin to Lifetime, on a kind of channel you tuned to when nothing better is on. A lawsuit filed last week in Harris County claims the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People did not pay its bill at the downtown Houston Four Seasons Hotel for its 103rd Annual Convention in July. The hotel claims it is owed $99,500 for room, banquet and finance charges. The convention, most notably recognized by national media as the event where Republican White House hopeful Mitt Romney drew loud boos for his health care reform views, was held July 11 at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

In college football, the only time it pays to be No. 1 in January is when the final polls of the season are released. But the Texas A&M Aggies are certainly abuzz, thanks to CBSSports.com’s Dennis Dodd. On Tuesday, Dodd released his 2013 preseason power poll. Never mind that the college football season doesn’t start for eight months. He has the Aggies as his No. 1 team. Yes, Texas A&M. Even though Alabama won the national title and proved that they reload in Tuscaloosa, not rebuild.

Eva Longoria is backing up her beauty with a whole lot of brain. The actress graduated with a master´s degree Wednesday. Longoria, 38, took home a real degree (not an honorary one) in Chicano studies from Cal State Northridge, where she physically attended classes for three years, according to TMZ. "Big day today!!! Very excited to graduate for my master´s degree in Chicano studies! What´s so interesting about 60 tea partiers protesting the IRS in San Jose, California on Tuesday, May 21st? The fact that this bit of information was conveyed to the protesters by a Department of Homeland Security officer who was also in attendance. What was a DHS agent doing at the San Jose Tea Party protest? (snip) they weren´t just spying on us in San Jose and monitoring us in San Francisco, they were watching us throughout the entire state

On “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Barack Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said embattled IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights and will be hauled back to appear before his panel again. The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”

President Obama on Thursday nominated Victoria Nuland, a State Department official involved in the editing of the administration´s talking points on Benghazi, to be the next assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs.
