| Los Angeles - Sitarist and composer Ravi Shankar, who helped introduce the sitar to the Western world through his collaborations with The Beatles, died near his home in Southern California on Tuesday, his family said. He was 92. Shankar, a three-time Grammy winner with legendary appearances at the 1967 Monterey Festival and Woodstock, had been in fragile health for several years and last Thursday underwent surgery, his family said in a statement. Norah Jones father. Norah went to university here in North Texas and is a major musical talent in her own right.

I saw him perform when I was in college at the University of Maryland. He was part of that special ´hippie´ time in my life.
He was Norah Jones´ father?! Wow.

An enduring standard of eastern music. He lived in Encinitas, CA, not far at all from where I call home. I was present when Anoushka played sitar in the world-premier of Ravi´s "Symphony for Sitar and Orchestra" at the Copley Tower´s Symphony Hall in San Diego. I always marveled in knowing a living legend was close by. Now that legend will continue living in my heart.

He was incredible. And it was clear from the first that Norah had inherited her father´s music genes. (My favorite Norah Jones song is "America") 92...what a good long life.

At the risk of being selfish, I wish George Harrison hadn´t fallen under his spell and shoehorned the sitar into several Beatles albums.

Many years ago I was up at Tanglewood in the Berkshires. My friend and I wandered around loving the scenery and watching the people who were all well dressed, very clean and full of energy. We listened to the orchestra practicing for that evening´s concert and it was beautiful, soaring music.
Then we heard that just down the road, Shankar was performing. Popped in the car and drove down to a scene that was very unappealing. Dirty, slovenly people lolling about, cursing and swearing, and a strange smell in the air. The music was awful. What a contrast in a matter of a few hours.

Shankar "fathered" Norah Jones, but within two years he also "fathered" Anoushka, then married her mother and Anoushka became his "musical heir".
I am glad that Norah Jones´s musical ability has brought her fame and fortune. She is a lovely and talented young woman who, mercifully, does not play the sitar.

Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.
