| Scientists may have finally solved the puzzle of what makes a person gay, and how it is passed from parents to their children. A group of scientists suggested Tuesday that homosexuals get that trait from their opposite-sex parents: A lesbian will almost always get the trait from her father, while a gay man will get the trait from his mother. The hereditary link of homosexuality has long been established, but scientists knew it was not a strictly genetic link, because there are many pairs of identical twins who have differing sexualities.

This article doesn´t exactly give the answer to why people are gay. For one thing, not all gay people are "feminized" or masculinized." I think it´s probably a combination of factors. Whatever the cause, homosexual behavior is still a choice.

I´ll just add that Paul, in the Bible, discusses homosexuality and never says it is unnatural...rather he says that God gave them up to their natural desires to lust for one another. The purpose of Christ is to turn us from the natural to the spiritual, to turn us from what we would like to do toward what He will have us do.
Just a thought.

Oh, really? I have been following this issue for a very, very long time and have seen much speculation and many assertions of "heredity", but never any true evidence/proof. In the real world mere assertion and conjecture do not constitute fact.

Let´s consider this possibility. Let´s say that there is a test early on in the pregnancy that identifies the sex of the foetus. And if I understand these scientists, it would be possible to put the appropriate hormone into the foetus to make sure they stay on track - straight if you will. Would the homosexual rights groups go insane with such a treatment? Hasn´t California passed a law making it illegal for psychologists to treat homosexuals who want to go straight? And aren´t there deaf rights groups who are against those implants to restore hearing? Who are against lip reading instead of sigh language?? This could become interesting. Especially with the capacity now of surgeons who can perform heart surgery on baby still in the uterus. Hormone therapy would be simple compared to that...

I read an article by a genetic researcher back in the 80´s, who agrees with you. He said people are born gay just as people are born blind or without limbs. Homosexuality, at least for some, is a birth defect that (according to him) can be cured in the womb.
Gays were predictably outraged at his claims.

There is no link to an actual paper, just a link to a PR release that links to another PR release about an article not linked, so whether this is pure speculation or there is even a tad of actual science behind it remains unknown.
The speculation regards extra-genetic trait passing, which is seeming increasingly likely but has not yet been established anywhere that I am aware of.

It is the dream of homosexual activists that they can prove homosexuality is genetic not behavioral. This article at the root says it is not genetic (otherwise identical twins would either both be gay or both straight). So, by wish, it is quasi-genetic with hand-waving.

If being homo is genetic and the genetic defect is found, most homos will immediately become pro-life.
If being homo is a learned trait, their quest for special privileges disintegrates.
We can cure homosexuality in our lifetime!

The varieties of human behavior are infinitly variable, and perhaps a small number of gays are born that way. But for the most part, I think there is a simpler explanation. It´s a vice. Certain young men are attracted to the lifestyle: the parties, the poppers, the gay bars, the parades and display, the bathhouse scene, the glory holes. If you are gay you have a built in advantage in certain professions, like fashion, theater, cinema, set design etc. When young boys in their early adolescence are so horny and don´t know what to do about it, they are prey to older guys who will give them sex... of a sort, and they get a taste for it. After that it is all about networking and group behavior reinforcement. Hence gay neighborhoods like the Castro in San Francisco, and West Hollywood, where peer pressure can be hard to resist. As for women, I don´t know what drives them into homosexuality. Probably just a series of bad relationships with men who turn out to be creeps.

I have always said this. Don´t hate them. They are born that way and have no more choice in the matter than you or I. Everything is as it should be. We don´t have to like it but there are few who get everything their own way. Even scripture has been corrupted through time. Odds are if something in your religion seems kind of off or wrong it IS wrong. God has at least as much moral sense as a human being. An immortal doesn´t want the same things we do. God has no desire to torture any soul for eternity. We do not have enough power to do anything to merit a punishment on that kind of scale.

God puts the facts out there. He then allows us to chose how we will spend eternity.
Most people have some desires that aren´t considered ´´normal´´ by regular society. What seperates us from the animals is that God granted us the knowledge to know right and wrong, and chose to give in to sick and perverse desires or not. And, for any number of reasons, most of us chose not to give into those sick and perverse desires.
We can´t control our feelings and desires, but we sure as Hell can control our actions!!!
Many homosexuals do chose to give in to their perverse desires. If they are going to end up suffering for all eternity, they made that choice today (as we all do -- though I chose to serve God again today).

Look no further #2 & #7 and anyone still trying to figure out why people are born conservative or liberal, because in Act II of Gilbert & Sullivan´s politically incorrect operetta "Iolanthe," Pvt. Willis sings "That every little boy and every little girl that´s born into the world alive; is either a little Lib-eral or else a little Con-ser-va-tive. Fa, la la." And knowing this to be true, Queen Victoria laugher her head off and knighted them.

It´s always been obvious some are. It´s just as obvious some make a choice. There are no absolutes on the matter. As a result, no political agendas have final say. One wonders, if the trait were identifiable and controllable in the womb, how many would opt for change.

in my long experience as a dept. of social services social worker, i found (anecdotal, admittedly) that many children who have been sexually abused often are gay later in life. i could go on and on about this but through my work experience i believe that some people are born gay, some people are made gay by sexual abuse and some choose the gay lifestyle. i have only found that women choose the gay life style and of the two sexes, women are the only ones who go back and forth. one year they are gay, ten years later, find a great guy, marry him and are straight. then, some, after marrying the great guy, go back to women but not always. humans are strange and we can´t possibly understand everything about all of us.

FTA, homosexuality is common in the animal world. I can attest to this. In my cattle herd, we occasionally get a gay bull-he just won´t cover his assigned cows and wants to get back into the bull pasture. Unlike the human herd, we don´t spend a lot of time trying to get him to change his mind. We just turn him into hamburger. #37, I take your point about women switching back and forth. Ann Heche comes to mind.

Two of my father´s brothers lived and farmed together all their lives. My mother´s brother went to university about 15 miles from their farm, and claimed my other two uncles were a "case study" in his psychology class. However, one of my slightly older female cousins warned me not to be alone with one of those uncles, because he had molested her.
That same maternal uncle claimed he had been "normal" until he was molested by a "church deacon" when he was 11, then he turned gay.
I say claimed because that uncle said a lot when the day was long.
He also said, "Some are born that way, some are made so by other men, and some choose the lifestyle."

#29, did you decide to like girls when you were 13 to benefit your future career? Do you see how wacky that is? On what date did you decide to like girls? The idea that being gay -- at least for men -- is a choice is just stupid.
There are way too many people on this thread who are suspiciously interested in this subject. Spending a lot of time thinking about other people´s sex lives is creepy. What you do in your bedroom is your business as long as everyone agrees and nobody dies. Meanwhile, our country is going to h-e-double hockey sticks on a sled. Who cares about all this other stuff?

We all live in service to posterity.
The conscious part of our minds hasn´t got a clue in matters of ´preference´.
To answer Prof. Henry Higgins central question:"Why can´t a woman be more like a man?" It appears that the answer is:"Just get a man".
The whole business is much less important than it is made out to be.
Mostly...be nice , take care of each other.

#45 -- We care about the subject b/c it is constantly thrust upon us (no pun intended). And, because we are told that because one group feels "naturally" a certain way about another group, they should be afforded certain rights and privileges. Redefining marriage in America is a pretty big deal, so yes, we care.
Just wondering out loud here, but what´s going to happen when we find a gene that shows that certain people have a pedophilia gene? Or, what about people who love their children or siblings so much, they must sleep with them -- even when the 2 people are consenting adults? It´s a slippery slope.

I think #37 is on to something. I have had similar experiences. Many gay people I´ve known were victims of early sexual abuse.
One gay abuse victim who worked with other abuse victims theorized that gayness was a form of dissociative behavior. She noticed that all multiple personality people always had a personality of the opposite sex. This would be something to look into, but I´m not holding my breath.

In Romans 1:25-27, St. Paul wrote, “… they (women and men) … exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones …” St. Paul also wrote in 1 Corinthians 6:10 that “… men who have sex with men … will (not) inherit the kingdom of God.” In Leviticus 18:22, Moses wrote, “Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.”

What malarkey. The gay people I know have gays only on their SAME-SEX parent´s side of the family. Also, outside of GLBT sites, I´ve never seen a legitimate link proven about the genetic factors of homosexuality. The only serious work I´ve seen hints that younger siblings in multi-sibling families tend to have a higher rate of becoming active homosexuals. The researcher in question felt that the societal influence of older siblings stunted the child´s development. But I suppose that would be politically incorrect.
I would not trust anything publicized these days as science, as anything more than political trash. People like the NASA jerk and the hockey-stick man have cost science tons of credibility.

No baby is born gay, or even hetero, for that matter. They are asexual.
Social patterning, along with a natural desire for the opposite of ourselves, causes our sexuality to develop. Some genetic factors & sometimes hormone imbalances, play into this, as a feminine male or masculine female may find themselves attracted to their own sex that is more the opposite of them. Hatred for the opposite sex can occur from abuse/abandonment, as well as bonding with the opposite sex parent can cause emulation of that sex. Which is where the dna patterning comes in with this group of scientific studies.
I know I´m over-simplifying, but there is no gay gene. Artistic, analytic genes, yes. Homosexuality also is not a choice (unless some rebellious young adult wants to follow a fad for awhile). It becomes a hard-wired attraction that goes deep. It can be altered, if the person wants to do behavior modification, but the attraction will always be there. Those persons can & do develop sexual feelings for the opposite sex as they do the work required. So they, in essence, become bisexual.

Whatever the reason, it exists innately. People need to understand this and move on. Moralizing about something that exists innately simply leads to an argument that goes nowhere.
I´m not saying that people shouldn´t discuss this issue at the level of behavior. I think it´s legitimate to discuss it from the angle of promiscuity and the need to reduce this promiscuity. However, to agonize over why certain feelings exist is a ridiculously expensive way of conducting oneself. Liberals love it whenever conservatives make this expensive mistake.

Poster #57, those strict laws were written for the "dunder heads" Isralites who were a stubborn bunch and so the priests issued all those rules to try and keep them in line. When Jesus came, He did away with all of them and encouraged only Moses´/God´s Ten Commandments. The Bible can be very confusing and is that way, I believe, to make serious folks search for truth. I believe no one is born to be a homosexual, but his/her environment shapes the sexual desire. A righteous God would never condemn something that that person could not help! Say what you will, it will never be accurately proven that one is born gay. On the other hand, there are many straight folks who were "delivered" from homosexuality. We should hate no one and realize that all of us have sinned and need to be more tolerant.

#49 -- Here´s what i´m referencing as well:
Romans: 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.
26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.
28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done.
-- as I´m reading this...God gave them over to their sinful nature, which is the "natural" state for humankind.

All a big deal over nothing. I have known many gay people who are just like every other person - they make a life, obey the law, have the same worries and goals as everyone else. It is when the radical elements of "gayism" get in your face and start their drive to "victim-hood" that the problems arise. They should study why some gay people want to become victims.

DENVER — Because of a paperwork error, the suspect in last month´s killing of Colorado´s corrections chief was freed from prison in January — four years earlier than authorities intended. Judicial officials acknowledged Monday that Evan Spencer Ebel´s previous felony conviction had been inaccurately recorded and his release was a mistake. In 2008, Ebel pleaded guilty in rural Fremont County to assaulting a prison officer. In the plea deal, Ebel was to be sentenced to up to four additional years in prison, to be served after he completed the eight-year sentence that put him behind bars in 2005, according to a statement from Colorado's 11th Judicial District.

The wheels came off the Obama administration yesterday. We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). The leak was called “egregious.”

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor 3rd. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight committee Wednesday.

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose career in public life came to an abrupt end when he sent lewd pictures to a college student on Twitter, jumped back into politics on Wednesday by announcing a bid for mayor of New York City. “Look, I’ve made some big mistakes and I know I’ve let a lot of people down,” the Democrat said in a 2-minute video announcing his bid. “But I’ve also learned some tough lessons. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

Former Democratic National committee chairman Howard Dean considers the controversy over Benghazi a “joke” and “silly.” “Benghazi is a laughable joke,” Dean proclaimed twice in a discussion with Republican National Committee communications chairman Sean Spicer last week. “With all due respect, governor, when four Americans die serving this country, that’s not a joke, sir,” Spicer responded. “Oh, stop it,” said Dean. The former Democratic presidential candidate also said that there were “no serious questions being asked about Benghazi” and brushed it off as an effort by Republicans to score political points.
