In an interview with ABC News´s Christiane Amanpour, Mr Ballard explains that he investigated a theory proposed by two scientists from Columbia University that there was a massive flood in the Black Sea region. They believe that the Black Sea was once an isolated freshwater lake surrounded by farmland until it was flooded by a torrent of water. "We went in there to look for the flood," he told ABC News. "Not just a slow moving, advancing rise of sea level, but a really big flood that then stayed ... The land that went under stayed under."
There was a professor who was making fun of the Passage in the Bible about the Israelites crossing the Red Sea. He said that the water was just low allowing them to cross. A student in the class stood up and said, "Wow, that is a greater miracle than I thought. Imagine all those Egyptian soldiers drowning in only 3 feet of water"!
The Black Sea flood idea has been around for decades. Ballard may have fournd new supporting evidence or arguments. If so we will know soon enough.
Headline sums it up. ´May have´
The massive flood first requires a large area well below sea level that is not filled with fresh water. But several large rivers empty into the Black Sea. So why wouldn´t they have already filled it and made a massive lake?
A determined person can keep working around every objection but I don´t buy it. Open to actual evidence..
All societies have flood stories that reduce the population down to either one family or two people. With that amount of data a thinking person would believe there is truth in those stories, since they are world wide. There is a website that shows the flood story in chineese charactors which is very interesting.
A person determined to deny Noah´s flood will, of course, find evidence to deny such an unprecedented event. There is evidence for such a flood if one wants to think about it.
There is much in the news about shale gas. This gas is found in the Utica Shale at a depth around 8000´. Such a depth of black shale buried so deep required an unusual event. We consider that gas shale is black carbonaceous shale made of mud and presumably vegetable matter that hardened into rock buried under thousands of feet of other kinds of shale, sandstone, limestone and dolomite, layers that do not contain vegetable matter.
How do these layers sort out the vegetable matter if laid down over billions of years? There is no plausible explanation.
Now this week we see the politicians, always the last to know the obvious, beginning to realize that gas shale is found in Britain in abundance, in Africa, in Poland, in China in fact....pretty much everywhere serious people have bothered to look.
The Flood provides an explanation that accounts for the "sorting" of the vegetable matter out of the mud that is not...not... found in such abundance in the grey and red shales above the Utica, Marcellus, Bakken, Eagle Ford, etc., type formations.
This black carbonaceous mud shale was laid down at the same time.
I believe that time was just as the Bible says it was, and believe that Ballard is just starting to catch on.
I like to think it happened at least 15,000 years ago and maybe a lot longer, when the Straits of Gibralter opened up and flooded the Mediterranean for the first time - which also did happen in real life ... except doing a quick Google, apparently they now say it happened 5,000,000 years ago when even the chimps had not yet evolved. Oh well.
Even if it was just the Black Sea and happened in historic times, maybe Noah saw it happening (the voice of God having many forms), and rather than move away as a prudent person would, he built a boat. Maybe a humongous storm like Sandy only moreso, finally triggered what had been developing for centuries.
OK, not quite the Biblical version, but certainly a story with telling, sort of like the guy who tied the weather balloons to his lawn chair and went flying, only with livestock.
#8 ~ Ha ha ~ Great Post !!! Man just hates it when he is not #1 being on the Universe ~ but then how did all this get here ? The big bang is such a big farce ~ something from nothing ~ it could happen ~ NOT ~ for you Atheists out there ~ I call the Creator ~ GOD ~ you can call the Creator ~ Captain Universe !
#15, your original estimate of the Great Flood happening about 12 to 15 thousand years ago, might be correct. I saw a show awhile ago, where it was postulated that Noah´s Flood occurred when the Straits of Bosporus were smaller than today and only let a trickle of water through. The level of the Black Sea was much lower then it is today, until an earthquake in the region ´open´ the Straits and the whole area was flooded. People who lived along the shores were either wiped out or rode it out and any boats they had. Evidence of the event and habitation was found and presented.
Yep the land barrier between the Med and what is now the Black Sea gave way and flooded the entire region. They have found numerous villages and other remains at the bottom of the Black Sea that had artifacts that were carbon dated to the time.
I could say I was there on the mountain top watching but no one believes I lived that long ago...I was in my third life of 43 at the time. If you believe that I have some water front land to sell you in Louisiana!
This is old news. The Telegraph just picked up what the geological journals have been discussing for years. There is one big hole in this idea. Even today the Black Sea is a net source of water draining out to the Mediterranean. Five major European rivers discharge in the Black Sea (the Danube, Don, Dniester, Dniepr, and Southern Bug). At the end of the last ice age, the Caspian and Aral Seas were so large that they merged, the Caspian extended far up the Volga valley, all the rivers had larger flows, and for a time the Volga drained into the Don through the lowlands where they later dug the Volga-Don Canal. I can see the Black Sea breaking out and flooding the eastern Mediterranean area, but it is hard to believe the water would flow uphill into the Black Sea. However, it is easy to accept the idea that the Bosporus could have been opened by an earthquake. The flood would have devastated the area around the Sea of Marmara and the Aegean. That is a very seismically active area. Those submerged towns they found in northern Turkey were probably dropped below sea level through subsidence in the North Anatolian Fault zone.
"The Earth" wasn´t completely covered with water at any point. But a lot of areas that are now dry land were once covered with water. Any mountains you see that are made of limestone, dolomite, mudstone, argillite and many kinds of sandstone are made of rock that formed underwater before seismic uplift raised them.
Awww Modern Darwin catches up with the Bible. How about the 12 to 15 thousand years ago ending of the last ice age with flooding remembered in every culture. Oh I forgot according to some beliefs the Earth is only 4 to 5 thousand years old.
Seems logical that people who think religious people are deluded would be indifferent or even feel some compassion for their ´confusion,´ but instead they really, really, hate anyone with faith in anything greater than other smug humans. I´ll let zealots argue about the ´accuracy´ of the accumulated and translated words of whatever Bible you are talking about. While they do that I still admire the fact that without ANY knowledge of atomic structures, astronomy, or modern science the authors of the Bible still knew you and I are composed of matter born in stars. ´Dust to dust.´
Approximately 800 school children waving American flags greeted the Wreaths Across America convoy at their school on Wednesday in Middletown, N.J., for a wreath laying ceremony and tribute honoring World War II veterans who fought in the Battle of the Bulge. The WAA caravan included over 10 trailer trucks filled with wreaths. The group is laying wreaths to honor and remember the country’s veterans during its weeklong journey, which began in Maine on Dec. 7. Its final stop will be at Arlington National Cemetery on Dec. 14, where at least 100,000 wreaths will be laid on the graves of veterans.
(Video) Speaker John Boehner´s (R-Ohio) outburst Thursday at outside conservative groups is going viral on the Internet. Boehner voiced incredulity Thursday that the same groups that pushed Republicans to shut down the government later said they knew the strategy wouldn´t succeed in defunding ObamaCare. “Are you kidding me?!” Boehner exclaimed at the GOP´s press conference at the Capitol. It’s the second day in a row Boehner has criticized the groups. People began tweeting that Boehner’s outburst would make a good Gif.
"The Price Is Right" host Bob Barker is endorsing lobbyist David Jolly, one of two Republicans vying for deceased Rep. Bill Young´s (R-Fla.) seat. Barker makes the endorsement in a new campaign ad that will run during a special "The Price Is Right" episode on Thursday. The ad could help Jolly win over perhaps the key demographic in the GOP primary race: seniors. According to National Journal´s Almanac of American Politics, more than a fifth of Young´s district is over 64 — the target demographic for "The Price Is Right." The ad is set to run Thursday as Barker makes a
Paul Ryan wants everyone in D.C. to remember the Rolling Stones. “There’s this older British guy who says ‘you can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you just might find, you get what you need,” he said on Thursday’s Morning Joe with a smile. Ryan is fighting for the budget he negotiated with Washington’s Sen. Patty Murray (D), but not everyone is happy. Major tea party-allied groups came out in advance of the deal to condemn it. Tea party darlings Sens. Marco Rubio, Rand Paul and Ted Cruz, all expressed disappointment in the deal, as well
On Tuesday, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., revealed their budget plan to the world. I would say it was immediately met with complaints, but those complaints started before it was introduced. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. But are there other plans? No. Outside groups called for opposing it before they’d read it, Members of Congress said they’d vote against it before they knew what was in it. I’d like to take these people with me to buy lottery tickets since they seem to have some form of clairvoyance. I get the anger of conservatives, I’m right
Washington- American Airlines kicked off its freshly minted status as the world´s largest carrier Thursday with an aggressive order for $3.9 billion worth of regional jets from Brazil´s Embraer and Canada´s Bombardier. Three days after completing its merger with US Airways, the new American said it had inked deals to buy 30 CJR900 NextGen aircraft from Bombardier, and 60 Embraer E175s. Bombardier said its deal was worth $1.42 billion, while Embraer put a $2.5 billion value on its order. American also has options to buy an additional 40 CJR900s and 90 E175s. American said the 76-seat regional jets ordered will
Her sexy wardrobe (and racy reputation) have earned her the nickname ‘Gucci Helle’ in her native Denmark. It’s the kind of profile you would normally associate with, say, a footballer’s wife, or a model, not a prime minister. But then Danish leader Helle Thorning-Schmidt, 46, who dragged Barack Obama and David Cameron into that embarrassing ‘selfie’, is not a typical head of state, not by British standards anyway. How many premiers, for example, when heckled at a public meeting about their wardrobe would have replied bluntly: ‘We can’t all look like s***.’ Or boarded a military plane to wartorn Libya
New York — The anchor who might beat Bill O’Reilly gets her eyelash extensions applied one at a time, with tweezers and dabs of glue, about 90 minutes before showtime, right after a motorized gun sprays foundation over her face, neck, shoulders, collarbone and sternum, wiping out a galaxy of light freckles that spreads across her — Let me stop you right there. Photos of the day Uruguay legalizes marijuana, Kiev police pull back from protesters, aging U.S. prison population and more. Tuesday´s Photos of the day Would you write this way about a man? About O’Reilly himself? At least that’s what Megyn Kelly might ask at
When I was a kid, I knew two different Santa Clauses. The first had a fat belly, rosy cheeks, a long white beard, and skin as pink as bubble gum. He was omnipresent, visiting my pre-school and the local mall, visible in all of my favorite Christmas specials. Then there was the Santa in my family’s household, in the form of ornaments, cards, and holiday figurines. A near-carbon copy of the first one—big belly, rosy cheeks, long white beard: check, check, check. But his skin was as dark as mine. Seeing two different Santas was bewildering. Eventually I asked my father what
US President Barack Obama may have moved the masses attending Nelson Mandela’s memorial service with his stirring eulogy, but it was his grinning "selfie" with the Danish and British premiers that set social networks abuzz. In a candid moment captured by a photographer, Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt can be seen holding up her smartphone, with Obama lending a helping hand, as they pose for a picture with David Cameron, all three of them smiling broadly in their seats at Soweto’s World Cup stadium.(Snip)Mashable, the news and technology website, ran the photograph under the headline: ‘‘Dear Obama: Funerals are no place
In August 2013 I became very sick with what I thought was a cold. After a few days I lost vision in my left eye and I checked into the hospital. I soon found out that what I thought was a summer cold was actually Strep bacteria poisoning my blood stream. The bacteria blinded my left eye, ate a hole through my heart, caused five strokes on both sides of my brain and forced the removal of my prosthetic left knee. Dr. Lee was the surgeon assigned to perform open heart surgery. What was originally scheduled to last four hours ended
Johannesburg - A man who provided sign language interpretation on stage for Nelson Mandela´s memorial service, attended by scores of heads of state, was a "fake," the national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa said on Tuesday. Asked about the claim by The Associated Press, South Africa´s government said it was preparing a statement. Three sign language experts said the man was not signing in South African or American sign languages. South African sign language covers all of the country´s 11 official languages, according to the federation. It wasn´t immediately clear if the unidentified man was using a
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) snapped at conservative groups that have come out in opposition to the budget deal reached Wednesday between Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). "They´re using the American people for their own purposes. This is ridiculous," Boehner said at a press conference with other members of House Republican leadership on Wednesday. Over the past few days, a number of conservative groups have blasted the deal because it sets discretionary spending levels in the budget higher than previous levels under sequestration. In the past three days, the influential Heritage Action, Club for Growth, Americans
President Obama’s job approval among American voters has dropped to negative territory with just 38 percent voicing their approval versus the 58 who says they disapprove, according to a national poll released Tuesday by the independent Quinnipiac University. That is one percent less than the 39% who said they approved of him in last month’s poll. The majority of the 2,692 registered voters the University in early December said that the president is not honest and trustworthy. When asked, “Do you approve or disapprove of the way Barack Obama is handling his job as President?,” respondents gave Obama lackluster ratings
