| Trenton — Questioned by the state Assembly Transportation Committee over the ill-fated decision to leave locomotives and train cars in rail yards that ended up flooding during Hurricane Sandy, the executive director of NJ Transit said yesterday the agency will not make the same mistake twice. NJ Transit sustained $100 million worth of damage to its rail equipment, including 62 waterlogged locomotives and 261 sopped train cars. NJ Transit Executive Director Jim Weinstein said the decision was based on the agency’s forecasts and history of no floods at the rail yards in Kearny and Hoboken, but after the worst storm

Comments: Top officials left $100 million-plus of its newest equipment in an area the experts said would see serious flooding. Sure enough, the area flooded, and because these are Blue State government officials, they get to keep their jobs, maybe even receive bonuses.

So, this maroon gets his hand slapped and the tax payers bear the brunt of replacing the equipment? Why is he still holding his position? Why wasn´t he fired?
Bunch of incompetent people who never learned lessons from Katrina

Of course, the pinheads on the committee aren´t bright enough to ask the obvious question:
"Mr. Weinstein, where did you obtain your experience and/or education in meteorology to allow yourself to make such a critical decision?"

None of the officials whether in NJ and NY thought of getting advice from folks in the hurricane belt who routinely go through hurricanes, did they?

Uhh, ok, good -- but the problem is that it happened the first time, despite days of warning ahead of the storm and a known history of flooding where the trains were stored.
IMHO, some of these people belong in jail for malfeasance.

So, here are the smarteswt, most educated, higest paid thinkers in the transportation industry and they could not figure out that water flows down hill! They knew Sandy was a huge storem and even out here in Nevada we saw the news days ahead that predicted record high water and flooding! The Dems are letting them escape the so-called "Wood Shed" experience because the same idiots who let this happen promise it won´t happen again? They "learned their lesson."!!! I could have taught them that lesson with a simple phone call and it would not have cost NJ 100 million bucks in flooded locomotives and cars. The NJ tax payers are the ones getting taken to the wood shed!

#6 beat me to it. And in case anyone forgot, Mayor Nagin of New Orleans allowed the fleet of school buses to be flooded, rather than use them to evacuate residents of New Orleans, because he couldn´t find enough drivers with CDL licenses. And to reduce Nagin´s argument to absurdity, imagine a private aircraft being piloted by a man who suffers a heart attack and dies, in the air. And his wife is the only passenger, but is not a licensed pilot. I guess under the Nagin doctrine, the FAA would refuse to instruct her on how to land, because that would be piloting without a license.

Five days of warnings of a superstorm and they leave equipment on the lowest part of the lines. NJ hasn´t paid into their pension funds for years where the workers have never missed a payment. The fatman wants to run on screwing the cops and fireman. aybe he should be concerned with this.

Does the State of NJ "insure" or "self-insure" this equipment? If they self-insure, then what part of "self" does he not understand? I do not want to provide tax dollars from Arizona for their oversights. Insure/pay/replace them YOURSELF, Mr. NJ Transit boss.

Just like Katrina fooled Ray Nagin who had all the school buses parked in a lot below flood level. In both cases the vehicles could have been used to evacuate people. Government employees never learn from mistakes.

Trenton — As Congress debates an overhaul to the federal immigration system, New Jersey lawmakers again took up controversial legislation today that would allow students living in the country illegally to pay in-state tuition at the state’s public colleges. The bill, dubbed the “Tuition Equality Act,” was approved by the state Assembly Budget Committee after a lengthy hearing in Trenton. The crowd in the chamber, which included immigrant students who have been pushing for the change for years, cheered as the committee moved the bill. The legislation will now go to the full Assembly for a vote.

Passengers on NJ Transit’s No. 113 Express bus were taken on a ride from hell during Thursday’s morning rush when a lost driver took a really scenic route to New York, leaving commuters nearly two hours late for work. The express from Dunellen to the Port Authority Bus Terminal became a local—and then some. Passenger Aileen Iosso sent this text to her boss: "I don’t know where I am and I don’t know when I’ll be in." She said she boarded her usual express bus in Cranford around 7 a.m., expecting to arrive at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan

Chicago — Former President Bill Clinton sat down with Gov. Chris Christie today to talk about New Jersey´s recovery from Hurricane Sandy—touching on the state´s emotional connection to the Shore, the need for another source of flood insurance, and the governor´s famous "get the hell off the beach" comment. The interview closed out a three-day conference in Chicago held by the Clinton Global Initiative, the organization Clinton founded. Sandy devastated New Jersey—especially its shoreline—last fall, leaving million without power and seriously damaging hundreds of thousands of homes. In all, New Jersey suffered $39 billion in property damage.

Former Florida governor Jeb Bush (R) argued Wednesday that the United States should pass immigration reform because the U.S. economy needs the labor of young immigrants, and immigrants are “more fertile.” “Immigrants create far more businesses than native-born Americans,” Bush said at the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s Road to the Majority conference. “Immigrants are more fertile, and they love families, and they have more intact families, and they bring a younger population. Immigrants create an engine of economic prosperity.” Bush said immigrants are an advantage that the United States has over China, Europe and Japan, which don’t have the same

Vienna - Wanted: A jester. Wallflowers need not apply. It´s no joke. An Austrian hotel is advertising for a modern-day court fool, who is communicative, extroverted, musical, creative and imaginative. Applicants are asked to bring—and play—their musical instrument during the job interview. Also welcome: creative costumes. The successful candidate will earn 1,400 euros—around $1,900—a month. Hotel director Melanie Franke says those interested should not think they´re on a fool´s errand in applying. She says the idea is to treat guests like royalty, noting that "jesters were a luxury that royal families indulged themselves in."

For the first time, America´s racial and ethnic minorities now make up about half of the under-5 age group and will be a majority by this year or next. That´s according to new census numbers that show a faster shift than expected toward a minority-majority, one where whites will be in the minority by 2043. The new estimates also show that, for the fist time in more than a century, the death rate for white Americans outnumbers the birth rate. Just a year ago, numbers showed that whites had fallen to a minority among babies. Fueled by immigration

It´s brought to you by the letter P — for prison. PBS’s "Sesame Street" is moving from ABCs and counting numbers to offering its young viewers a bigger lesson in life: how to cope when Mommy or Daddy lands behind bars. Called "Little Children, Big Challenges: Incarceration," the program is distributing "tool kits" to schools, community centers and even jails in 10 states — including New York — starting today to help kids ages 3 to 8, organizers said. According to one "tip" for caregivers, "Before you visit your incarcerated loved one, let your child know some of the things she can expect

A group of whistleblowers, including a number of aviation experts, have come forward in a new documentary to claim that the official explanation for the crash of TWA Flight 800 was wrong and a gas tank explosion did not bring down the flight off the coast of Long Island 17 years ago. However, the six whistleblowers, all part of the original investigation team, stopped short of saying the plane was shot down. Flight 800, a Boeing 747, had just taken off from JFK airport with 230 people aboard on July 17, 1996 enroute to Paris when it exploded

An attorney whose firm represents two Benghazi whistleblowers said Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, lied to the Senate when he said there was never a “stand down” order during the Benghazi attack on Sept. 11, 2012. “What was fascinating is that he explained his lie to them,” Joe DiGenova, an attorney representing one of the whistleblowers, told CNSNews.com. “He actually said they were sent to Tripoli. They were needed in Benghazi,” said DiGenova, a former U.S. attorney, now with the Washington firm of DiGenova & Toensing.

Likening religious schools to segregation--a racist system that forced blacks to attend different schools and use different facilities than whites in the American South--President Barack Obama told a town hall meeting for youth in Belfast, Northern Ireland on Monday that there should not be Catholic and Protestant schools because such schools cause division. "Because issues like segregated schools and housing, lack of jobs and opportunity--symbols of history that are a source of pride for some and pain for others--these are not tangential to peace; they’re essential to it,"

Amid a steady rise of backlash, Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old former National Security Agency contractor who was the source of a spring of leaks about the agency´s surveillance methods, conducted a live chat on The Guardian´s website Monday morning. Judging from some of the pointed questions he´s been asked and the reaction to newly leaked revelations over the past few days, it´s clear that much of the sympathy and support Snowden had built up for his early exposures is eroding. Many Americans supported his decision to leak information about a pair of National Security Agency surveillance programs, which, he detailed, gathered information

Listening to Barack Obama give his speech in Belfast on Monday, it was hard not to stifle a yawn. I kept waiting for the part when he would say something interesting, but, about three quarters of the way through, realised it wasn’t going to come. Judging from television pictures some of his young audience felt the same, after the initial rush of euphoria of receiving the rock star president in their midst had passed. This is not surprising, for we had already heard this number about the inspirational role of the Northern Ireland peace process and the Emerald Isle’s

This is the thirtieth anniversary of the publication of How Democracies Perish, an analysis of the spread of world communism by Jean-François Revel, one of freedom´s most serious French defenders since Tocqueville. At the heart of this work, Revel details "The Tools of Communist Expansion," among which the most relevant for understanding our current situation comes in Chapter 16, "Ideological Warfare and Disinformation." The profound simplicity of Revel´s nuts and bolts account of totalitarianism´s Cold War advance, far from being obsolete

Celebrity chef Paula Deen admitted in a recorded deposition to telling racist jokes, using the N-word, and planning a slavery-themed wedding, according to multiple reports. The May 17 deposition where she made the alleged admissions is part of a $1.2 million lawsuit brought by Lisa Jackson, the former manager of a Savannah, Georgia, restaurant run by Deen and her brother Bubba Hiers. Jackson alleges in the suit that Deen used the N-word at the restaurant and that Hiers sexually harassed her. According to the reports, in the deposition, Deen replied “Yes, of course,”
