| The on-going negotiations over avoiding the tax hikes and spending cuts we call the “fiscal cliff” are the simply the latest act in a farce of self-serving political denial. For decades now both parties have overseen and nurtured the expansion of the entitlement state all the while ignoring the slow-motion economic implosion whose predictable end can be seen today in a bankrupt Greece currently surviving on EU handouts. But American voters and politicians are so marinated in expectations of endless federal and state largess that modest reductions in spending, such as those proposed earlier this year

Should the dems return to the original intent of Social Security, this part of the problem would go away. But so would their voters.

Selfish politicians are intent on making us all addicts in their drive for power--with a total disregard for the future.
And a nation of spoiled addicts cares not--so long as they get their fixes--with a total disregard for the future.
So…exactly how does a nation begin to care about it´s future again?
What precedent is there for drug suppliers and addicts to agree to stop their transactions?

I think we should look at the national budget and see what is in it. No one knows. No Congressman has read it. The budget is obscure, with numbers reduced to aggregates, under headings that no one can discern the meaning of. Government employees are not more virtuous than capitalists and are just as given to plush buildings, offices, unneeded cars, equipment, secretaries, paid vacations, early retirements, etc.

The America that built the modern world is gone and is not coming back. Our national identity has been lost and deliberately forgotten. In the future our only leverage in the world will be our consumer spending numbers, not our democracy, military power or national character. Its a tragedy almost too painful to bear, but life goes on. As the Nation falls by the wayside, it is up to each individual to keep the flame alive for future generations.

Are we not at the same point now that Europe was at before the great age of exploration?
For that reason space exploration must be taken out of the hands of government and put to use in allowing us to escape the final death throws of all over mature civilizations to date.
A few daring makers must be empowered to go forth into the new unknown, even though the maps say, as before, "here lie demons." The takers can be left behind to squabble over the remains.

East Germany’s Ministry for State Security, also known as the Stasi, posed a major challenge during my three-year stint as an attache at the U.S. Embassy in Bonn during the 1960s. Detecting and preventing Stasi agents from penetrating the security of U.S. diplomatic facilities in West Germany was a 24-7 undertaking. The East German secret police were even more ruthless and relentless in operations against their own citizens. Political suppression in that communist state was total. There was no room for dissent. Thousands of East Germans were arbitrarily imprisoned for “internal security” reasons.

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Friday urged congressional leaders to raise the debt limit and insisted that the White House is not going to negotiate over the increase because lawmakers have "no choice." "We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate."
