Arizona food assistance grows
Arizona Republic [Phoenix,AZ], by Mary K. Reinhardt

Nearly one in five Arizonans now rely on food stamps, a statistic that — depending on your point of view — proves that either the state’s poverty level is too high or the government program is too generous. The number of Americans who receive food assistance has soared since the recession took hold four years ago. In Arizona, food-stamp enrollment has doubled, to more than 1.1 million people, according to the state Department of Economic Security, which administers the federal program. About half of those who receive food stamps in Arizona are children.

...and again...It is not in the interest of the liberal/left to have a robust, economically independent middle class. The liberal/left get their power by controlling government subsidy and making citizens dependent on them.
Become dependent on government for rent, food or anything else and you will vote for those defending that subsidy until the day you die.

Anchor babies, key to unlocking the welfare wallet; it´s the very foundation of America (America´s doom, that is).

I´m not surprised. There are areas of the state such as Yuma with 30% unemployment. Construction is dead. Wages are dropping and food costs are rising. Add in the ever growing retired population here living on fixed incomes, receiving no interest from savings and spending more on food and energy. This is the Obama-economy.

The Republicans better wake up! Obama and the Democrats are Hell-bent on getting as many people as they can signed up on the government dole as possible. If they succeed in getting the majority of the folks hooked on ´free´ stuff, we may very well see the Party of Lincoln consigned to the ash heap of history!

We will see our country on the ash heap of history, #4. It appears that´s where the majority of our citizens want it to be.

Even Russia has given up communism. It killed me to see Pravda lecturing us about falling into the communist trap in an article I read a couple of weeks ago.

I´ll never figure out how taking more and more from hard-working wealthy people to give to non-productive leeches constitutes "fairness."

Ferry disaster fills
South Korea with shame

For South Korea, a country that pulled itself out of abject poverty to become the world´s 15th-largest economy, the most stinging accusation about last week´s ferry sinking is that it looks like a Third-World disaster. While the captain escaped and the crew dithered and bickered with emergency officials, hundreds of passengers, most of them high school students, obediently remained in their cabins as the ferry rolled and slipped beneath the surface of the cold, gray sea. Mistake piled atop mistake turned a near-shore mishap into the nation´s worst maritime disaster in decades. The calamity has shamed many South Koreans and left

Liberal billionaire Tom Steyer insisted Tuesday that he’s not the left’s version of the Koch brothers.“That is not something I embrace. I think there are real distinctions between the Koch brothers and us,” Steyer said in an interview with POLITICO and The Washington Post taped for C-SPAN’s “Newsmakers,” which will air on Sunday.Steyer, who hopes to use his vast personal fortune to make climate change a top priority in the upcoming midterm elections, said he’s not entering politics for personal gain.Charles and David Koch’s priorities “line up perfectly with their pocketbooks — and that’s not true for us,” Steyer said.

On Pascua Yakui Indian Reservation, Ariz. — Tribal police chief Michael Valenzuela drove through darkened desert streets, turned into a Circle K convenience store and pointed to the spot beyond the reservation line where his officers used to take the non-Indian men who battered Indian women. “We would literally drive them to the end of the reservation and tell them to beat it,” Valenzuela said. “And hope they didn’t come back that night. They almost always did.” About three weeks ago, at 2:45 a.m., the tribal police were called to the reservation home of an Indian woman who was allegedly

More than 600 teachers have walked out of Wake County Schools since the start of the school year. The school district says people are leaving for many reasons. Some for jobs in other states. Others are getting out of the profession entirely. However, many have a common reason -- not enough pay.Thursday´s announcement came as the debate over teacher pay escalates. North Carolina teachers haven´t had a pay increase in five years. They currently rank among the lowest paid in the country. School leaders say they´re seeing a 41 increase in teacher resignations over the same period last year, and teachers

A new lawsuit alleges that “X-Men” director Bryan Singer sexually abused an underage boy at a lurid California sex party. The bombshell suit claims the director of blockbuster hits like “Superman Returns” used his position in Hollywood to exploit young men by taking part in a sex ring. The lawsuit, filed by attorney Jeff Herman, charges that Singer attended parties at a mansion in Encino, California where adult males did drugs and had sex with teenage boys. The teen mentioned in the suit never consented to sexual relations with Singer and often persisted, it states, according to a press release from Herman’s

An 89-year-old Navajo woman wants the land she´s lived on all her life to be left to her family once she dies. But here´s the catch; she lives inside a national park, and age-old conflicts between the family and the National Parks Service may prevent that from happening. Stella Peshlakai Smith, who barely speaks any English, was born in what is now the Wupatki National Monument north of Flagstaff in 1924, a month before the land became part of a national park. Her daughter, Helen Peshlakai Davis, says it´s home to her. "There´s no other place that I want to call

The TCM (Turner Classic Movies) cable channel celebrated its twentieth anniversary yesterday. It did so in grand style, rebroadcasting movies from its first day on the air (Gone With the Wind and It Happened One Night). After GWTW, TCM broadcast an interesting interview with host-for-life Robert Osborne conducted by Alec Baldwin. I have been a high volume consumer of TCF roughly since day one. I am a little vague on Ted Turner’s acquisition of the rights to just about every worthwhile movie ever made, but with TCM, he is putting them to good — even ingenious — use. The films

The Citizens Commission on Benghazi, a self-selected group of former top military officers, CIA insiders and think-tankers, declared Tuesday in Washington that a seven-month review of the deadly 2012 terrorist attack has determined that it could have been prevented – if the U.S. hadn´t been helping to arm al-Qaeda militias throughout Libya a year earlier. ´The United States switched sides in the war on terror with what we did in Libya, knowingly facilitating the provision of weapons to known al-Qaeda militias and figures,´ Clare Lopez, a member of the commission and a former CIA officer, told MailOnline. Public Trust: Sixty-one percent polled say President Obama lies "some of the time" or "most of the time" on matters of national importance. Americans have to ask: Why do we let him get away with it? It´s no surprise that a Fox News poll of 1,012 registered voters last week found immense distrust of a president whose main domestic initiative was based on a lie. The shock is that the same poll found his disapproval level down to its lowest since last fall. Asked, "How often do you think Barack Obama lies to the country on important matters?" 37% replied "most of

The Obama administration is poised to entertain a flood of new clemency applications from thousands of federal prisoners who were given harsh sentences under mandatory-minimum laws following drug convictions, Attorney General Eric Holder said Monday. Holder said in a short videotaped statement that he wants to shrink the federal prison population by a modest amount while ensuring ´that those who have paid their debts have a chance to become productive citizens.´ At the center of the move is a set of old sentencing rules that punished crack-cocaine offenders with more time behind bars than users or traffickers of powder cocaine.

Former Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kan.) said a number of junior GOP senators considering a presidential run in 2016 do not yet have the experience — specifically naming Rand Paul (Ky.), Marco Rubio (Fla.) and Ted Cruz (Texas). The former 1996 GOP presidential candidate sounded particularly skeptical of Cruz in an interview this week with The Wichita Eagle. "A number of the younger members, first-termers like Rand Paul, Rubio and that extreme-right-wing guy, Ted Cruz — all running for president now. I don´t think they´ve got enough experience yet," Dole said. The 90-year-old former senator said, however, his main concern about 2016 is living

If Jeb reaches for the nomination, there will be a titanic battle between the party establishment and the Tea Party. Steve Schmidt, McCain’s strategist in 2008, insists that in the end Republicans usually settle on the most electable candidate. To get by, this Bush may be forced to trim his positions, although the cautionary tale of Romney suggests that he would have to tack artfully and carefully for the sake of the general election. Certainly he will have the resources to outlast, discredit, and disqualify his rivals.

Washington - Michelle Obama said "splurging is the key to life" if you regularly eat right and stay active. Her biggest guilty pleasure: French fries. "How would you appreciate vegetables if you never had chocolate?" she asked. "You couldn´t live without a little chocolate, a little French fries." The first lady took questions from children reporters Monday after appearing at the White House Easter Egg Roll. She told the children that if they eat right the majority of the time, then a splurge or snack is not going to hurt them. "I still splurge when I can, but that's why I try to exercise almost every day," she said.

Fraud runs rampant in Census Bureau

There’s a pattern of falsifying statistics throughout the entire Census Bureau. And anyone who attempts to blow the whistle on the fraud is either retaliated against or ignored, according to two new sources who have experienced the process firsthand. As I’ve been writing for more than six months, the Census Bureau office in Philadelphia uncovered a case of fraud in 2010, did nothing about it and allowed the practice to continue. In that instance, a data collector named Julius Buckmon was faking reports that went into the nation’s all-important jobless tally and consumer-inflation survey. Because the Census Bureau’s surveys are scientific — meaning
