MERCER, Pa. — Authorities say a 7-year-old boy was shot to death when a gun accidentally went off as his father was getting into his truck outside a western Pennsylvania gun store. The boy was shot Saturday morning at Twigs Reloading Den in East Lackawannock Township, 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. Store owner Leonard Mohney says it happened in the parking lot. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that the boy was shot when his father’s handgun went off as the man got into the truck while holding the gun. Police say 44-year-old Joseph V. Loughrey told them

Well actually it sounds as if the gun´s trigger was accidentally pulled in a parking lot. A tragedy no matter what and no CCL holder that I know puts himself in such a reckless position to have that happen to them.

Hard to tell from the paucity of information given, but I would presume that grandpa also didn´t just buy the gun at the gun shop because no gun shop worker that I ever heard of would allow a loaded firearm (chamber or clip) to walk out of his door. Like I said, its hard to tell from the info given, which makes me think that the writer is trying to take quite a bit of poetic license with the story.

Rule #1 in weapons handling - Treat EVERY weapon as if it is loaded, even if you have just cleared the mag and chamber.

And somewhere today a small child on a bicycle was run over by a car.

Neither cars or bicycles will be held accountable.

This story, however, will be milked for all the gun control propaganda it is worth.

No one was harmed more than his son. No one could be more punished than his father. Leave them alone.

Disagree that he has received enough punishment because his child died. He needs to go to jail if found guilty after the judicial process. If he pleads not guilty he should be ashamed.

Prayers for the family and especially the father.

The AP was almost honest, which is as close as they ever are on these stories. There might have been a gun shop near the parking lot, but that´s not the impression the AP wanted. The AP could have simply reported the truth, but that´s too much to expect from those jerks.

A very misleading and disingenuous headline.
I wonder how many 100´s of newspapers across this great land will run this headline such that the empty headed masses of buffoons in this country will jump back in gasping shock asking, "how could a father do this to his son?"?

Reply 9 - Posted by: kono, 12/8/2012 6:13:15 PM     (No. 9055704)

I guess AP also stands for Antigun Propaganda. This headline is misleading in a calculated way, and it´s being propagated, intact, on sfgate, yahoo, and I expect others.

Headline skimmers will all see this headline and imagine somebody emptying a clip into somebody else inside a gun shop. And that´s totally out of whack with what happened.

Just AP being AP, I guess.

I´m with #4. The boy is dead. The father will live in hell for the rest of his life even if the law does not prosecute.

I was taught (and taught my kids) that for someone to be shot by accident, ALL the safety rules have to have been violated. A gun had a round chambered. It was pointed in an unsafe direction. A hammer was already cocked or a trigger pulled, and so on. If even one rule had been followed, nobody would have been killed.
I never carry an automatic with one in the chamber no matter how safe people assure me it is. My normal carry gun is a snub nosed .357 hammerless revolver. Safety is why I opted for the revolver over a small .45.

Colonel Jeff Cooper´s Rules for Firearm Safety --

Rule One: All guns are always loaded.
Rule Two: Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
Rule Three: Keep your finger off the trigger until the sights are on the target.
Rule Four: Be sure of your target and what is behind it.

You can break any two...

I cannot imagine the heartache of the Father in this situation. Condolenses to the family.

I would like to know what handgun was involved in this accident. I think that some handguns are more prone to accidents that others. All guns are dangerous. All guns are loaded. Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, ALWAYS.

The First Lady Michelle Obama told graduates from Nashville´s Martin Luther King Jr High School to carve their own path, work hard and show grit and determination at her commencement speech today. But little did she know that teachers and students at the Tennessee school, have shown more grit than most in dealing with the school´s run-down conditions. The school was honored to host Mrs Obama in the only high school graduation speech she will give this year. But it was no surprise the event was held off campus given the state of the school buildings

You may be forgiven if you missed it during last week’s tsunami of scandals, but President Obama finally let slip that he is a socialist. Buried in the 17th paragraph of one of those mewling New York Times pieces on the woes of Obama — can we start calling him Woe-bama yet? — appeared these two words: “going Bulworth.” Obama himself, the Times explained, has been “longingly” telling his inner circle that what he’d really like to do is what Sen. Jay Bulworth, played by Warren Beatty in his 1998 movie “Bulworth,” did: to go public as

Appearing on Sunday morning on ABC News’ This Week, White House Senior Adviser Dan Pfeiffer told a credulous George Stephanopoulos that the IRS’ targeting of conservative groups was “inexcusable,” and that the law with regard to the activity was “irrelevant.” “I can’t speak to the law here,” he said. “The law is irrelevant. The activity was outrageous and inexcusable, and it was stopped and it needs to be fixed so we ensure it never happens again.” When asked for clarification, Pfeiffer expounded: “What I mean is, whether it’s legal or illegal is not important to the fact

Appearing on CBS’ Face the Nation, White House senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer said that it was “largely irrelevant” who edited the talking points the Obama administration trotted out in the aftermath of the terrorist attack in Benghazi on September 11, 2012. Host Bob Schieffer asked, “That was just a PR plan, to send out somebody who didn’t know anything about what had happened. Why did you do that? Why didn’t the Secretary of State come and tell us what they knew, and if they knew nothing, say ‘We don’t know yet?’ …. Why are you here today?

On Fox News Sunday this morning, White House spokesman Dan Pfeiffer was asked by Chris Wallace where in the White House President Obama was during the September 11, 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi that killed four Americans. “Question,” asked Wallace. “What did the President do the rest of that night to pursue Benghazi?” Pfeiffer answered, “Look, the President was kept up to date on this as it was happening the entire night, from the moment it started until the very end …. I recognize that there’s a series of conspiracy theories Republicans have been spinning about it

The Homeland Security Department has granted legal status to 99.2 percent of all illegal immigrants who have applied under President Obama’s new non-deportation policy for young adults, according to the latest numbers released Friday. That’s a slight drop from the 99.5 percent approval rate reported last month. The policy, known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, grants legal status to most illegal immigrants under the age of 31 who came to the U.S. before age 16 — usually brought by their parents. They are allowed to remain in the U.S. without fear of deportation, and are given work

What did President Obama do on the evening of 9/11/12 when our men were under attack in Benghazi? The invaluable Andrew McCarthy reminds us that Obama and Secretary Clinton had a 10:00 p.m. phone call of which many (including, I think, Chris Wallace) have lost sight. This morning when Wallace asked Obama aide Dan Pfeiffer what Obama was up to that evening, Pfeiffer declared the line of inquiry “offensive.” Translation: Obama and his minions would prefer to “move on” and are warning the likes of FNC off:(Snip for video)The Weekly Standard’s Daniel Halper has posted the rush transcript

It began in earnest last Friday. A flash mob of latte drinking, tofu eating media that has done its best to quell, rather than fan the flames of truth, turned on one of their own. Jay Carney lay bludgeoned at the base of the podium, a victim of friendly fire. Ironically, the attack was reminiscent of the one in Benghazi he has repeatedly denied the Administration he represents bears any responsibility for. “Changed twelve times?!” came the cries. And with good reason. We were misled; no, lied to.

In the wake of one of the worst abuses of government power in recent history, many are rushing to frame the Internal Revenue Service scandal as simply an attack on conservative activists. That view risks creating a partisan political football and misses a fundamentally scarier abuse that exceeds the scandals of Watergate or any other prior government abuse. The IRS has admitted that since May 2010 it targeted grassroots-conservative organizations that had applied for tax-exempt status, unfairly subjecting them to rigorous scrutiny due to their political leanings. Such groups were told they were required to comply with IRS requests,

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Friday urged congressional leaders to raise the debt limit and insisted that the White House is not going to negotiate over the increase because lawmakers have "no choice." "We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate." Lew said that while President Obama is willing to discuss plans to reduce the nation´s deficit with Congress, those talks must be kept separate from any effort to raise the nation´s debt cap.
