MERCER, Pa. — Authorities say a 7-year-old boy was shot to death when a gun accidentally went off as his father was getting into his truck outside a western Pennsylvania gun store. The boy was shot Saturday morning at Twigs Reloading Den in East Lackawannock Township, 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. Store owner Leonard Mohney says it happened in the parking lot. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that the boy was shot when his father’s handgun went off as the man got into the truck while holding the gun. Police say 44-year-old Joseph V. Loughrey told them

Well actually it sounds as if the gun´s trigger was accidentally pulled in a parking lot. A tragedy no matter what and no CCL holder that I know puts himself in such a reckless position to have that happen to them.

Hard to tell from the paucity of information given, but I would presume that grandpa also didn´t just buy the gun at the gun shop because no gun shop worker that I ever heard of would allow a loaded firearm (chamber or clip) to walk out of his door. Like I said, its hard to tell from the info given, which makes me think that the writer is trying to take quite a bit of poetic license with the story.

Rule #1 in weapons handling - Treat EVERY weapon as if it is loaded, even if you have just cleared the mag and chamber.

And somewhere today a small child on a bicycle was run over by a car.

Neither cars or bicycles will be held accountable.

This story, however, will be milked for all the gun control propaganda it is worth.

No one was harmed more than his son. No one could be more punished than his father. Leave them alone.

The AP was almost honest, which is as close as they ever are on these stories. There might have been a gun shop near the parking lot, but that´s not the impression the AP wanted. The AP could have simply reported the truth, but that´s too much to expect from those jerks.

A very misleading and disingenuous headline.
I wonder how many 100´s of newspapers across this great land will run this headline such that the empty headed masses of buffoons in this country will jump back in gasping shock asking, "how could a father do this to his son?"?

I guess AP also stands for Antigun Propaganda. This headline is misleading in a calculated way, and it´s being propagated, intact, on sfgate, yahoo, and I expect others.

Headline skimmers will all see this headline and imagine somebody emptying a clip into somebody else inside a gun shop. And that´s totally out of whack with what happened.

Just AP being AP, I guess.

I´m with #4. The boy is dead. The father will live in hell for the rest of his life even if the law does not prosecute.

I was taught (and taught my kids) that for someone to be shot by accident, ALL the safety rules have to have been violated. A gun had a round chambered. It was pointed in an unsafe direction. A hammer was already cocked or a trigger pulled, and so on. If even one rule had been followed, nobody would have been killed.
I never carry an automatic with one in the chamber no matter how safe people assure me it is. My normal carry gun is a snub nosed .357 hammerless revolver. Safety is why I opted for the revolver over a small .45.

Colonel Jeff Cooper´s Rules for Firearm Safety --

Rule One: All guns are always loaded.
Rule Two: Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
Rule Three: Keep your finger off the trigger until the sights are on the target.
Rule Four: Be sure of your target and what is behind it.

You can break any two...

I cannot imagine the heartache of the Father in this situation. Condolenses to the family.

I would like to know what handgun was involved in this accident. I think that some handguns are more prone to accidents that others. All guns are dangerous. All guns are loaded. Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, ALWAYS.

U.S. Border Control agents detained 147 people suspected of being in the country illegally from a stash house Thursday afternoon in Alton — shortly after 81 people were found hiding in makeshift huts in McAllen. The 147 people were discovered in a house at the 8900 block of North Bentsen Palm Drive. Border Patrol spokesman Danny Tirado said he didn’t recall the exact time of the bust, but said it was not too long after the 81 people were found in a brushy area of McAllen northwest of Sprague and North 10th Street about 1 p.m. The 147 people detained

Reports are flying across the Internet about the possibility that Apple’s satellite map app just snapped a pic of the elusive “Loch Ness monster.” Long speculated to be a relative of the dinosaur-era plesiosaur, many have chalked the rumors up to baseless monster talk. Until now. (Photograph) Could this satellite imagery hold a clue that scientists on the hunt have been missing? Could the Loch Ness monster be real?

Bunkersville, Nevada — Cliven Bundy’s ranch, recently the site of a tense stand-off that started over two weeks ago between the federal government and the Bundy family, had morphed into a good old-fashioned family picnic complete with live country music, hamburgers, and hotdogs Friday. A week after the Bureau of Land Management’s armed force left Bunkersville, Bundy and his supporters continue to make the family’s case relating to Bundy’s right to graze his cattle on public land his family has been on for many years. Bundy told Breitbart News the only communication he has received from the BLM recently has been

The president´s speeches may need to be accompanied by a laugh track from now on, considering the crickets he received at his appearance in Community College of Allegheny County, in Oakdale, Pa., on Wednesday. Although he tried to tout his new spending program, both Obama´s talking points and attempts at humor didn´t go over so well: At the end, when the president walked back from the podium to smile and wave at the roughly 60 people in the bleachers 20 feet behind him, he faced a unfriendly wall of faces. The White House video of the bleacher’s front rank shows three men with their hands crossed, one with his hands stuck

Two Democratic Party candidates in the primary race for California´s 33rd congressional district in West Los Angeles have accused local party officials of using an arbitrary fundraising minimum to favor established insiders--then raising that minimum at the last moment to exclude them from a recent candidates´ forum. Democrats Kristie Holmes and Barbara Mulvaney issued a joint press release earlier this week, accusing the Pacific Palisades Democratic Club (PPDC) of "uninviting" them from a forum on Sunday, April 13 "after first zealously pursuing them." Only candidates who participated were eligible for the club´s

WASHINGTON--Rushing to an afternoon vote last month, Sen. Ted Cruz hopped the underground tram to the U.S. Capitol from his office across the street. The Texan planted his black ostrich cowboy boots in the middle of the small subway car without getting so much as a nod from the other senators--Republican or Democrat--amiably chatting or huddled in their seats. Mr. Cruz finds himself standing alone a lot these days. His response to the cold shoulders: "The establishment despised Ronald Reagan" before he became president, "but the people loved him." For the 43-year-old Republican, the Reagan name illuminates his political life´s

After presenting at the Academy Awards this year, Kim Novak didn’t want to leave her house. The Hitchcock screen siren, 81, was too humiliated to venture from her home near the Rogue River in Oregon. President Obama addressed the White House press corps today, announcing that with the final numbers in, Obamacare´s exchanges have attracted eight million sign-ups -- 35 percent of whom are "under the age of 35," he said. Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. As recently as last month, the share of "young invincibles" signing up for plans was struggling in the 25 percent range, far short of the actuarial target of nearly 40 percent. A leap into the mid-30´s, while still shy of the goal, would constitute a major step, and would bode well for the risk pools'

It’s the stuff of Westerns: a showdown on the desert plains, the big bad government against an underdog farmer. Though the story has only grabbed national headlines in the past several days, rancher Cliven Bundy has illegally grazed cattle on the Nevada land surrounding his farm for over 20 years. He hasn’t paid grazing fees since 1993, and refuses to renew the necessary grazing permit.(Snip)Rather than using the avenues and pathways presented to him, Bundy has staunchly declared his own law and allegiances. Unfortunately, reality doesn’t work this way. If only it did—we could rebel for paying stupid taxes, refuse to

Lee´s "dishonorable side." According to the Roanoke Times, "seven multiracial students, calling themselves ´The Committee,´" have also demanded the school "acknowledge and apologize for participating in chattel slavery." They want recognition of "Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the undergraduate campus" and an end to "neo-Confederates" marching across campus "to the Lee Chapel on Lee-Jackson Day." The students say they will "engage in civil disobedience" if their demands are not met by September 1st. They added: "The

The White House is going to war with another fox — and this time, it’s personal. The Wall Street Journal reports that a red fox has been causing chaos around the White House, tripping security alarms, digging up Michelle’s garden and distracting the president from his duties. The Secret Service won’t give any details about how often the fox trips the White House’s obviously sophisticated security alarms, but rest assured, officials say, they’re watching. President Obama was apparently “stunned” to see the fox roaming freely down the oft-photographed White House colonnade, home to the world’s shortest, but most dramatic, outdoor strolls. GREENSBORO, Ga. — Golf holes the size of pizzas. Soccer balls on the back nine. A mulligan on every hole. These are some of the measures — some would say gimmicks — that golf courses across the country have experimented with to stop people from quitting the game. Golf has always reveled in its standards and rich tradition. But increasingly a victim of its own image and hidebound ways, golf has lost five million players in the last decade, according to the National Golf Foundation, with 20 percent of the existing 25 million golfers apt to quit in the next few years. People under 35 have especially spurned the game, saying it takes too
