Trenton — Some New Jersey residents whose homes were damaged in Superstorm Sandy can now get grants of up to $10,000 for quick repairs under a pilot program announced Friday. Under the Federal Emergency Management Agency´s Sheltering and Temporary Essential Power program, repairs to make homes inhabitable will be covered. Residents of Atlantic, Cape May, Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean counties can apply for the grants through their town governments for money to pay for repairs to electrical meters and electrical, heat and hot-water systems. Work on exteriors is also eligible if it

Comments:
Need a new water heater? Electrical upgrades? A new furnace? Of course you do.

And this is your lucky day, because Uncle Sugar and his pal FEMA are here to flip the bill. Run a hose in the basement and get some "water damage"; it´s not as if they´ll take a close look, as an insurance adjuster would.

Lucky day for insurance companies too; generous taxpayers take them off the hook for payouts they should be making.

Sales of New US Homes
Plunge 14.5 Percent in March

The number of Americans buying new homes plummeted in March to the slowest pace in eight months, a sign that real estate´s spring buying season is off to a weak start. The Commerce Department said Wednesday that sales of new homes declined 14.5 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 384,000. That was the second straight monthly decline and the lowest rate since July 2013. Sales plunged in the Midwest, South and West in March. But they rebounded in the Northeast, where snowstorms in previous months curtailed purchases. New-home sales have declined 13.3 percent over the past

Nearly 40 children have been found with guns on school premises over the last three years, a shocking new national survey has disclosed. Figures obtained from police forces across Britain showed guns and air weapons had been confiscated on 37 occasions by officers - including two hand guns. The other guns included 27 ball bearing guns and seven other air weapons. The figures showed almost 1,000 pupils in total were caught by police with weapons in schools including a Taser stun gun, a meat cleaver, three axes and a cut-throat razor. The total is likely to be only the tip

Trenton - Three people were shot today when gunfire erupted at a funeral at the Galilee Baptist Church in Trenton for a 19-year-old man killed in a shooting earlier this month. Two men are in stable condition at Capital Health Regional Medical Center after being taken by ambulance from the church and a woman, who was driven to the hospital, is being treated for a graze wound, said Trenton Police Director Ralph Rivera. One man is in custody and five guns have been seized after police stopped a car fleeing the church, Rivera said. The name of the man taken

4 Alabama counties have more active,

Montgomery, Alabama — Less than three months before the June primary, four Alabama counties had more voters on their rolls than what the Census Bureau says is their voting age population. Officials give a number of reasons for that, including under-counting by the census. Secretary of State Jim Bennett said the discrepancies create opportunity for voting fraud. “Every duplicate name and every bad address is just an opportunity for crooks to attempt to manipulate our elections,” Bennett said. Each county has a three-person board of registrars that is responsible for maintaining the voting lists with help from the secretary of

New York City — A belligerent bus rider who was caught on camera attacking a pair of senior citizens received a taste of street justice from fellow riders, who took him down and tossed him onto a sidewalk. The nearly 2-minute video starts with a straphanger verbally assaulting a woman sitting down in the bus’ priority seating. He goes on an expletive laden, sexually derogatory tirade, gradually moving closer toward the victim. Soon after, a rider with a cane stands up to defend the woman and the attacker pounces, knocking the man’s cane from his hand. That’s when several riders sprang

With the bells of Notre Dame heralding a glorious Easter Sunday morning, a tourist uses a cash point a short stroll from the ancient Paris cathedral. Within seconds he is surrounded by an aggressive gang of Roma sneak thieves, who make no secret of what they want from him. Feeling hands on his back and arms, the middle age man turns around in horror to see the utterly fearless gang casually trying to help themselves to his money. Such scenes have become so common in the French capital that police last week called for the ´systematic eviction´ of Roma.

The Citizens Commission on Benghazi, a self-selected group of former top military officers, CIA insiders and think-tankers, declared Tuesday in Washington that a seven-month review of the deadly 2012 terrorist attack has determined that it could have been prevented – if the U.S. hadn´t been helping to arm al-Qaeda militias throughout Libya a year earlier. ´The United States switched sides in the war on terror with what we did in Libya, knowingly facilitating the provision of weapons to known al-Qaeda militias and figures,´ Clare Lopez, a member of the commission and a former CIA officer, told MailOnline. Public Trust: Sixty-one percent polled say President Obama lies "some of the time" or "most of the time" on matters of national importance. Americans have to ask: Why do we let him get away with it? It´s no surprise that a Fox News poll of 1,012 registered voters last week found immense distrust of a president whose main domestic initiative was based on a lie. The shock is that the same poll found his disapproval level down to its lowest since last fall. Asked, "How often do you think Barack Obama lies to the country on important matters?" 37% replied "most of

The Obama administration is poised to entertain a flood of new clemency applications from thousands of federal prisoners who were given harsh sentences under mandatory-minimum laws following drug convictions, Attorney General Eric Holder said Monday. Holder said in a short videotaped statement that he wants to shrink the federal prison population by a modest amount while ensuring ´that those who have paid their debts have a chance to become productive citizens.´ At the center of the move is a set of old sentencing rules that punished crack-cocaine offenders with more time behind bars than users or traffickers of powder cocaine.

Former Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kan.) said a number of junior GOP senators considering a presidential run in 2016 do not yet have the experience — specifically naming Rand Paul (Ky.), Marco Rubio (Fla.) and Ted Cruz (Texas). The former 1996 GOP presidential candidate sounded particularly skeptical of Cruz in an interview this week with The Wichita Eagle. "A number of the younger members, first-termers like Rand Paul, Rubio and that extreme-right-wing guy, Ted Cruz — all running for president now. I don´t think they´ve got enough experience yet," Dole said. The 90-year-old former senator said, however, his main concern about 2016 is living

If Jeb reaches for the nomination, there will be a titanic battle between the party establishment and the Tea Party. Steve Schmidt, McCain’s strategist in 2008, insists that in the end Republicans usually settle on the most electable candidate. To get by, this Bush may be forced to trim his positions, although the cautionary tale of Romney suggests that he would have to tack artfully and carefully for the sake of the general election. Certainly he will have the resources to outlast, discredit, and disqualify his rivals.

Washington - Michelle Obama said "splurging is the key to life" if you regularly eat right and stay active. Her biggest guilty pleasure: French fries. "How would you appreciate vegetables if you never had chocolate?" she asked. "You couldn´t live without a little chocolate, a little French fries." The first lady took questions from children reporters Monday after appearing at the White House Easter Egg Roll. She told the children that if they eat right the majority of the time, then a splurge or snack is not going to hurt them. "I still splurge when I can, but that's why I try to exercise almost every day," she said.

There’s a pattern of falsifying statistics throughout the entire Census Bureau. And anyone who attempts to blow the whistle on the fraud is either retaliated against or ignored, according to two new sources who have experienced the process firsthand. As I’ve been writing for more than six months, the Census Bureau office in Philadelphia uncovered a case of fraud in 2010, did nothing about it and allowed the practice to continue. In that instance, a data collector named Julius Buckmon was faking reports that went into the nation’s all-important jobless tally and consumer-inflation survey. Because the Census Bureau’s surveys are scientific — meaning
