| American health care consumers aren’t the only ones who will be hit by slated Obamacare tax hikes. Medical bills for their pets may go up as well. According to a rule published Friday by the Internal Revenue Service, some medical devices used in veterinary practices will be hit by Obamacare’s 2.3 percent device tax. Many of their manufacturers are expected to hike prices, meaning higher veterinary costs for the nation’s pet owners. The tax will not hit devices that are used exclusively for veterinary purposes. But a host of such devices are manufactured for use in both

Comments: When I think I can´t get more riled up over the injustice of 0bamacare I read this. The overreach of this government is just outrageous and horrifying. It is just inescapable.

Sigh. It just never ends.
I´d be interested to know what kind of up-tick rescue workers and other involved animal workers have noticed in homeless pets ... not to mention pets not receiving the vet. care they need or being put down despite having treatable conditions -- owners just can´t afford the necessary treatment.
There are a lot of sad animal stories out there.

I had our youngest Boxer to the vet on Thursday and was told then that 0buzzardCare is going to hike the cost of vet care, as well as cause a shortage of medicine. A lot of medicines used for humans are also used for canines. I suppose the same is true for felines?
My vet told me that they just don´t know yet what the full impact of it will be.

As broad as the definition of "medical devices" (come on-exam gloves?) is, it´s not just pet veterinary that will be affected. Think the entire livestock industry. That´s your food, you carnivores.

This will sure smack some liberals who backed obamacare.
you have to pass it to know what´s in it.

What´s the big deal ?
They´re fine.

We were told the bill needed to be passed in order to find out what was in it. Well, well, well, we´re finding out, aren´t we? Vet visits are becoming increasingly expensive, even for the yearly exams. We have two dogs; I just spent $470.00 this past week for their yearly check-ups, everything normal. I never would have thought to even ask whether this atrocious bill would affect veterinary care.

Perhaps the fools in the congress can float a bill that DEMANDS that Bo be on the same plane as obama when they are both headed to the same destination. Same for obama´s family. One destination, one plane. That should save some money for the population that obama is so intent on making into slaves to service his grand ambitions.

So, I guess PETA will get their wish and a lot of pets and potential pets will be put down rather than sent to loving homes because people don´t have the money to keep them.
Democrats are the Party of Death. And they actually think that gives them the moral high ground. We live in Bizarro World.

Many, many thanks for this post, OP. Two of our cats need "medical devices" used by humans (syringes, needles, winged infusion sets, IV fluids, etc.) so this is a definite head´s up to stock up--heavily. (If your state doesn´t require prescriptions for these items but your pharmacies do, try thrivingpets.com.) Suggest you ask your vet for an open-ended prescription for regular pet meds--ask pharmacist for the longest sell-by date, stock up, keep in fridge, renew well before you´re out of those meds.
I´ll keep giving our cats the best food I can to keep them in good health as long as I can. The following are my choice for our cats. It would seem dog food from the same manufacturers is probably of the same quality. Chicken and turkey are better protein than other forms, less strain on the kidneys. Phosphorus levels in these foods are some of the lowest. Don´t dismiss them because of price--your pets will eat less, plus their output is lower!
Best I´ve found over the years:
Solid Gold Chicken, Turkey, White fish & Liver (all in the same can) Wysong Chicken Gourmet Authority (sold at Petsmart): Chicken & Rice in Gravy; Flaked Turkey or flaked chicken Organix Organic Turkey & Organic Spinach; Organic Turkey, Brown Rice & Chicken
If you use dry:
Now! Grain Free Turkey with Duck Adult Wysong Nurture with Free Range Pheasant
Petfooddirect.com has these foods at the best online price (except for Authority), and sometimes free shipping is available; Amazon has begun carrying some of them too.
If you´re near a PetSmart, Authority is probably the best price for your budget.
Contact me offline if you need further info.

One thing to think about, #11. According to my vet, turkey is not good for dogs. He says that he treats numerous dogs every year at Thanksgiving because their owners have given them scraps and the turkey causes them to vomit.

Didn´t know that, #14--I´m afraid we´ve been a cat house (ahem!) for about 25 years now. Just when we think about getting a dog another stray or rescue cat turns up.
I wondered why turkey would bother dogs so much and found this at dogtopics.com:
Rich, fatty foods such as turkey skin and dark turkey meat are difficult to digest and can cause vomiting and diarrhea in your dog, and in extreme cases, pancreatitis.
Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas and can be lethal for your dog. Mini Schnauzers are particularly predisposed to pancreatitis.
Eating turkey hasn´t affected our cats but that´s not to say it won´t affect other cats. Maybe cat food makers use white meat, but still it´s something to think about if your cat upchucks and there´s no hairball to point the finger at (although chronic renal failure has clear but often foamy vomit as one of its symptoms).
Meant to remind y´all: take gifts to your vet and the staff for Christmas (home-made cookies are often welcome) with a card saying how much you appreciate them.

President Obama on Thursday nominated Victoria Nuland, a State Department official involved in the editing of the administration´s talking points on Benghazi, to be the next assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs. Nuland, a career foreign service officer who was until recently State´s top spokesperson, had long been expected to be nominated the post to replace Philip Gordon, who Obama picked to serve as Middle East coordinator for the National Security Council. Nuland´s nomination -- which requires Senate confirmation -- could come under scrutiny from Republicans who see her as playing a central role in shaping

America´s 100 million cable and satellite subscribers are forced to pay ever-higher bills for a growing number of channels they do not watch. The American people are being ripped off. Meanwhile, services such as iTunes and Netflix have led a revolution in how consumers purchase and experience music and video entertainment. They have upended entire industries to allow consumers to buy digital content where they want, when they want. Amid all this change, two entrenched interests — the cable television and video programming industries — have teamed up to use federal regulations to stack the deck against consumers.

Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election. Levin said, “I don’t believe for two seconds that Obama wasn’t aware of this.”

President Obama is a little uneasy with the way journalists have been dragged into the Justice Department’s aggressive pursuit of national security leak investigations. In fact, he has ordered Attorney General Eric Holder to conduct a 45-day review of the department’s guidelines on the issue. That bit of news was buried in the middle of the president’s hourlong speech today at National Defense University. “Journalists should not be at legal risk for doing their jobs,” President Obama said. “Our focus must be on those who break the law.” And then the news: “I have raised these issues with

Anthony Weiner’s nascent mayoral campaign is off to a rough start. Weiner made his candidacy for mayor of New York official in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, and since then there’s no indication that the process is going particularly well. The former rising star in the Democratic Party can’t shake the scandal that forced him to resign from Congress, and he may be throwing fuel on the fire. Asked this morning whether there was another shoe to drop in the sextweeting scandal that ousted him, Weiner admitted, Well, yeah.

White House press secretary Jay Carney could only explain his problems on Wednesday by telling reporters, "[T]here are a lot of you, and you´re good at your jobs and you´re smart." As easy as it might be for Carney to lob such insincere praise at former journalistic colleagues, such posterior osculations must be embarrassing for a White House so accustomed to having the press in its back pocket. Carney´s job has become more difficult in the past two weeks. Where his explanations were accepted at face value in the past, he is now met with deep skepticism. Suddenly, the

WASHINGTON – First she refused to testify. Now Lois Lerner, the IRS official at the center of the agency scandal, is refusing to resign, according to a top Republican senator. Sources confirmed to Fox News earlier Thursday that Lerner, the head of the IRS division that oversaw the unit targeting conservative groups, had been placed on administrative leave, with pay. But Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, claimed she was only put in that status after refusing to step down. He said the commissioner was in his right to demand her resignation, and said taxpayers

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose career in public life came to an abrupt end when he sent lewd pictures to a college student on Twitter, jumped back into politics on Wednesday by announcing a bid for mayor of New York City. “Look, I’ve made some big mistakes and I know I’ve let a lot of people down,” the Democrat said in a 2-minute video announcing his bid. “But I’ve also learned some tough lessons. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. She was determined to

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

On “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Barack Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.
